I know this is bait but even 8gb of RAM for the ITX build I just made for my mom is overkill. Facebook eBay and Netflix don't need no 8 gibibytes of ramerino. She definitely doesn't need no God damn 16 giberygoops in that bitch.
>>52938725
Yeah whatever...
I've been using 2gb ddr2 since 2006 and theres been very few instances where I felt I needed more.
>>52938846
Depends on OS anon. Win10 eats like 6gb.
>>52938846
Does she open lots of tabs? RAM is cheap, and provides great bang for your buck in terms of user experience.
>>52939137
What do you use your computer for?
>>52939162
what in the actual fuck are you doing to your windows 10 install? Jesus christ, I've never seen mine go over 2gb when nothing else is running.
>>52939206
Are you sure you're not reading that as ram free? Clean install, no applications running. Everything using ram is Windows built-in.
>>52939162
win10 uses 1.6-1.7gb, just like windows 7 and windows 8 i dont know what crack you're smoking
>>52938725
>not having at least 32GB of RAM in your main computer
>>52939162
3.2GB with 10+ Chrome tabs. When you give it 32GB to work with, it will use 6GB, since it will pretty much load everything in RAM to make it faster. Are you actually buying RAM to not use it or something?

I need to find one of those headers for my hot air station so much, but it's some noname china model and I'm not sure which sizes would fit properly for SOP44 chips.
>>52938725
i bought a 32 GB kit of ram a few years ago.
i don't think i've ever used more than 4 GB at once.

i know i need more, im just too poor.
>>52938725
i'm not really a RAM fag but i'll get a 8-dimms quad-channel mbo (2011-3) and i'll only want to start with 1 16gb module;
Should i be worried about things not working?
Thanks in advance

If I have 12 GB can I just get more
>>52938725
The computer I built in 2009 had 4GB, then I upgrade to 8GB 2 years later. But that turned out to be insufficient. When I built my current computer last year I put in 32GB instead of 16GB because I figured I would need more. And that actually turned out quite true. Which I would have gone with 64 GB though for those few times I need to run multiple virtual machines for developing.
Why would I buy more ram then I'm using? I have 12gb ram in my PC and I rarely go higher than 10.
I just upgraded my desktop from 4 to 6GB, pretty satisfied. My next computer will have 32GB ECC RAM, but that's because I'll be replacing my desktop with a VM on my next VM server
>>52942224
You'd used more if you're having it
>using old desktop
>1GB
>can't find cheap DDR1 RAM
Feels bad man.
>>52942238
And why exactly? Most of my ram goes up to vm's. They have a fixed size of ram usage
>>52942246
>buy 8x1GB RAM from china because cheap
>half the modules are either 512MB or 256MB, rest just didn't work
>>52942228
What kind of CPU are you intending to have in it? I've been considering doing a OpenSUSE kvm host hosting a pci passthrough windows VM for gaymen. But my 6 core intel CPU doesn't really cut it when I have to dedicate 2 cores to the host. I'm considering buying an Intel EE with 8 cores but that one is just too expensive to justify at the moment. And the server processors with 12 cores and more are just clocked too low.
>>52939346
>wifi
>>52942318
I want it to be an mITX build so I was considering an Atom C2750. None of my VMs really require power, I'd be good with Atom N270 power for most of these VMs
>>52938725
My fucking phone has 4GB RAM
>>52939346
How is 18GB in use? What are you doing?
>tfw using Maya alone for one of my projects uses up 5gb of my 16gb

2 VS projects because I'm a hoarder
40+ chrome tabs open because i'm a hoarder

I need to pull the trigger and upgrade my shitty netbook to 4 GB. My main has 16 GB, my laptop has 8 GB, netbook still stuck on 2 GB.
People said that like 8 years ago.

Hi
>not having at least 64GB of RAM
>>52943463
Lies. It clearly states 63.9GB. Enjoy your cheap Chinese RAM.
>>52938725
I practically never use more than 2 gigs of the 8 I have.
>>52943463

The only cases where 8GB has not been enough for me are CFD simulations and point cloud data.

Eh i'm getting 8 gigs for free soon. But i plan on buying 16 for fun later this year.
I got 16GB of ram in my last build; no regrets. Next build will be 32GB, because why the fuck not. Looking forward to 3DXPoint shenanigans in the near future.
And to all the people wondering why Windows is eating all your ram, it's because Windows uses something called Superfetch, it fills up a percentage of your ram with cached shit to make things run faster. I almost never see my ram usage dip below 25%.

Nice try OP. My main box has 2GB of RAM, and runs flawlessly.
It's a headless filesever.
The TV box has 4GB, but only becuse I had a discarded 4GB sodimm for it.
12GB is the sweet spot right now.

You're aware that you can upload images directly to 4chan, right?
Oh god, too many people here who wasted money on buying RAM they didn't need.
If you don't know how much RAM you need, then just get 8GB. If you needed more, you'd know how much to get because at that point you have some really specific use case that doesn't apply to anyone but you.
>>52942695
what are you drawing?
i'm drawing a house in my windows vm (system has 20G ram, VM currently set to 6GB)
16gb is my limit these days.
Feels good to be master race since 2012.
I'm happy with this.
>>52945172
>master race
my fucking laptop has more video ram that you
>>52939346
how the fuck are you using 18 fucking GB? Server?
I just went from 6gb to 16gb.
Windows uses about another 800mb of ram and it seems to help.
>>52946908
Here is the speccy.
>Have 16GB
>Start drawing/animating in Photoshop.

>>52938725
>RAMlet
The amount doesn't matter, it's about how the OS uses it.
>>52947006
Your page file is too small. Are you low on disk space?
>>52947021
no the amount definitely matters when you're doing activities that load into the ram lol
I use FL studio with samples. a lot of samples.
>>52939137
Unused ram is wasted ram amirite, the less ram the more optimized the os amirite.
>>52947060
This isn't true, because the OS behaves a different way when less free RAM is available. For example with Android it force closes programs to free up RAM that is needed. This is as you say, but it makes for a horrible user experience. Windows will warn when this condition is happening.

Yeah, the Photoshop etc.. temp files can grow pretty massive and end up eating craploads of space on my relatively small SSDs.
Can't wait till the SSD prices drop this summer.

Be honest OP, you were simply looking for an excuse to use the word 'ramlet'

I think you can separate the temp files and put them on a separate drive.
