Well it would take a long time to explain, but think light as not being the maximum speed but merely travelling at the maximum speed. Like how if you wanted to go from new york to Moscow, you'd travel in the shortest route possible. Light is travelling in the shortest route possible, but everything with matter is taking the long way around.
This will likely confuse you more but really it's a hard limit on the speed of anything. Going back to maxwell's equations will help a little.
There's a book called 'Why does E=MC2' by Brian Cox and Jeff Forshaw that will cast MUCH more light on the problem. (hue)
