If you actually have something to do, Linux is a huge waste.

Good work Rajeet, a couple more threads like this and your daily shilling quota will be fulfilled

>If you actually have something to do, Linux is a huge waste.

Funny, because if you look at the TOP500 supercomputers, they've come to the exact opposite conclusion: if you actually have something to do, anything OTHER than Linux is a waste. Like, a literal waste of a computer.

If you just use computers to dick around and play games on the other hand...
>>
>>53094348
And then back on desktops, aka the computers every fucking person uses

Congrats on your 1%

Nobody uses Linux in the real world because it's shit, it's only good for niche applications
>>
>>53094348
>supercomputers
pretty sure 99.999999% percent of that is the part where linux costs $0/cpu and everything else costs $something/cpu

>>
>>53094383
Most people really do just use their computers to dick around and play games, if desktop market share is anything to go by.

Still, feels good to be part of the top 1%
>>
>>53094409
The bottom 1% who lives in their mother's basement, because nobody else has the time to spend hours messing with their OS just to get basic features to work
>>
>>53094392
Cost is a factor, but when you're investing a quarter of a billion in a supercomputer the operating system isn't the most expensive part.

The real reasons supercomputers run Linux is because it's already popular with computer scientists, it's higher performance and much more tunable than competing proprietary systems, and it's open source.

>>53094422
If you have trouble making basic features work, maybe IT just isn't the industry for you.
>>
>>53094216
I used it from 11-13 then switched to OS X, at 18 I switched to OpenBSD on my laptops and started using Linux again on a VPS and SBC. Nothing to do with growing out of Linux though, just finding things that suit my preferences. You grow out of things because they're for children and no longer entertain you, not because you prefer something different.
>>
>>53094468
IT?

Hahaha you make me laugh.

Guess how many Linux computers I've worked with in my IT career in 7 years?

2 out of like 2000.

In the real world, almost nobody uses Linux because it's incredibly unreliable.
>>
>>53094509
That's genuinely remarkable, you work in IT and you never work with any servers, corporate firewalls, desktops, routers, or smartphones that run Linux?

I'm a sysadmin at an ISP and I work with predominately Linux-based systems daily.

What do you do?
>>
>>53094551

I do on-site support for many businesses. Guess what all their computers run, Windows & Mac OS. Even their servers are Windows Server and the occasional Mac server.
>>

Ah, so level 1 tech support sort of shit. So you mostly deal with end users? That would explain why you've never had to set up or maintain any real infrastructure.

Your inability to work with real operating systems is probably what's holding your career back. Maybe when you can migrate an AAA database from TACAS+ to FreeRADIUS on Linux you'll be able to get a better job in IT.

Not that anon, but Active Directory is a thing, and has roughly 90% market penetration in medium size or better business.

When another alternative to Active Directory exists again, we can talk. Until such time, spend more time in fortune 500 space. It's a mix of everything.
>>
>>53094636

There is no sort of data available on that and its just an assumption based on medium level businesses(ie curry nigger startups)
>>
>>53094646
I actually do work in Fortune-500 equivalent space in my country. And I'm not saying Windows is irrelevant at all, I'm just saying it's ridiculous to ignore Linux. I'm well aware Windows is used heavily in businesses. But even where we do Windows here though, it's typically deployed virtually on a Xen HA cluster.

Also, I've used OpenLDAP and Samba in ADS mode on Linux as a PDC, it works reasonably well.

Yes Linux is used in plenty of back-end systems.

Let's get back to OP's point - Linux is an awful desktop operating system, only used by kids living in their mother's basement.
>>
>>53094694
>I'm just saying it's ridiculous to ignore Linux
Ahh, I follow now. Mental lag.

> OpenLDAP and Samba in ADS mode on Linux as a PDC

For basic login, yes. For policy management, not really, unfortunately.

Netware used to be a thing, and it was awesome. Before that DEC used to have something, that became SMB.

>>53094677
>There is no sort of data available on that and its just an assumption based on medium level businesses(ie curry nigger startups)

Startups? Really? Actually, most of the data I find shows the oppisote. Between Amazon AWS, and even Azure, most startups run Linux derivatives, simply because that's the cheapest way to deploy their app.

Most people with actual infrastructure to maintain use Active Directory.
>>
>>53094727
Except again I'd beg to differ.

I'm using Linux right now, I've had a pretty successful career and I attribute most of it to the fact I started messing around with Linux as a desktop as an undergrad.

After 12 years of using Linux as a desktop, it seems to me the only things you can't do with it are play (certain) games.

I mean can you actually name me something productive you can do in Windows that you can't do on Linux as a desktop?
>>
>>53094509
topkek

is this dude a fucking retard?
>IT
>Linux Unreliable

I've had a media server for 5 years running debian wheezy and only ever had to configure it once nigga, ONCE

now i'll have to upgrade to stretch in the coming months. But all the IT work i've done has been:

Windows: For a desktop/workstation for data entry or certain programming.

BSD/Linux: Servers, Routers and Firewalls

if you work in IT and have only worked on 2 linux machines, you and everyone you've ever worked with is a literal retard and you aren't getting shit done efficiently.
>>
>>53094759
>it seems to me the only things you can't do with it are play (certain) games.
Powershell, or effectively administer Windows systems*, but I agree that I'm splitting hairs.

* Can likely be done in a VM..
>>

>>
>>53094759
Yeah I'm sure it's helped you work on backend systems, but guess what the business world runs on?

Windows.

Why wouldn't they just use Linux if it was so great?

Because Linux is fucking unreliable as fuck, has horrible support, and awful hardware compatibility.

Really. What sort of data do you have on that other than by made up shills. Also I was'nt saying about startups.I was talking about medium tier businesses that don't count because they are as bad as startups.
Top ones like Google,Amazon and now even MS uses Linux.Infact they are now open sourcing everything so that it would eventually be ported to Linux.
>>
>>53094822
>now even MS uses Linux
For what, to replace Active Directory?
>>
>>53094797
lol no

the reason noone uses linux is because office and a host of other software (cad, etc.) are windows-only, and businesses still like to send word/excel documents to eachother instead of pdfs

oh and exchange/clones I guess

it's got very little to do with hardware compatibility and everything to do with what software is available for it
>>
>>53094383
Most people use their computers to access the web. Which by and large runs on Linux.
>>
>>53094834
No.They realised their server market share is dwindeling and with smartphones, their desktop marketshare too.Now they want to appear as friendly to Linux community so people will start using their Azure with Linux.Just few days before they open sourced their AI's core more than Google ever did.
>>
>>53094348
Linux is viable if you write your own software.
For the vast majority of enterprises, let alone medium and small businesses this isn't the case.
Outside of the ever present LAMP stack the only place I see Linux is in thoroughly obfuscated standalone products like vmware or oracle erp etc

The market share isn't dwindling. It's increasing year over year. The decline in on-prem services such as Exchange mirrors the growth in Office 365.

>>53094898
Where do you see businesses using linux outside of lamp stacks and the rare business totally dependent on home rolled software?
I've just never seen it gee. If you want to "administrate" LAMP stacks until you die Linux is an excellent career path.

Don't pretend it's a victory for linux and not a defeat for IT in general. Enjoy your retards touting iPads and iCloud I guess.
>>
>>53094930
ISPs or MSPs or anyone doing any kind of hosting uses Linux for shit other than just plain LAMP all the time.

Devops (build systems, automated testing, selenium, docker, etc), virtual servers and hypervisors like Xen, networking (firewalls and routers, IDS, caching proxies, core networking like DNS, NTP, TFTP, SNMP, etc), databases, high-availability clusters, file servers, blah blah the list goes on.
