I'm trying to transition into Linux by running it in a VM for about two weeks now and have been reading on open and closed source GPU drivers. What I can get is that Intel is king, Nvidia sucks ass on open source but is decent at proprietary, and AMD might save everyone in Linux with their recent open sourcing of drivers. My doubts are how Nvidia's open source alternative fares on things like video playing, light gaming, and emulators like dolphin. A lot of people run into issues with exotic configurations not working well with the default package manager configs (especially upgrading). I bypass that crap and just install the drivers manually so I can tweak xorg how I need it without the package manager fucking up my existing configs.

I was using the latter, but I was having audio issues and didn't know what was up, so I went the windows baby way and reinstalled from a live USB. Overall, it's been working, but it's tearing everywhere since I haven't configured anything.

I've been trying to install Debian (stable) on my PC all day now, but I keep running into grub rescue "error: unknown filesystem"
I've tried the typical "ls" command which gave me "(hd0) (hd0,msdos1)" and then setting prefix, then "insmod normal" but at that point I'd get error:unknown filesystem again.
I've got HD sda/sdb (1TB each) and I've tried installing the grub boot loader on both of them, didn't work. BTW, to make sure I also tried installing back my Windows 10 and it seemed to work fine.
Also I'm by no means a /g/ expert but at very least I'm not completely retarded either and am willing to do the research. Just thought I'd ask here if someone else got any opinions/experience I haven't tried yet.

Hello /g/entoomen, I have been testing different distros (debian, mint, *buntu, arch, fedora) and I have a problem occuring on ALL of them, on all DEs (I think it's Xorg and/or hardware related) :
When I have multiple windows open, the focus is STUCK to one window.
I can't click other windows to bring them to the front, same for the menu bar and dialog boxes.
Alt-tab is functional but doesn't bring windows to the front.
Even to install a distro I often need to use my keyboard only.

Hey guys i need some help. I did a minimal debian 8.3 install (No DE or any other bloatware) and installed xorg, lightdm and xfce4. And now i have problems with wifi. lspci says my network controller is Qualcom Atheros QCA9565 / AR9565, so I installed firmware-atheros package. I also downloaded all the non-free firmware .deb packages from debian.org and put them into /usr/local/lib/firmware. the weird thing is that the wifi connection shows up on network-manager-gnome, it says its connected, and i can even do # apt-get update, it updates the list form the server. but when i try and install something, its stuck at 0%. halp. do i just need to dpkg-reconfigure something?

Win7 is going to be my last Windows version, and I'm trying to decide between Debian and OpenSUSE. On one hand, the 3 most popular distros(Plus SteamOS) are Debian based, so everything is going to be available for it, and there's plenty of support. On the other hand, I hear that it tends to be super outdated, to the tune of years. In OpenSUSE's favor, it's got a thing to build packages from any flavor of Linux, some fancy configuration tool, and is 100% designed around being an easy to use desktop installation.
Is my choice basically outdated with better support, or up-to-date and polished with less support, or are there other things I should consider? It'll be for generic day to day desktop use, with whatever gaming I can, and I'll keep Win7 to switch to for games that need it.
