Guys if I use a VPN my college can't see what I'm looking at right?
>>
correct. make sure you use your VPN's DNS servers
>>
Provided you use proper encryption, using a strong cipher suite and such.

Note that a VPN tunnel is not by definition encrypted. A tunnel without encryption is just encapsulation to a remote location.
>>
>>53066008
Ok. Its just my roommate accused me of something and told the school so I'm gonna a play it safe now.
>>
>>53066016
Then wouodnit be better for.mecto use Tor?
>>
>>53066044
Not necessarily. You can setup a VPN server yourself if confidentiality is what you're going for.

If you don't want certain traffic to point back to you, consider Tor or I2P and such for added anonimity.

From what I understand from your situation (>>53066030) a VPN will work just fine for you.

This is how Tor (in conjunction with, and without HTTPS) works: https://www.eff.org/pages/tor-and-https
>>
>>53066112
What do you understand of my situation?
>>
>>53066044
When hosting your own VPN server, make sure you use a strong cipher, a strong Diffie-Hellman parameter, and optionally a supplemental strong TLS auth key. There are numerous tutorials online how to do this (consider OpenVPN).

Or go for a commercial solution if you don't like to set this up yourself, but make sure you trust your VPN provider.
>>
>>53066155
Seems to me all you care about is the school not finding out about your (presumably nefarious) activities. Be that as it may, all you'd need is an encrypted VPN tunnel from your device at the school network.
>>
>>53066163
How can I "trust " any company?
>>
>>53066202
The school yeah , but more so law enforcement .
>>
>>53066206
>asking questions this basic
If you think what you're doing could actually get you in trouble with your school, stop doing it.
You're going to set up a connection to a VPN, not know you need to point your browser at the right port,
fire up Internet explorer with 5 different toolbars installed, and you are going to get fucked.
>>
Don't do stupid shit and no one will care what you browse to on campus Internet
>>
>>53066270
I know programming , not networking even basics ok? Also I can't doing it I'm not sure if I can stop .
>>
>>53066333
What is it and we will be able to help you take appropriate measures. A vpn might not be enough.
>>
>>53066206
Read up on / skim through their privacy policies and terms of services and make an informed decision.
>>
>>53066407
Just stuff. The consequences are fairly bad, socially and with punishments probably.
>>

Doxing is against the rules, and OP sounds already too shady as it is.
>>
>>53065966
if you have enabled encryption, yes.
>>
>>53066437
I'm assuming CP unless you say otherwise. Wipe all your HDDs. Install linux with full encryption. Never install flash or Java products. Use tor. Dmcrypt us your friend.

Now go wipe your HDDs now. Multiple times.
>>
>>53066030
Jesus dude how big of a faggot is your roommate for reporting you? Where do you go to school?

>>
>>53066554
Then prep a second disk with dm-crypt+LUKS and copy everything over. Then wipe the old disk N times, or soak its platters in acid.
>>
>>53066554
> Now that I think of it the school won't care about some rnadom 18 year old student.

yes they will... just move everything you need backup of to somewhere like dropbox AND External harddrive and then install linux with a encrypted harddrive. If you use Truecrypt you can make a double-encrypted drive. For example if they force you to hand over password you can give the password and they have no way of knowing that you have ANOTHER password for your REAL encrypted drive. I don't know if other encryption software have that, but truecrypt does. Use Tor.
>>
>>53066554
Just break your current HDD and buy a used HDD/SDD. Or enjoy jail... Just deleting it wont remove it. Formatting is not enough either unless you do it like 7-10 times.
>>
>>53066578
No I wont.
>>
>>53066675
>>>53066554
>Just break your current HDD and buy a used HDD/SDD.
Breaking != wiping. If the surface of the platters are still in tact, or even portions thereof, data can still be retrieved.
>Formatting is not enough either unless you do it like 7-10 times.
Formatting != wiping.

/g/ plz

OP if your roomy caught you looking at cp then you are so fucked. You would be better off owning up, if you try cover any of this up (and by the sounds of it you'll never manage it good enough to not get caught) you will be in even bigger shit. Also consider that if you're in a big enough campus than chances are they already packet sniff and know what you've done
>>
>>53065966
guys
browsing /b/ and some porn on school network with zenmate would be safe?
>>

>>
>>53067122

>>
If you've looked at CP and your roommate saw it, you are completely fucked. You might as well turn yourself into the local police station now. You might get 5 years in federal prison as opposed to the 20 you would if you destroyed the evidence.
>>
>>53067677
Sorry, that wording was pretty bad now that I read it a second time.

You might get 5 years in federal prison if you turn yourself in, as opposed to destroying the evidence which would get you more.

