Where would Windows be today if they never stole Apples OS?
>>
Nonexistent.

I prefer Windows and Android to OSX and iOS, I'm not an Apple shill. But it is true, Bill Gates stole from Jobs.

Where would Apple be today if they never stole Xerox OS?
>>
>>53053110
How did they still Xerox's OS?
>>
>>53053122
Xerox was dumb enough to show Apple their invention
>>
>>53053122
Xerox was the first to do a SHITLOAD of things in computers; having a modern computer without "stealing" from Xerox is impossible. They had the first document editors, one of the first computer mouse's, online videogames, etc.
>>
>>53053183
They paid Xerox for it.
>>
Where would Apple be today if Bill never bought stock when it almost tanked?
>>
>>53053122
Xerox invented the interface and Xerox execs let Apple use it because they were old fucks who didn't know about pcs so Apple was able to create their own OS that was the precursor to the modern interface we use today. Many at the Xerox research facility knew it was a mistake but the execs gave it away without thinking twice. Some say Xerox lost out on one of the biggest financial gold mines of the modern era
>>
>>53053201
Don't forget about the first graphical interface, which Apple copied.
Kinda saddens me everytime that most people nowadays know Xerox only for their printers.
>>
>>53053239
The graphical interface*
>>
>>53053251

Yer, this is why Jobs is a hypocrite for going nuclear at Google with Android. Karma bitch

Gone.

PS: Windows is still a shit though and I neither use it nor recommend using it.

Better off due to a distinct lack of furfags.

>Bill Gates stole from Jobs.
Nope. Both took from Xerox PARC...
>>
>>53053122
Xerox (PARC) pioneered and then sat on a ton of interesting, but commercially unsuccessful research projects for years. The Alto and Star machines were cool, but they were basically expensive niche products without a useful third party software base.

Apple offered them shares in exchange for using Xerox's ideas in a mass market product that put their GUI research to good use. Say what you want, but having a GUI running on $2500 68k hardware with support for Pascal and C was a lot more useful than having to buy 2 or 3 boxes full of custom AMD bitslice that only speaks MESA and Smalltalk and costs $16k a pop.

Bill just knew he could make it work. He saw the need, he knew he needed to ship on as many units as he could, he saw the in, and he had the knowledge of how to put it all together.

Jobs just forced people to do it for him.

Two vastly different strategies and both succeed.
>>
>>53053802
This. They were both thieves that stole from Xerox interns because Xerox didn't realize what it had.

They would have eventually taken the idea from someone else, or even just do what Apple did and steal the idea from Xerox. Apple wasn't the only player in the desktop GUI market, they just carried the most traction.

True Story

The PARC originally created one of the first concepts for a consumer based PC. Both Jobs and Gates were in attendance. Pure coincidence though ...

The Alto was not a consumer system in any sense of the word, nor was it designed to be. It was mainly for research, and Xerox applied the technologies into high-end desktop publishing and other graphical work.

Remember the scene where paul allen offers $50,000 or 75000 for QDOS at the seattle shop? Would /g/ have done the same thing? Would you sell your OS for that amount?
>>
>>53055982
Probably, that was a pretty good chunk of money in the early '80s.
>>
>>53053345
Heheheh. Apple was a shit company barely hanging on till they left the PC market and started making phones. My evidence for this is their $2 flatline value till the iphone came out.
Only real reason apple is relevant at any level is cause cellphone companies can't innovate for shit.
>>
>>53055982
Who the fuck cares about operating systems?
Use that money to hire a battalion of Indians coding the next big facebook flash game. If anything, operating systems are known for their bugs and security risks. But everyone loves games. Games are fun.

The only upside is that Xerox later got a good management and was able to save the core document printing and management business, but it could have been Microsoft, Cisco, and peak HP rolled into one.

The first HP laser printers were based on Canon marking engines, as were Apple's Laserwriters.

Nope yourself.

Apple GUI research was well underway before the PARC visit. They had legitimate pioneers in the field, guys whose college thesis papers were on the topic. The PARC visit was done in large part to convince Jobs.

Once convinced he took over the R&D and it became the Lisa project, named after his daughter. Once he pissed everyone off he ended up sort of on his own and did the Macintosh project. (This was before he was really pushed off on his own with nothing to do and left Apple to form NeXT.)

Some ideas came from PARC, but Apple innovated a lot on their own. Lisa/Mac GUIs were NOT identical to the Star, and the Star was missing some features Mac users later took for granted.

I'm not as familiar with Microsoft's relationship with Xerox (if any). But Microsoft got detailed technical documentation and source code from Apple under an arrangement to produce software for the new Macs. Microsoft clearly "borrowed" a great deal from Apple. As someone who learned programming in the days of the Apple Toolbox and Microsoft Win16/Win32 APIs, there were some uncanny similarities at the API level.

>>53054458
It's actually bullshit though. MS didn't go to IBM, trying to sell them DOS. IBM went to MS to license CP/M, thinking that they owned it. MS sent them to the actual owner, Digital Media, and IBM decided they didn't want to put up with their bullshit, so they went back to MS. Meanwhile MS was ironically working on their own version of Unix, which they attempted to sell IBM on instead of CP/M. IBM told them no, and asked them to develop a CP/M clone. That clone already existed however, and MS purchased it for basically nothing, and re-branded it.

IBM loved the OS, and was impressed with how quickly MS "developed" it. IBM decided to continue doing business with MS, and eventually asked them to co-develop a different OS. What came to be known as OS/2. Legally MS retained the right to publish and distribute their own version of OS/2, which they did, except they named their version Windows NT.

I don't know, Raskin's orignal Macintosh was quite different from its eventual production incarnation, which while definitely being a whole different (and vastly more user-friendly) animal from the Alto and Star, still felt like it drew a lot of inspiration at least from the latter.

Unless you're talking about something else, in which case I'd love to read more about it.
