Every paid web browser.
Every paid media player.
Every paid text editor.
Every paid archive tool.
Every paid optical media burner/ripper.
Every paid mail server except Exchange, which only survives because of the things it does that aren't strictly MTA territory.
Every paid mail client.
Every paid IRC client.

Basically everything except games, office suites, and niche professional software is dominated by gratis software, which is also often libre.

Office 2000 is a better suite than Libre Office.

Shit... Office 97 is better.
>>
>>53058923
Office 2003 trumps all, it just needs compatibility with the new file formats.
>>
>>53058934

that's actually the version I use. The 2007 format compatibility pack does work with 2000 and Office XP too.

I see no good reason to upgrade past 2003, it's just that good.

How old is this shit? JetBrains provides community editions for several years already.
>>

Why would you bother with a cracked version, when you can use winrar for free as long as you indulge a 1 second pop-up when you start the program?

I mean 7z is free, and does everything winrar does and more.
And yet people still prefer winrar

this

everything most people use is free

there's basically no money in mass consumption software for PCs
>>
>>53058542
This to be honest
Or if they wanna get fancy, they'll take the eclipse source, combine it with gcc, customize it a little, and sell it for $800 as the only official solution for programming their piece of shit microcontroller
>>
>>53061237
That's probably the real reason the media is pushing the "post-PC era" meme so hard. It's still possible to sell a five dollar fart button on iOS and Android.

Why can't free apps replace everything on Android like they did on PCs?
>>
>>53061361
Appstores get a subscription fee from publishers. So freeware is not interesting at all for any publisher unless they rely on ads for income.
>>
>>53061393
You don't have to publish your windows app on microsoft store to deliver it to users.
You don't have to publish your android app on google play to deliver it to users.

What about Ubuntu phones?
>>
>>53061511
Sorry, I don't use GNU/Windows.
>>
>>53061488
Do you really think a majority of smartphone and tablet users install their software manually? Unless it's for installing cracked packages, I don't see why they wouldn't. Apple, Microsoft and Google managed to convince software editors that there is no other way to lure such a broad group of customers. Editors are willing to pay the price, but this kinda exclude any open-source project from this market. Anyway, there are not that many open-source projects for mobile platforms anyway, compared to PC.
>>
>>53057487
you mean IE by netscape

Also VLC unless people still run windows media player
IIS by apache and nginx
every simple editor by notepad++

Android itself uses a lot of permissive OSS licenses. And f-droid has a fairly big repo. But there could be more. Fuck all current mobile OS though. Ubuntu touch could turn out good.

At this point I think Quake 3 has been eclipsed by pretty much every single open source wannabe that came after it. Anyone still playing it or its proprietary derivations is doing so just for nostalgia or autism.

RAMDisk has been completely blown the fuck out by SoftPerfect Ramdisk, which is free for individuals to use, if not corporations.

winamp sucks compared to any number of free alternatives now

VLC really is better than windows media player.

Irfanview is better than whatever the name of the abomination is that windows uses

gparted probably the best partition editor I know.

He means windows media player, not mpc-hc, which is correct, stock windows media player is fucking dogshit and about the only thing VLC can beat. I don't really know if you can consider windows media player paid though since it comes free with OS that you pay for.

Also LibreOffice and Apache Open Office both have better compatibility between different versions of MS Office, than MS Office itself does.