>>
>>53067648
You can, however control your actions. And one of those actions is taking suitable precautions. You really should have researched what it takes to be anon. Now you need to cover your ass and learn from past mistakes. Even if your uni cam tell what you viewed, without evidence on your HDD you won't be charged with possession. Destruction of evidence is Possible, but I'd rather have that on my record than CP. Take your pick. Go wipe your HDD and find a good attorney right now.>>53067648
>>
>>53067794
This.
>>
>>53067794
Yup. OP you're going to have to do this.
>>
>>53067648
it does not matter, if you don't get rid of your harddrive and start encrypting your shit you will go to jail. and who has the worst time in jail? Who is lowest on the pecking order?

>>53067529
>OP if your roomy caught you looking at cp then you are so fucked. You would be better off owning up,

No he won't be better off, being outside of jail is generally better than being inside jail for cp.

> (and by the sounds of it you'll never manage it good enough to not get caught)

He don't want to destroy his harddrive so yeah, he is fucked.

> if you try cover any of this up you will be in even bigger shit.

No, he won't there is no evidence if he tries to cover it up. If he can give OP trouble by saying he saw cp, then OP can do exact same to him.

>Also consider that if you're in a big enough campus than chances are they already packet sniff and know what you've done

this might be true, but they might still need the harddrive to make a criminal case out of it.
>>
Why would you care?
>>
>>53067911
>Destruction of evidence is Possible, but I'd rather have that on my record than CP.

They need to prove that he destroyed something. If he buys a used HDD and destroys his old HDD in secret then there is only circumstantial evidence pointing to anything destroyed. And noone will likely find anything on the new HDD hopefully.
>>
>>53067612
GUYS?
>>
>>53068067
Pretty sure they can tell when a new HDD or OS was installed. But without physical possession of images, I don't think a possession charge is suitable.
>>
>>53068117
>Pretty sure they can tell when a new HDD or OS was installed.

"I enjoy distrohopping and try out new linux distros once in a while, is that a crime?", it's pretty normal senpai
>>
>>53068100
They use Google analytics, I wouldn't trust it. Another VPN might be suitable.
>>
>>53068067
they only need to show beyond a reasonable doubt that your actions given your knowledge of the situation would destroy data that might be considered important in the case.

>you're an exec
>someone ratted your business partner out for bribery
>they have emails and recorded phone calls
>police have contacted you, asking you to help with their investigation in the matter
>you decide that your Mid 2014 macbook is slow and recycle it and get a new Mid 2015 macbook instead

it's not all too difficult to get something like that to stick
When people do destroy evidence they do things out of the norm/in a rush/for no apparent reason
>>
>>53066223
Or you could just stop torrenting gay porn
>>
>>53068181
>and you just decided to start "distrohopping" around the same time all of your network traffic switched over to encrypted vpns, all of this mere days after your room mate called us?
>>

>>
>>53065966

Yes but it will automatically get your name put on several lists as a pirate, child pornographer and terrorist.

What exactly are you trying to hide anon?
>>
>>53068293

>>
>>53068442

>>
>>53068192
you mean you wouldn't trust the company that owns zenmate?
as long as they encrypt the connection it will be okay as I don't think the uni would bother getting a court order to get them give info.
If they encrypt the connection and the IT guy that investigate the logs once in a while, finds that there is no apparent pron link it will be okay, no?

>>
>>53067612
Browsing /b/ is fine even without any protection as long as you're not actively searching for illegal stuff...cached images aren't incriminating.
>>
>>53068527
What about porn sites like xvideos or youporn etc?

Also IP leaks caused by WebRTC or Flash are only avaiable to the websites you are browsing, right?
>>
>>53068588
>What about porn sites like xvideos or youporn etc?
Those aren't illegal...what are you worried about? Do you think the university cares that its students watch porn?

Why are you worried about IP leaks if everything you're doing is legal?
>>
>>53068293
>>53068242
>>53068517
You can't put someone in prison based on circumstantial evidence like that. They have to prove that there have been a real crime. they need evidence. Even if they had a video of him destroying the harddisk that would still be only circumstantial. There is no evidence that there was anything on it.

"I did not know that roommate made such accusations"

"Why did you destroy the harddisk"

"I wanted to try linux, but did not want to delete the folders one by one. I wanted a empty harddisk"

"Why did you not format it?"

*looks confused* "I saw on the tv show "Mr. Robot" that they destroyed harddisks when they wanted to start over. It's what linux users do"

People get caught on tor all the he time. Usually because they don't take recommend precautions, aka being a dumbass.
>>
>>53065966
Your college can't if there's sufficiently strong encryption but if the VPN keeps logs you're still fucked mate. If you for some reason do keep it stored on your drive get a file shredder e.g. GNU shred or Eraser and run 10 passes over your porn cache. For future usage, LUKS or veracrypt may be necessary and you may want to make a hidden volume for plausible deniability.

Hate to be a "white knight leejuner", but you should off yourself just because you're a fucking degenerate.

And homosexuality completely fuckes that up.
