Question: Decent 5.1 speaker or a decent Headphone for movies?
>>
cool, finally a place to ask my question:

i am looking into improving my audio setup, and by improving i mean repalcing all of it.

so far i decided on getting the Audioengine D1 DAC but no idea what speakers to get. Few people i know personally suggested getting active ones, but adviced against Audioengine A5 (which i thought to be good match for the DAC) in favor of KRK Studio Monitors.

I primary intention is to have a setup capable of delivering solid sound while playig quiet atmospheric songs eg:

KRK Studio Monitors are pretty good to get if you're looking for used speakers, and if you have no intention of using them for actual audio production since they have bloated bass.

Otherwise, it's courtesy to include budget and listening space to get a better idea of what to suggest you.

I've always been a fan of Swan speakers when it came to powered speakers. Look up chanemusiccinema; the HiVi D1080IV were the last powered speakers I bought and they were much better than any studio monitor costing twice as much.

Posted this in other thread, but will post it again

I have a question.

Is it better to use studio monitors or receiver/speaker combo?

I need 2 speakers for my desk, and I don't know what to buy.

I was thinking about buying some kind of 7.2 receiver and 2 shelf speakers, with sub eventually, but would be studio monitors be better choice?

>tl;dr
>studio monitors vs receives/speaker combo
>>
I saw the Klipsch pro media today at Best Buy. Definitely larger than I thought and that is a plus! I did see the Logitech shit that did look better, but not spec wise.

Gonna pick up the speakers near the end of the week.
>>
Im in need of a small pair of speakers where I can hear everything, loudness does not matter to me, as I will just use them to transcribe songs.I just need to be able to hear the instruments well. Any recs?

Studio monitors are great, but they are fairly directional. Some of them can get very spendy, buy so can buying a receiver and bookshelf speakers.

What's your budget? You can get some really kickass sound from Bowers &/Wilkins, floorstanding speakers can pack some serious punch, but if it's just you listening to them you're probably better off with studio monitors.

I like to keep receivers for home theater and general media, studio monitors for computer.
>>
>>52974289
What you're describing are studio monitors, however they generally aren't very small.
>>
>>52974634

For products that I was looking, pair of studio monitors costs about same/less than some receiver/speaker combo.

I don't wanna go and spend same amount of money on 7.2 receiver with all options, because I don't wanna to buy something mediocre, when for same amount of money that I'm going to spend on receiver only, I can get great pair of studio monitors.

I don't know much about speakers but I've wanted a pair of KRK Rokit 6 (specifically grey limited edition since I saw / listened to them in a music shop I worked) for some years.
Any better options for about the same money?
Listened to Yamaha HS50s as well and prefer KRK. Already have a pair of KRK KNS8400 as well.

if you like them you should totally go for them
>>

I'm a bit clueless to what I'll need besides the actual speakers though.
I remember it as external sound card, stand(s) and cables but that all added up to like $700 in this gommie-tier tax country.

stands are useful but since the 6" aren't too big you can usually just prop them up with something on the desk just as well
you can use them with any kind of connectors (as then have RCA, XLR and TRS) as long as you have the right adapters for it, but the most common problem is the volume control
for example if you just use one of the typical 3.5mm jack to 2x RCA cables to hook them up straight to the mainboard's audio out then you'd need to control the volume with only the windows audio mixer. which works, but can be really annoying sometimes and even a bit dangerous in case of a freeze or crash that outputs full volume straight to your face - all you can do is unplug
you can use a hardware volume control like the TC level pilot to have some control right on your desk but mostly people go with the small audio interface route, for example a little box like the focusrite scarlet 2i2 is only a tad more than the level pilot and is a full blown sound card with symmetric outputs and a volume control on the front
>>

disregard them
I just read the review on http://noaudiophile.com of B5 and they need a shitload of power to sound well

I got monitor audio BX2, they might be around where you live, and in UK(where they are based) they are often rather cheap because new iteration came out - B2
then wharfedales are woth to checkout, depending on availability near you

check german or UK amazon, sometimes its lucky and theres shipping to other countries, but returning might be costly if not ideal

>Ten years after...Happy anniversary T-Amp!

>Exactly ten years ago (January, 2005) we published a review that quickly caused a stir among audiophiles around the world: the T-Amp phenomenon was born! That controversial article made online sales of the tiny, cheap and unbelievably good sounding Class D amplifier increase exponentially, so much that even the financial magazine Forbes published an article (see excerpt below) about the unexpected success of the small Company selling the T-Amp. The guys at Sonic Impact weren't aware of the huge potential of that small plasticky toy they were selling for about 25$. Now the Company seems to be out of business (at least, their website no longer exists) but during the early days of the T-Amp they used to sell 4,000 units per month (and just few hundreds before our review).

I'm aware they'll be shit compared to passive speakers. I'm currently using a $30 speaker bar so literally anything is a step up. Do you know of any sub-$50 Active speaker/Amp-passive-combo that I could get? I'm looking for a simple high quality bluetooth/wireless speaker for my bedroom.

I've been interested in both the Bose Sound Touch 20 and Sound Touch 30, and reviews are saying they're fantastic.

My only issue is the price. It's damn expensive and I live in Australia and the price is already jacked up.

Generally all I do is hook up my laptop or smartphone via bluetooth or auxiliary.

If anyone has any idea of something of equivalent quality for a lesser price I'd be greatly interested to hear your point of view.

Get an ebay/chinese $20-30 t-amp. Spend the rest on entry level bookshelf speakers off of craigslist from Energy, Infinity, or whatever other reputable maker.

Bam. That'll blow away any computer/bluetooth speaker.

3.5mm is compatible with RCA jacks - you just need to go buy a cable.

Is there any alternatives to a reciever so i can alternate between using headphones and my speakers?

my receiver is massive, and i'd like something smaller.

>>
>>52983462
All you have to do is find a headphone amp that has the added function of doubling as a preamp. So, it'll have a line output that's volume-controllable. They're not uncommon, but you might have to pay more. Then get a small speaker amp to use as a power amp.

e.g. here's a DAC that has all the functions you want:

So, does it make sense to buy 2.0 amp for 2 speakers, but run active subwoofer?

If signal is run trough sub first, would there be signal loss?

Or in this case, is it okay to use subwoofer amp instead dedicated 2.0 amp for speakers?

>So, does it make sense to buy 2.0 amp for 2 speakers, but run active subwoofer?
Sure if you want more low end extension.

>If signal is run trough sub first, would there be signal loss?
Nothing meaningful.

>Or in this case, is it okay to use subwoofer amp instead dedicated 2.0 amp for speakers?
No. The best setup would be to get an integrated stereo amplifier with a sub pre out. The amp will drive the two main loudspeakers and send a signal to the sub on line level. You match the volume from the subwoofer once. Most subwoofers are active designs.

Something like Yamaha A-S301 would do the trick.

Normally you would equalize the sound, so that it would fit the response of the speakers.

As this looks like an instrument amplifier, you would usually tune it into what distinctive sound you want out of it.
