Intended for users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are four ways to try Linux, you can:

1) Install a Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
2) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full Linux experience".
3) Dual-boot Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about Linux)
4) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with Linux (not recommended)

Before asking, please search for answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe wine can make up for it.

Now posting from my newly installed Ubuntu, thanks for the info.

I've started to learn some webdev and stuff, and read that linux was a great complement for learning. I know that you people shit on Ubuntu, but I wanted to make the transition from Windows to Linux as smoothly as possible.

When I'm more experienced with it, which distro should I pick based on webdev?
>>
>>52941189
Your OS shouldn't matter for your webdev-things anyway.
>>
>>52941189
anything that is not purely "based on" is fine.
debian, fedora, arch, funtoo/gentoo, slackware, openSUSE...
it doesn't matter for your webdev.

I'm trying to transition into Linux by running it in a VM for about two weeks now and have been reading on open and closed source GPU drivers. What I can get is that Intel is king, Nvidia sucks ass on open source but is decent at proprietary, and AMD might save everyone in Linux with their recent open sourcing of drivers. My doubts are how Nvidia's open source alternative fares on things like video playing, light gaming, and emulators like dolphin. I also got the cuck card, but I'd like to use as much free software as possible. I don't even game anymore so that's not an issue, what I'd like is good video playback
>>
>>52943979
video playback will most likely be fine, i'm not sure about dolphin. do you have an intel cpu by chance?
>>
>>52943979
Nouveau is fine for desktop usage, it's just not great for opengl stuff (like games)

I run the closed nvidia drivers on my gtx960 and gtx980's and have had zero issues, but I don't really game, they are for computation

A lot of people run into issues with exotic configurations not working well with the default package manager configs (especially upgrading). I bypass that crap and just install the drivers manually so I can tweak xorg how I need it without the package manager fucking up my existing configs.

>>
>>52944294
you can set it in the kernel command line prior to kernel mode setting or you can create a default xorg.conf and specify it there

Another way is to do it on-the-fly with xrandr, but you will need to write a startup script

>I run the closed nvidia drivers on my gtx960 and gtx980's and have had zero issues,
Are they from their site? Debian supplies nvidia drivers, but I can't test them. I haven't touched xorg at all since I'm on one window.
>>
>>52944342
>sudo aptitude install arandr
>arandr
Picture related, what happened.
>>
>>52944420
yeah I get the .run files straight from nvidia and run them in tty2 after I stop my dm

I usually enable dkms too so I don't have to reinstall following kernel updates

If I don't have an exotic setup I let the installer populate xorg.conf, otherwise I deny it and use my existing config (if I'm using multiple GPUs)

Updating via the repos is nice and all but 99.9% of the time people have issues with their graphics drivers it's because of the packaging and default configs
>>
>>52944488
don;t use a front-end just use xrandr directly, it's a piece of cake

xrandr --newmode "2560x1080_60.00" MODELINEGOESHERE

to add the mode and then:

xrandr --addmode HDMI-0 2560x1080_60.00

I'm sorry I've been lying to you. I am running Debian stretch with xfce right now and was just curious how nouveau fared against Nvidia's proprietary drivers.
I was using the latter, but I was having audio issues and didn't know what was up, so I went the windows baby way and reinstalled from a live USB. Overall, it's been working, but it's tearing everywhere since I haven't configured anything.

Would you be kind enough to at least share some configs? Most of them look very similar, but I'd like to see someone with Maxwell. I'm on a few arch wikis with xrandr and Nvidia drivers and am about to try again with Nvidia's latest branch. Have some more anthropomorphous phones.

Hello familia

I've been trying to install Debian (stable) on my PC all day now, but I keep running into grub rescue "error: unknown filesystem"

I've tried the typical "ls" command which gave me "(hd0) (hd0,msdos1)" and then setting prefix, then "insmod normal" but at that point I'd get error:unknown filesystem again.

I've got HD sda/sdb (1TB each) and I've tried installing the grub boot loader on both of them, didn't work. BTW, to make sure I also tried installing back my Windows 10 and it seemed to work fine.

Also I'm by no means a /g/ expert but at very least I'm not completely retarded either and am willing to do the research. Just thought I'd ask here if someone else got any opinions/experience I haven't tried yet.

Currently trying to install this from my USB with the small/net ISO. I'm not too sure what else I could do to make this work atm. :(

I'd just like to interject for moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.
There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux

Use Ubuntu GNOME or Kubuntu, or any of the flavors, really. Personally I really like Lubuntu.

Everything else the first reply said is on point, don't let what /g/ says make you insecure. Use a distro that you like and that does what you need.
>>

Gentoo is not better than Arch in terms of time-sucking and autism.

It's a better minimal distribution, sure. Allows more customization, sure. But it is not somehow less autistic to fuck around setting up a Gentoo install than it is to fuck around setting up an Arch install.

They're both hobbyist/advanced distributions for people who want to set up their own system how they want it. Arch is easier than Gentoo but it doesn't make it worse, it makes it somewhat different.

>>
>>52950304
It doesn't allow more customization, it's just more of a pain in the ass on other distributions. You're still free to edit the build-process how you want.
>>
>>52942009
This. Ubuntu is marketed as "mom and dad's linux". It's supposed to be usable for the tech illiterate. Betraying the trust of those people and putting datamining spy shit in a Linux distribution makes them almost as bad as Microsoft. They betrayed the community, their userbase, and defeated the purpose of Linux.

Fuck Canonical. If you want to go Ubuntu, use a flavor. Boycott default.
>>
>>52942105
It's MemeOS. Just use an Ubuntu Flavour or Debian if you want APT. (Do not use vanilla ubuntu, it's loaded with Amazon spyware. Anyone who says it can be disabled is a naive idiot.)

Elementary has outdated repos, little support or maintenance, and its visuals (the only real draw) are no longer great by any standards.

All that said, I wouldn't use an APT distribution. I prefer RPM. If you care to bother installing Gentoo, Portage is the greatest package manager of them all.

Linux From Scratch is the only truly trustworthy Linux, and even then the Kernel is backdoored and all that.

Use a distribution that isn't run by people with a vested interest in stealing your information, and one that doesn't pull shit like slipping spyware into Linux anyway.

Hello /g/entoomen, I have been testing different distros (debian, mint, *buntu, arch, fedora) and I have a problem occuring on ALL of them, on all DEs (I think it's Xorg and/or hardware related) :

When I have multiple windows open, the focus is STUCK to one window.
I can't click other windows to bring them to the front, same for the menu bar and dialog boxes.
Alt-tab is functional but doesn't bring windows to the front.
Even to install a distro I often need to use my keyboard only.
(GTX 660, mouse : razer deathadder)

Please share your magic /g/, it's the only thing that makes me keep my windows partition.

Win7 is going to be my last Windows version, and I'm trying to decide between Debian and OpenSUSE. On one hand, the 3 most popular distros(Plus SteamOS) are Debian based, so everything is going to be available for it, and there's plenty of support. On the other hand, I hear that it tends to be super outdated, to the tune of years. In OpenSUSE's favor, it's got a thing to build packages from any flavor of Linux, some fancy configuration tool, and is 100% designed around being an easy to use desktop installation.

Is my choice basically outdated with better support, or up-to-date and polished with less support, or are there other things I should consider? It'll be for generic day to day desktop use, with whatever gaming I can, and I'll keep Win7 to switch to for games that need it.

Tab is an incredibly simplified format, standard notation is a relatively complex format.

Maybe you should try searching for a tab writer instead.

Also, there's a lot of web based tab writing applications out there that import to several different formats.
