Do you think internet addiction is a serious problem or is the hype just our generation's version of "TV is the devil."

Are you addicted to the internet? Be honest. No judgment, just curious about your thoughts.
>>
yes, i am addicted to both
also to pic related
cheers
>>
>>53045903
Kill yourself
>>
>>53045903
The internet is so valuable that we can't really demonize it. It certainly can be addictive, but it just boils down to self control on whether it will become a problem or not, similar to television.
>>
Internet porn addiction is a serious problem, as it plays into the fundamentals of how the male sexual brain works, but I'm not sure if plain internet addiction is.
>>
>>53045903
I don't think addicted is the right word.

It's like saying someone is addicted to a tool that results in productive work, capable of improving mankind.

It's not comparable to TV.
It's not comparable to anything really.

I use it for entertainment, work, banking, so on. It's more like an extension of myself.
>>
>>53045903
Internet even at it's worst is more productive than tv due to it's interactive nature. Tv is completely passive.
>>
I completely dropped vidya, but I found I spend most of that previous gaming time shitposting now. I think everyone has at least one main addiction at any one time, it's just the successful people are addicted to something useful.
>>
I would say that the internet isn't addicting as much as "internet addiction" is a symptom of a different problem.
>>
>mfw if i didnt have my computer, i'd just be staring at a wall all day or go to sleep
>no buddies to hang out with(what 25 year old still hangs with buddies like that anyway?)
>no physical books
>apartment is basically empty and revolves entirely around my computer
>no money to travel anywhere exotic
>don't even own a tv

seriously, what the hell would i do?
>>
Probably more addicted to the internet than anything else in my life.

I can easily go without the internet if I go camping or something, but on an average day spend tons of time online.
>>
>>53046044
This.
>>
>>53046085
You could always try to pick up another hobby
Maybe tabletop RPGs. It's not like that is a non-sperglord hobby, excluding the occasional normie trying out D&D
>>
i used to do a lot of cocaine, and i can say that no. the internet is not addictive.
>>
>>53046198
>You could always try to pick up another hobby
I have more hobbies than your average person, but they all involve a computer.

The only thing I can think of is maybe working out, but you only do that maybe 1~2 hours out of a day.

It's sad, but most things that aren't on a computer require a friend to be fun. Normal people probably go to concerts, shows, restaurants, site attractions..Doing that alone is pretty awkward.

I went to an anime con by myself once. Never again.
>>
>>53046146
Kind of what I meant by >>53046077, which I couldn't find the words for.

I always hated it when my parents called me "addicted" to my computer, even though I was completely fine and content being away from it for weeks on end during vacations or whatever.

Most "internet/computer addiction" is more a case of simply liking it better over other things or lacking the drive to try/do anything else.

I'd say more people are addicted to their smartphones than people are addicted to the internet.

>>53046217
But anon, you said that about the cocaine too!
>>
>>53046261
well what i meant was cocaine is actually addictive, but the internet in and of its self, is not.
>>
They're just impressed. For most people nowadays, Internet is an amazing technology, literally opens the doors to the whole world, much more freedom online than IRL, etc etc. You know, what we all discovered years ago with forums and simple HTML sites instead of thinking Facebook invented it.
>>
>>53046261
>I'd say more people are addicted to their smartphones than people are addicted to the internet.

That's because most people who are glued to their smartphones don't have actual computers(desktop/laptop/etc). Why would they? All they need is their social media bullshit and Youtube.

