I've finally decided to upgrade my computer. I'm going to scrap my current Pentium 2 completely and I've decided to go with an I7.

I want performance without spending a fortune. It doesn't need to be the most recent architecture and o wanted a good MOR CPU in that category so I've decided on a 4790k.

I can't for the life of me figure what I should look for in a motherboard.

I've seen some of those Asus vengeance LGA 1150 boards but don't have many PCIe slots. Not sure if I need them anyway?

What would you suggest that isn't basic cheap o but isn't a fortune. If no can get a better board cheaper second hand, I will.

I have an ASUS z97-a board with a 4790k and it works well.

Occasional rendering of video.
Heavy use of AutoCAD (work) and PhotoShop.

Is that /g/s way of saying I'm not a cork sniffer because I have to make a compromise?

It's a simple case of wanting good performance on a tighter budget.
>>
>>52987073
no. >>52987013 is probably just poor. Devil Canyon i7 is a good compromise of great single/multi thread performance for it's price. Not to mention LGA 1150 motherboards are cheap as is ddr3.

Now if you went and bought an i7-5960X and said the same thing, I'd call you an idiot too.

As for motherboard choice, I personally own an Asus Z97-AR. Amazing board for the price. Anything Asus will serve you well. Find a Z series board in your price range and you're gtg.

I've seen a few z97 board on eBay but I we put off but something I glanced over but I can't remember what it was or where I read it. I can't see how they can be bad either way. Ive found Asus to be reliable in the past.

A Z97 full ATX board
no USB 3.1, 3.1 is useless unless you really want to use it 10 years from now
Lots of SATA ports for lots of SSDs and HDDs
LED that displays mobo states, can be handy
Asus and MSI are good, Asrock and gigabyte are iffy
built four computers over the course of a year so far with unlocked Haswell refresh i5s and i7s, no failures with Asus mobos yet
>>
>>52987134
pretty much this in a nutshell. Asus's ROG (gaming) line of motherboard while gimmicky, is usually full feature packed and reliable. Same with their Sabertooth line.
>>
>>52986850
Just get a xeon 1231v3 with h97 chipset mb and save yourself some money

99% the same performance for a substantial cost saving.

how do you get your monitors to output display since you don't have onboard graphics the first time around? a dedicated GPU wouldn't have its drivers available so how to get display?

I want you to do me a nice little test right now.
Use whatever driver cleaning utility you want and then restart your PC.

See how it doesn't give a shit, defaulting to windows basic theme and 800x600?
Yeah.
>>
>>52987305
Yeah with an overclocked i5 versus stock i7's.
Might as well just use the money you'd spend on more expensive cooling to get the faster chip, which can also be overclocked if you want to go that route.

Sorry. I'm not seeing what you are. Stock against the I7 it under performs.

More to the point I'm not one for fiddling with over clocking. I just want the computer to work and perform well. Any reason given for it to fail or cause down time really isn't something I want to give consideration to.
>>
>>52987405
>More to the point I'm not one for fiddling with over clocking.
Then you don't need a fucking K CPU or Z board.
>>
>>52986850
Just buy a 5820k at that price

Or you can look at older server hardware (components can get substantially cheap if you buy then used)
Or what >>52987178 said,
unless you doing some heavy single threaded shit, then ignore the latter 2.
>>
just get an i5 4460 with a gtx 750 ti and play at 1080p60 with antialiasing disabled faggot
>>

You sound really bitter. Do you often get so wound up when really no one else even knows who you are? Let alone presume they would care? What a virgin.
>>
>>52987559

He has a point though, it shows an extreme lack of knowledge of computers, don't get too butthurt about being called out, you are on a technology board

P.S. I didn't understand the differences between motherboards either until about a month ago
>>
>>52987405
No overclock
Get a xeon chip
>>
>>52987598
The main reason for wanting the K processor is that it's easier to find, cheaper.

And just because I'm not interested in over clocking now doesn't mean I won't be at some other point in time.

I get it. It's a tech board and like all others, everyone knows better than anyone else and their two cents is worth more than yours.

What's wrong with the 750ti? It seems like a really nice card for its price and power usage (and its small, and draws power from the slot itself)

It's not high end 4k gaming monster, but its certainly a very nice little card
>>
>>52986850
Get a Z97 motherboard from either Asus or Gigabyte imo. PCI-E slots are for video cards mostly and some other shit (Wireless adapters, some new SSD's) so if you don't need those you're fine with just one.

Everyone will hate on me, but go Skylake. It has way more pcie lanes that will serve you better in the future.
z97 z170
USB Total (USB 3.0) 14(6) 14(10)
Total SATA 6Gb/s 6 6 PCI-E lanes 8x PCI-E 2.0 20x / 3.0

Skylake is not much of a upgrade speed wise 5-10%, but it has way more peripheral support, thats the real upgrade. z97 mobo's always make compromises on the pcie lanes because z97 does not have many.
>>
4690k best choice senpai
>>
>>52989562
X99 also has more PCI lanes and you'll be getting 6 cores for nearly the same price as the 6700K, potentially a 50% speed upgrade in rendering for maybe $50 more.
The 5820k can be safely OC'ed to 4Ghz on 1.2v for 24/7 operation or 4.2Ghz with a slight voltage increase, so you're not losing anything in terms of single-threaded performance.
Moreover, you'd be buying into a platform that has double the RAM capacity and bandwidth, and the potential to get CPUs with as many cores as you could ever wish for, if needed.
Also, all Asus and Asrock motherboards are equipped to handle Xeons and ECC RDIMMs, so you can also turn your system into a workstation down the line as well. It's just a super-flexible platform all-around.
>>
>>52989615
if you only need 8 pcie lanes
>>
>>52989681
yes but x99 turns into housefire mode once you overclock it. That soldered heat spreader you guys jerk off about all the time is a necessary feature because of the heat, not because intel is jewish.

No it isn't, you literal retard.

I7-6700k is still $100 more expensive than i7-4790k (if not more).
>>
>>52989702
Just throw a noctua on it then, it's usually a good a idea to put a stonk cooler on high-end chips anyway, whether it's a 6700K or 5820K. Especially when said chips are going to be used for design work and rendering and you need it to stay cool over extended periods of time.
>>
>>52989727
only because of the shortage.
I was comparing z97 vs z170, not x99

This is bullshit. The GPU ranking goes like this from worst to best:

>HD Graphics (Haswell Celeron and Pentium)
>HD 4400 (Haswell weak i3s)
>HD 510 (Skylake low-tier)
>HD 4600 (Haswell strong CPUs)
>R7 240
>GT 720
>GT 730
>HD 530 (Skylake high-tier)
>R7 (Kaveri/Godavari)
>R7 250
>Iris Pro 6200 (Broadwell)
>GT 740
>GTX 750 Ti
