Ok so OP
Has your screen messed up on that yet? I had it and the screen showed this melting effect after a while

A two year old Asus K55VM I got for €479.
I know it's not great but for a budget machine, it does the job and handles anything I throw at it, even my occasional bouts of gaming addiction when hiding from everyday problems.

Pic related. The screen is an abomination but it runs pretty smoothly, looks nice and has a decent keyboard. Going to see if I can replace the 768p monstrosity with an asus x550jk screen.

A super beat-up and scratched mid-2009 white Macbook. It came from a school district, so of course the little apes went to town on it. Still runs magnificently, though. Upped the RAM to the maximum of 6GB and installed a solid state drive, and it now dual-boots El Capitan and Xubuntu.

I'm thinking of grabbing a used 2012 Macbook Pro from Best Buy tomorrow, though. The general manager tells me he can give me a really good deal on it. Might just swap out the SSD from my current Macbook onto it and up it to 8GB.

Can't play Crysis or type 80+ words per minute on most smartphones. Also can't get much work done on a 6 inch or smaller screen, unless you're OK with constant task switching or have amazing eyesight.

I had one of those, aspire 5520g 2.2ghz turion dual core, 4gb of ram and an 8600m gs. Nvidia gpu died twice, first time it got replaced, 2nd time died again and one of the ram slots stopped working as well. Still have it in my cupboard but doesnt output to inbuilt or external displays.

Inspiron 5548 (touchscreen i7 one)

Couldn't care less about the touchscreen, in fact I always disable it, but it was either 1080p touchscreen or 1366x768. Not going to use 1366x768 on a 15.6" laptop whose screen doesn't have a matte finish.

The bundled SSHD(a Seagate one with 1 TB of storage, 8 GB flash memory) heats up a considerable lot when actually used. On Windows 8.1 it would settle down and only heat up when transferring data from an external HDD to it. On Linux, it would be super hot all the time.

I bought a 500 GB 850 EVO a few days ago and it has no temperature problems whatsoever. I'm still somewhat sad, though, because on my current Debian install, the laptop's operating at ~50 °C on idle.

I saw the processor was at high frequencies on light load, so I disabled intel_pstate in favor of acpi_cpufreq. Setting the governor to powersave did lower the stated frequency on /proc/cpuinfo to 500 MHz on all threads, but sensors still accuse ~50 °C, while the laptop is still noticeably hot.

The CPU is an i7-5500U, which is supposed to run at a low temperature and save power during light load, so I imagine what's heating up is the AMD GPU/coprocessor. I dist-upgraded from Jessie to Stretch and fglrx-driver(or fglrx) have no installation candidates. I tried installing Catalyst from AMD's website, but it failed to restart kmod or something. Couldn't quite get it from the log. Not even sure this will help get the GPU temps down, but it's worth a try.

I would recommend this laptop if you plan on using Windows 8 or above. On 7 I had to use Synaptics for the touchpad and it sucks big time. The SSHD was also pretty hot on 7.

>>52983756
I really regret getting an inspiron. Do the latitudes have any problems with popular Linux distros out of the box? Do you have any hardware compatibility issues on OpenBSD?
>>
>>52984060
When I tried Ubuntu a few years ago everything worked including the touchscreen, but the pen digitizer didn't. I can't say how well it runs because I needed the pen so reinstalled Windows till I tried OpenBSD on it last year, everything works but the sound. In 5.7 I had a glitch where I had to boot it docked or it would crash, but that was fixed with 5.8. Not sure if it was an issue with my install or the OS though

In OpenBSD the only thing that doesn't work is the sound

I guess it's technically a tablet but I have the keyboard with an extra built in battery so it's usually in a laptop form factor.

I get around 12-15 hours of use.