People look at me like I'm crazy for not owning an iphone or whatever the fuck is new these days.
>>
That is A LOT of blow
>>
can you be addicted to reading books as well?
>>
I freely admit I'm addicted to the internet. There's so much entertainment freely available online. If I wasn't a poorfag, then I could travel and buy books and movies.
>>
>>53046284
>the internet in and of its self, is not

The internet easily triggers the brains reward pathway, which is the cornerstone of addiction.
>>
>>53046376
but it doesn't make you feel like you are on top of the world, and that you are invincible, and wake you up, ect, ect
>>
>>53046376
>The internet easily triggers the brains reward pathway, which is the cornerstone of addiction.

so does eating

and having a nice conversation

simply visiting 4chan sure as hell doesn't trigger my reward pathways. hell, sometimes I actually feel some anger.
>>
>>53046034
>serious problem
Masturbation is normal and healthy. Stop buying into catholic stigmatization of sex.
>>
>>53046399
Just because that is not the case for you doesn't mean it isn't the case for anyone else. I'm sure you have heard of cases where people literally died in front of their computer from exhaustion.

http://journal.frontiersin.org/article/10.3389/fnbeh.2014.00288/full

Humans are fundamentally social and visual creatures, two things the internet provides in abundance.
>>
Most people who "addicted to internet" are just "addicted" to social media sites like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
>>
>>53046426
Not to the same extent the internet can. Or are you saying it's impossible to be addicted to something?

>>53046466
masturbating a few times a week =/= looking at porn all day

Many people suffer erectile dysfunction from pornography addiction, since a single women cannot provide the wealth of novelty the internet can. This plays into how the brain fundamentally works.
>>
>>53046034
>Internet porn addiction is a serious problem

I've been masturbating to all kinds of porn since I was 12, nearly every single day. I still do

I have a nice job, a house, a pet, a car, and generally a comfy life.

The only reason I don't have a wife is because my personality sucks(always has) and i'm too invested in my career to consider one anywho. Has nothing to do with how much porn I fap to.
>>
>>53046560
girls are gross anyways
>>
>>53046551
>>Many people suffer erectile dysfunction from pornography addiction
i have this, but it's not like i would get laid, anyway. porn keeps me from becoming a rapist murderer
>>
>>53046560
>my personality sucks

lots of people with shitty personalities have wives

try again
>>
>>53046560
That's nice, but what you have described is not addiction.
>>
>>53046468
>Just because that is not the case for you doesn't mean it isn't the case for anyone else

Obviously by that logic anything is addictive. People die from overeating too. Does that mean food is inherently addictive? No.

'Addiction' should be based on how easy it is for a NORMAL individual to moderate their usage. Someone on meth or heroin has little control over their moderation.
>>
>>53046551
>Many people suffer erectile dysfunction from pornography addiction, since a single women cannot provide the wealth of novelty the internet can.

I knew this feel first-hand some days ago. Not cool. I promptly deleted all my shemale JAV videos.
>>
>>53046603
>lots of people with shitty personalities have wives

Doesn't apply if you look good or are tall.
>>
>>53046642
Or wealthy.
>>
>>53046621
This thread isn't about whether the internet is inherently addictive, it's about internet addiction.
>>
yeh I think its a legit addiction,
Whenever I go on this computer, I try and be productive. Such as learning german, or learning to code. when I try to be productive I end up on 4chan or other chans. Or Ill just end up doing something else unrelated. I end up missing sleep and on several occasions I spent the entire weekend with no sleep sitting on the computer. I am clinnically depressed and get anxiety when away from the computer for say a bit longer than 8 hours. You may be picturing some fat man sitting in front of a dimly lit screen but I forget to eat on a daly basis so instead Im verging anorexic and no muscles. I think this all started around 15 when I got my first pc. Really sad honestly. I need help but I dont know how.
>>
>>53046252
>concerts
no

>when I try to be productive I end up on 4chan or other chans. Or Ill just end up doing something else unrelated
ADHD

How do you manage to do well in uni, considering most allow you to use laptops? Do you also visit 4chan or other chans during lectures?
>>
Not an adiction just a way of life about 10h day
>>
>>53046718
I doubt that anon goes to uni, they sound NEET.
>>
>>53046718
I use my phone for 4chan at school because its blocked on the unis wifi. I am failing all of my classes currently actually so I guess Ill have to do with the neet life. I think all of the professors have just given up on me. They dont do anything about it.
>>
>>53046661
Or have arranged marriages.
Or has an interesting skill
Or has something in common
Or finds a girl that hates good personalities

