What do you use RSS for?

Also, discuss the conspiracy to curb RSS because it hasn't been figured out how to put ads in feeds

To find out about new contents on lots of sites - I have a few dozens of feeds subscribed. For retarded sites not supporting RSS I use page2rss.com.

Wtf, seriously. I added that ability to my site in less than an hour, including research and testing.

i don't even care though. i'm tired of convincing retards. as long as rss works for me, normies can do whatever they want.
>>

This holy shit. I'm following so many places be it for animu, technology articles, erotic chinese cartoon porn comics, deals on goods, etc and I still have over 100 tabs open.
>>
>>52990883
>i'm tired of convincing retards. as long as rss works for me, normies can do whatever they want
The problem is retarded normies outnumber us vastly and then one day stuff like RSS may stop being supported because "almost nobody uses it these days".

Kind of reminds me how mailing groups are marginal now since retards prefer to use facebook groups for everything.
>>
Nowdays i mostly use it to get updates on webnovels or translations
>>

RSS, mailing lists, usergroups, Google Wave...

eh. Let's hope something better comes up. Or build it ourselves.

And after all, both RSS and mailing lists (and IRC, while we're at it) are quite alive still.
>>
>>52991472
Google Wave lives on as Apache Wave fyi

>>52991143
As long as tech people still use RSS, it's going to stay around (just like IRC has) until something new or an extension does it overwhelmingly better

It's for people who use a lot of different sites for information who want to incorporate all those diffrent feeds (how most wesbites push out the information to their front page) into one source to read.

Example: Some bloke reads CNN, USAToday, Al-Jezzera and The Drudge report every day. Instead of going to these sites, all the information can be pushed into one feed.

>>

The problem is that the less people use rss, the less it's the adoption in new sites, or even it surviving.
How often features are removed because "not enough people was using them"?
RSS feeds could be the next one.

I use RSS on a daily basis. RSS is awesome.
I use it to follow blogs, project releases on github, album releases on bandcamp, youtube channels, news websites, forum threads and a few other things.
For feeds with a lot of activity I use Flym on my smartphone, for everything else I use newsbeuter on desktop.

> Also, discuss the conspiracy to curb RSS because it hasn't been figured out how to put ads in feeds
This is not true, I know quite a few websites that put ads inside of their feed articles. Besides, a lot of news websites only show article summaries.
>>
>>52996293
to be fair, it wouldn't be an issue if HS didn't upload exclusively to nyaa.
I should set up XDCC though.
>>
>>52996300
>Besides, a lot of news websites only show article summaries.
That is what sucks. Force some few line summary then you HAVE to go to their site and see ads and their shity website layout.

I instantly stop subscribing to their feeds and find some other site because let's face it. There are countless sites that copy content from other sites. There is always one that has a nicely formatted article available through RSS.
>>

I follow bitlocker? type sites such as newalbumreleases and rlsbb so I am kept abreast of whatever I might want to steal. I don't torrent so this is a good way to know if a band I like has a new album coming out, or if a movie I saw is up for download
>>
>>52988989
I only use RSS for torrenting, and never really found any use for it on normal websites.

I don't really go to a lot of website though. I go to /g/ for tech news, in addition to a local site that I simply refresh every now and then.

Any other news or important event I'll get by having lunch with co-workers or browsing 4chan all day.

RSS on Nyaa torrents is amazing for keeping up with current anime though.
>>
I'm still bitter about what LinkedIn did to Pulse Reader.

That app was absolutely perfect until they went on their crusade to turn it into some sort of community thing and even went on to kill the RSS functionality altogether.

An RSS reader that eventually dropped RSS support in favor of social networks and curated regional news channels. God fucking damn it

Wikipedia is a website which tells you what things are, but sometimes it's nice for someone to tell you about what things are, because they understand the context.
>>
>>52998469
Except "RSS is/isn't superior" was never the argument at all you fat fuck. Why don't you just accept the fact that most people only read internet articles and watch videos for shits and giggles and to pass time? To people who aren't you RSS for "news" sites is everything wrong with the facebook feed. The don't want that shit. They don't care about some stupid article they "missed", in fact, they're probably better off without them. Eating a pile of shit and licking the bowl afterwards isn't superior to taking a handful of chips and dipping them in a bowl of shit.

I hope you get my initial point now.

Everything. Got about 350 feeds that I follow. Blogs. Torrent downloads. Webcomics. If a site doesn't have rss/xml, I have a little cron job script (basically, https://thp.io/2008/urlwatch/ hacked to bits) set up on my server to watch for changes to sites that then generates a simple RSS feed for each so I can then check it. Also useful for the sites I build at work so I can make sure they're being updated properly.
Was using feedly, now run my own using http://feedafever.com - bit more control over feeds and they don't clear old posts out after 30 days. Mostly read stuff through http://reederapp.com on my Mac/iOS devices though.
