The people in my algorithm and data structure class were pretty much mirin' about my laptop. You can find refurbished ones for less than $300 at Microcenter.

>>
I'm what most people would call an Apple fanboy, but I'm not gonna defend this piece of shit.
Good:
The black color option is really good looking, I hope they bring it to their other laptops.
Thin as fuck with good battery life
Lighting every key with individual LEDs, pretty much how it should have been, but I want it in my MacBook Pro, not this piece of shit
Decent amount of RAM
Retina display
At least trying to push USB-C along, someone has to do it
Build quality

The bad:
Intel Core M
LITERALLY 2 ports
I personally dislike the force touch trackpad
Keyboard is horrible
The gold color option
Having only 2 ports and making USB-C one of them
Having only 2 ports and making a headphone jack one of them

Even though I and a lot of others are giving it shit, I don't really know how it could be improved (without changing the overall design).
Lovering the price is definitely one way to do it, it isn't worth at all what they are charging for it.
I was thinking maybe have a normal USB or USB-C on the right side, removing the headphone jack and putting a lightning connector on the left side instead of a USB-C, that's probably not a good idea, but I think this was a chance to push lightning headphones assuming they will with the iPhone 7

Wait for Intel to make faster Core-Ms, put a second USB-C port on the right side, make the keyboard slightly deeper and more clicky, reduce the price to $1k.

It's actually reminiscent of the first Air.
>Impressively thin at the time

Then in a few years Apple gradually fixed all that and Air became their most popular model.

Wouldn't they be able to fit a few more ports if they staggered them slightly?

something like this in mind
>>
>>52989025
Wouldn't that make the connection to the motherboard more fragile?

Basically, what I hope Apple do would be that they reduce the price, fix the cooling (it doesn't need to be fanless) and also fix the performance. Then they use it to replace the Air.

Or just put a Retina screen in the Macbook Air and retire this model, or even a 1080p screen in the Air, because there is no reason to buy the Air now since the screen is so bad.
>>
>>52989075
If it's either the MacBook or the Air, I'm hoping the Air dies. Apple's so close to perfection, they've got the right screen size, now they just need to make it 4:3.
>>
>>52989075
>Wouldn't that make the connection to the motherboard more fragile?
Not to shit on Apple, but is that something they've ever expressed concern about? I'm more concerned that they'd consider it aesthetically unpleasing.

I don't see them adding Retina to the Air unless they drop the MB price a bit. I mean anything can happen, and they've been more erratic with their strategy since Jobs died, so they're a little too unpredictable now.

I don't think they'll make the Air 1080p though. Implementing a screen that's not the standard "1x" and not "2x" would mean breaking the narrative they made up when they introduced the "Retina" line.

The Air had insufficient ports (maybe just one USB port, like the MB now) in its first generation, so I wouldn't be surprised in the least if they just figured they would follow the exact same procedure now as they did then. Maybe putting a second USB port on the right, but you just know that people will try to charge from both ports (then again, if that would work, then that'd be cool).

I'm more interested in seeing the rMBP picking up some of the riskier design choices Apple made with the MB.

Disregarding the original issue that the MB is lighter than your laptop, was there any point to your posts given that you seem to appreciate that these are two totally different use cases the MB and your laptop are satisfying?

I see no problem in physically fitting the second port horizontally, they just have to shrink the battery a tiny bit, and/or rearrange the mic cable on the audio sub-board if putting the connector on the left side.

>>52989280
Anon. MB is just overpriced in terms of price/performance. You could buy a normal laptop at the same specs for half the price of the MB.
>>
>>52989293
That's fair. I guess my point is that they could arguably fit more ports if they staggered them a bit since they couldn't have them on top of one another (like a double decker), but this would allow them to pack more ports in.

Then again, we're all assuming that Apple even cares enough about there being 1 port that they're making much of an effort to make multiple ports happen. This wouldn't be the first time that Apple largely ignored the "wish lists" of consumers for at least a year or so. Apple kinda just does what it wants and then the Verge retrospectively says that has solved all the problems that they never admitted to before and the whole cycle goes over and over again.
>>
>>52989322
tripfaggot. If you're honestly too stupid to understand what I've written, go back to /v/.
>>
>>52989326
>we're all assuming that Apple even cares enough about there being 1 port that they're making much of an effort to make multiple ports happen

Well, they did it with the original Air.

Currently, rMB is rich hipster tier, but once Apple starts trying to phase out Airs and sell rMB to normalfags, they might want to fix the rough corners.
>>
It has less power, less ports, and almost half the battery life of the last gen macbook air. The keyboard is the worst thing I've ever used, chinese knock off flip phone quality. Timb is running apple into the ground.
If you're considering this machine, just get the MBA, it's better in every way. INCLUDING display. They cheaped out on the LCD in the MB and the way the scaling works out you have less effectively resolution that the MBA. It's a fucking joke.

>Buying aluminium laptops
>Aluminium so thin it bends with HEAT, not even with force. With stuff known to reach >90ºC on the CPU.
>After all the proof during all these years that even if you manage to keep the temperature under control they bend to hell and back just by opening and closing the lid
>Popped hinges
>Misaligned seams
>As soon as they move away from a table into a bag they're ruined forever

And this is not exclusive to Apple stuff. A friend of mine got an Asus Zenbook some months ago and one of the rubber feet no longer makes contact with the table even after taking extreme care with it.

There's some stuff that should never be made with anything else than plastic, and mobility stuff (laptops, smartphones, etc.) are the perfect example.
>>
>>52989451
My rMBP13 has serious corrosion damage after 2 years of owning it and the uneven hinge issue popped up shortly after 1 year. Aluminium is a horrible material for devices that you use daily.
Stainless Steel is pure premium for mobile devices, Magnesium for durable laptops/tablets.

