Not OP, but I also tried to download qB on someone's laptop to get them a file, and first the installer refused to close even though it finished, and when I launched qB it bogged down the whole computer for 30 seconds and then crashed. Uninstalled it immediately and I didn't even open a single torrent.
Installed Deluge and it worked smooth as butter.

Nope, in 20 years qB is literally the only program on any OS I've ever seen that do that, and I wasn't about to troubleshoot the issue, I wanted to get this over with as quickly as possible as it is.
The program did technically 'work', it simply stopped responding after every time I clicked on something in the UI, at first I though maybe the laptop was shit but since Deluge worked fine, it means the software is shit.

Deluge, or Transmission if you want something simple on OSX or Linux.

Don't waste your time it's 10 times better than Debuge and it's more tools than transmission, I had this problem once and it was because the tracked didn't allowed the new version of qBittorrent, you have to wait for approval or reinstall a previous version. The only annoyance is deactivating the auto update every times it updates.
If you just want something to download and don't care about anything else, get transmission.
