I'll be honest I really hate iOS, but android tablets are complete shit unless you go with the nexus. And I've even heard that the nexus 9 was the worst nexus tablet.
I wouldn't say to go buy an iPad since they're overpriced as fuck. I just think tablets are meme technology that aren't really necessary.

As far as design, the Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 is the best tablet I have ever used. A little dated internals, but still holds up today with a sweet screen. Might be hard to find nowadays.

Nexus 7 2013 is small and great for web browsing and is easy to hold and use in bed. It is a bit small, but I've seen them new with a case for $130. It has a great fhd screen, great stereo speakers, and good battery life. 7 inches is a bit small for tablet use, but you might like it.
The other tablet I have is a fire hd 8, which is a great tablet for the price.
Honestly the first thing you need to determine is what screen size you want. 7 and 8 inches, especially with a case that has a stand built in, is great to use one handed around the house and in bed.
I used to have a 10.1 tablet, but it was not that comfy.
I bought an Asus transformer and so far it has been great. I feel a bit like a turbo autist for having 3 tablets, but each has its use.

I fell for the Tab S2 meme last month. It's ridiculously thin and light of course, and I love its screen. It's also smoother than butter.
And apparently stable CM is on its way so Samsung's bloat will be irrelevant. For the time being you can root it and remove/disable most of the shit.

Basically Chuwi hi8 is a cheap-ass $80 tablet that dual-boots Windows 10 and Android. You can delete/backup the Android partition if you don't need it and I think that there's a way to run Debian on that with chroot that would use all Android drivers.

Basically the entire transformer line has CM support. The Zenpad isn't even a year old yet so I'm not surprised at the lack of ROM support. Of course the third party ROM community has gone to shit lately.
If you can find a cheap Galaxy Tab S original, you're in luck. That thing is a fucking master piece. Tab S2 looks like its mongoloid brother that should have been aborted.
That or the Sony Xperia Tablet Z4, cheaper option the Z2.