Oh well, my computer is just a tool, it made back its cost hundreds of times over, over its lifetime. Luckily I can switch platforms without causing much issue to my workflow.

>>52989673
How often do you use yours? Does throttling affect it much for what you do?
>>
>>52989650
I'd get one of those but it's a shame there doesn't seem to be a Spanish version of the keyboard in aliexpress.
>>
>>52989708
I use mine every day - it's my main PC right now, so it spends about half it's time docked to a monitor and USB hub.

Throttling hasn't been a problem for me. The back gets hot when under load for a while. IMO that's a good sign, as it means the heat is spreading as intended

It shouldnt be a design feature that the case is part of the thermal solution.

Pure fucking lazy design for idiots who put up with substandard products.

Well done, cockwomble.

Not all of them, but a lot of them. Particularly what I don't like in Mac trackpads is the single-piece design where a physical click means pressing the bottom of the whole trackpad in. Separate buttons allow me to use my thumb or index finger to hit the button while my middle finger moves the mouse, which is usually more precise, quicker to register (compared to a double tap and hold), and lets me lift my finger off the trackpad to get more movement. Physical buttons are also useful for spam-clicking since a trackpad usually registers the double click as something else.

The best trackpad I ever used was on my Asus K61IC. It spoiled me, ever other trackpad just feels like garbage now. It was instantly responsive to trackpad clicks and double click and hold, and the two-finger scrolling was precise enough that I could very easily adjust volume sliders and time on videos. Every other trackpad I've touched has some downside, some lag in input, something that makes it not as good.

Nothing has changed on my opinion since it came out: Its a tablet with keyboard and somehow impractical due to lel1port and obscure one at that.

But its beautiful and great tech demo. Its like a car concept that actually went into production. It has its audience, just not me.

>Is your laptop lighter than a MB?
>Yes because power is the primary goal of a laptop

Listen, you can get laptops with better specs (on everything except display, and the graphics on that thing can't even properly drive that meme tier "retina" display) that weigh at most 3 pounds for $500 or less. That argument is shit and went out the Window a while ago.

And I'm sure you'll come up with "MUH BUILD QUALITY! MUH BATTERY!" In reponse I say look up the Dell Chromebook 13, actually look at the reviews and specs, then stop for a moment and think about how retarded it is to buy Apple laptops at this point when Linux laptops are selling with similar luxury specsheets like glass trackpads, metal bodies, and the works at prices as low as half that of the Macbook lines, sometimes even moreso.
>>
>>52982531
It's pretty. And useful. Unfortunately, not pretty or useful enough to justify the price.

Yes but they're mid to low end models. Also do these have 12 hour battery life?

Dell Chromebook 13.

Metal Body, glass trackpad, matte finish 1080p IPS display, i3, 4GB of RAM, 10 hours of battery life, full support for Linux and Windows support is being worked on, and the SSD can be upgraded.

~$500.

Macbook Air and the new Macbook have no reason to exist at their price point when their competition is like this now.

It has terrible specs for a laptop. Its specs are unimpressive for a _phone_.
>Actually OS X supports it very well, it even comes preinstalled.
Supported by one operating system is not well supported. Granted, I last tested Linux on one of these nearly a month ago, but back then:

It has terrible specs for _your_ idea of a laptop. It's actually overspecced as far as I'm concerned.

DigabiOS, a live system that HS kids in Funland use to do their matriculation exams. These sorry excuses of a machine were not cooperative. Funny, given you'd expect this thing to have students as a target market. Not that that improves the support in any way.

Your position is because it is made by Apple, people have no expectation to run an alternative OS, correct?
>>
>>52998895
So you're admitting their hardware is not well supported? I'm not saying it's Apple's fault or looking for a culprit in general. For someone who prefers to run Linux, being poorly supported is a genuine downside.

What if I rephrase to
>terrible hardware support on Linux, at least at the moment
>>
>>52998999
checked, trips of truth
>>
>>52998999
At least try using a more recent distro.
>>
>>52998999
My position is that you cannot fault new hardware for not being supported by third party software. It's new and drivers don't just fucking write themselves on their own.
>For someone who prefers to run Linux, being poorly supported is a genuine downside.
Well yes, but you're a moron if you buy an Apple notebook with anything but OS X as your intended primary OS.
>>
ITT: Mom someone is using a platform I don't like. Make them stop!
>>
>>52999072
Which is why I didn't. The problem is, a lot of these kids don't know any better.
And really, a lot of mfgs' new and shiny machines work with 2 and 3.x kernels just fine. I can't recommend this machine to anyone buying it for school in this country, because the stupid adults decided to require everyine to run a 3.x kernel distro on their machine, and they can't.
To be fair, I wouldn't anyway. Even perfect, OotB support for every kernel since 1.1 wouldn't excuse the horrendous keyboard and the price point. The Linux support is a drop in the ocean for this thing's problems as far as I'm concerned.

It's a status symbol+ultra portable social media device+college notes/essays machine.
I will never buy one because I don't have a desire for any of those things.
If somebody else does, and they buy one, good for them, they got exactly what they wanted.
If somebody buys one expecting a rugged workstation or gaming laptop, then they have made a stupid decision, and I feel no pity for them.
>>
>>52998551
They don't sell these in many places in my country but maybe I could dig around if they are great. I already have an SSD which I could swap in it, that is if it's using 2,5" drives and not the smaller one.

Can you install regular Arch on it without hassle or do you have to backup some Google drivers first to get everything working?
