Wayland is coming, Fedora 24 might even have Wayland by default.

How X survived so fucking long is a mystery to me, it's so fucking hilariously shitty at this point.
>>
>>52996347
Because majority of Linux/BSD users doesn't use Linux as desktop OS and they don't give a shit what graphics / wm will be under the hood.

Also I dont understand why I must go to Wayland if Openbox / i3 works great.
>>
Wayland is already working in Fedora 23.
>>
Ubuntu 16.04 will have Mir in testing repository.
>>
>>52996305
>>52996315
yeah i agree that it might become something someday, but at the moment no one uses it and its shit. or not really shit but its missing something. if fedora relly adopts it soon, it will be a big boost. i said that nothing can replace x but im not really an x fanboy or anything, i hope that wayland will become more popular and supported
>>
>>52996347
Because was open source.
If NeWS or DisplayPostscript were open to begin, the world could different.
>>
>>52996401
>Because majority of Linux/BSD users doesn't use Linux as desktop OS and they don't give a shit what graphics / wm will be under the hood.
Then they proceed shit on people who use Windows as a desktop OS. The fact of the matter is that as long as X exists, gnu/linux is not going to be a viable desktop OS.

Kinda interesting considering Valve got on board the Lunix thing and now actual "intensive" games are running on X. You think they'd use their power & resources to help scrap it

Valve almost did nothing in the graphic side of UNIX/Linux.

this pic shows stupidity at it's finest!
2 pcs. = 1 cut = 10 min
3 pcs. = 2 cuts = 20 min

how did the teacher get away with this.
If I saw this, i'd tell him to get another job, or to teach sth. differemr, like art ...
>>
>>52996476
what if she gets slower after the first time she sawed? wouldn't it be sth. like 22.5 min, or even 25 min?
>>
>>52996422
What are you stupid fuckfaces talking about?

It's been a dependency for years now and it essentially complete. Wayland devs are just polishing it to avoid retards like you calling it broken and hailing X as eternal shitlord supreme.

>no drivers except open source
No thanks I need hardware aceleration.
>>
>>52997371
AFAIK it still doesn't play nice with proprietary AMD and Nvidia graphic drivers. For a shitposting machine it works perfectly fine nowadays.
>>
>>52996277
Can we ever go past the >it's old so it's bad meme?
It's like people forgot everything about systemd already
>>
>>52997469
Nor does X, but I guess that depends on your level of "niceness".
>>
>>52997371
It doesn't work nicely with anything that ain't GNOME
And even on GNOME is far from perfect
>>
>>52997371
Applications that aren't targeting X directly rather than some intermediate toolkit need to be rewritten.

Also some people are mad because Wayland ditches X's dumb network transparency features for running GUI applications over the network without remoting in.
>>
>>52997522
I thought GNOME was the only thing it *didn't* have full spport on.
>>
>>52996422
I use Wayland daily on my T420. It's just fine. I would say it's ready for daily use, there's still a few quirks (sometimes windows aren't brought to front when a file is opened if the program is already opened, like gedit).
>>
>>52996277
>we
Get kuk'd fgt
>>
>>52997457
I have the same hardware acceleration with radeon+intel that I have with flgrx+intel on my hybrid graphics laptop
Moreover, radeon+intel allows me to DRI_PRIME=1 and to let the OS _dynamically_ turn on and off the discrete GPU depending on the GPU workload; whereas with fglrx I'd have to reboot to switch between IGD and DIS.
Also, radeon has no "quirks" and it always fit perfectly with any kernel (no kmodding headache)

There's literally no reason to use a proprietary driver unless you use
- novidea (ahahahahaha)
- you need OpenCL (!= OpenGL)(it should be obvious, but hey we are on /g/)

This desu.
I'm recently switched to the amdgpu driver and it is way better then fglrx. Its 4 months old and it already beats the carp outta the proprietary driver.

really? Every time I change to amdgpu my shit gets all fucked up.
>>

Like what?
Are you using it with one of the cards thats actually supported or is it one of the other ones?
Also are you on kernel 4.4+? Dynamic clocking didn't work on early ones.

The good bits of plan9 were taken already and stuffed into Linux.

We are very close to having it replaced, OP, have some fucking patience. Switching over from a major part of a graphical modern desktop takes time and planning.

It's basically ready to go, don't listen to people that are saying it's not. It's what I'm using on my laptop and I have no problems with it at all.

Quirks are mostly cosmetic. The most common internet and dev software already work in Wayland. Unless your work flow relies on some piece of software that you absolutely cannot replace because autism and that doesn't work on Wayland, the bases are covered, the solution is there, and it works.

Just wait few years and realize how far different DEs will be of each other.
It will be about the WM, it's the main thing that decides how things act and behave.
Copy paste from one window to another?
Works in X, but not in Y and so on..

We are going to remove the common ground and define a thin protocol.
It can be a good thing, then on the other hand looking at current DE foss projects, it can fail miserably.