The list goes on.
>>
>>53046798
>Or have arranged marriages
i live in a first world country

>Or has an interesting skill
that's not enough

>Or has something in common

lol what
>>
>>53046843
>i live in a first world country
Great, just import one from a third world country like Russia then.
>>
>>53046354
Have you even read Don Quixote?
>>
>>53046760
What should they be doing? You should do something if failing bothers you. Most professors will probably help if you actually ask them for help too.
>>
>>53046843
>i live in a first world country

you are already the perfect man for like 90% of the world's population
>>
>>53046466
way to miss the point, retard
>>
>>53045903
>that pic

looks like a good time

hot chick and lots of blow, i don't see the problem here
>>
I think it can be an addiction but can you really blame people?

never before have you had this much information at once. Its incredible.

I think also; that we as humans in general are shifting in our paradigm of living. I think a lot of the negative aspects of such an information rich society is just growing pains.

I don't think its a suitable *replacement* to real life sometimes.
>real life interactions
>physical books
>outdoors activities

but its a great supplement

I used to never carry a smartphone but i've embraced it. just in a responsible way. Gotta Adapt.
>>
>>53046551
Yeah. I hate its addicting properties. As placebo as it can be, I feel a lot better if I dont do it all the time
>>
>>53046760
Seriously Anon. GO TO A DOCTOR
TELL THEM WHATS HAPPENING

GET HELP BEFORE YOU WASTE YOUR LIFE AWAY
>>
>>53047646
Even if I did, theres seriously at least 1 million other people just like me who will contribute the same in the world as me. honestly what would the point be? sorry for >>>/trash/ drama
>>
>>53045978
same here lol
>>
I dont even know what I would do all day if I didnt have the internet or videogames
what is there even to do, waste a bunch of money "going out" with random people every day, or sit around doing literally nothing watching TV?

Addicted? No.

>Anon, you seem to eat more than one slice of bread every morning, are you bread addicted?
People should stop calling someone who uses more then they do "addicted".
Addicted is a state of mind and/or body that literally forces you to take another line of blow (or anything else).

Ask me to consume less internet and i will say no.
Not because i can't live without, but because your reasoning that i should change my behavior is bullshit.
I sometimes go on +3 day hikes, sometimes even without a tent and i sleep outside, i cook on campfires and stuff.
i have my phone with me, but i never call or text someone or even look if there is wifi in range, just some nice days of airplane mode, me, and nature.
I do take pics sometimes

Seems pretty easy to rack up if you save a lot of stuff.
>>
>>53046044
I used to spend 9+ hours on plebbit and 4chan per day and I would certainly call that internet addiction.

I'm not saying it's the internets fault (just like its not McDonald's fault if your kid is fat), but it's still a problem worth considering.
>>
>>53046252

if your hobby doesn't make your create something

it's not a real hobby, it's money burning machine

get a hobby that teach your how to build, create o design something

examples (not limited to...):

writing
drawing
3D modeling
animation (traditional or 3D)
programming
sculpting
working out (your are the sculptor and the marble at the same time)
electronics
carpentry
etc

tl;dr: if your hobby doesn't teach you to create something, it's a waste of time
>>
>>53047961
The linux kernel was torvalds' hobby (search google for linus torvalds quotes)

>>53048045

people don't like to read most of the time

exactly, it's a productive hobby that turned into something bigger

but begin small, your furry fan art won't be a world changer desu-ne
>>
>>53047961
>puts two newlines after each sentence

>>53048098
Don't do furry fan art, it's suicide-tier.
Pick something you can tell people about without being frowned upon.

yes, i bet you're improving mankind by shitposting on /g/

Very, very true.

Too many people on /g/:
>video games are my hobby
>watching people talk about tech is my hobby
>buying shit for my battlestation is a hobby
>>
>>53045903
>internet addiction
only luddites say this
>>
>>53045903
Yes

Got internet around my home when I were 13
Mom got shit dsl when I were 15

I developed both internet and a porn addiction. Set myself up for a huge lot of failure later in life
