Intended for users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are four ways to try Linux, you can:

1) Install a Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
2) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full Linux experience".
3) Dual-boot Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about Linux)
4) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with Linux (not recommended)

Before asking, please search for answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe wine can make up for it.

Right now I have no fucking clue which it's using

how would I check? Obviously I want to use the AMD one
>>
>>52931436
You said it reports the wrong one. It reports 2 gpus though that's why I want to know which gpu you really have. Is this a laptop? If yes, look at your distros wiki on hybrid graphics.
>>
>>52931479
I don't know which one it's using, so I don't know if it's correct or not. I have both of those GPUs

at this point I'm about 90% sure that it's using the intel one, not the AMD one, which is wrong in the sense that nobody on earth would want to use the intel one when a dedicated one is available

and yes it's a laptop
>>
>>52931537
If it's a laptop it actually does make sense to switch between the intel and tha amd graphics depending on how gpu intensive something is for power saving. Read your distros wiki page on hybrid graphics. If it's not well written read the one on the debian wiki and the arch wiki.

What distro should I use for my home server?
I've added an SSD to the server for the OS to go on and I need to reinstall, so I figured now was an opportunity to try something new, and maybe set up some fancy new shit like partitionless btrfs filesystems + subvolumes.

I kind of want to stay away from Debian-based things, since dkpg/apt is so fucking slow.
>>
>>52931750
Probably the mirrors that are slow fampai
>>
>>52931750
Centos
>>
>>52931750
What you're gonna use it for?

It may sound strange but I've been using Arch Linux for my home server and it's doing fine (but pacman can fuck up your configs).

You can always use CentOS.
>>
>>52931750
Debian stable, use the right mirrors and a reasonably new version of apt
>>
>>52931758
No, dpkg is known to be slow on 'new' filesystems. It's even in their FAQ:
https://wiki.debian.org/Teams/Dpkg/FAQ#Q:_Why_is_dpkg_so_slow_when_using_new_filesystems_such_as_btrfs_or_ext4.3F
>>
>>52931779
Torrenting, small webserver, ssh, maybe a mail server, maybe owncloud, backup for my desktop.
>>
>>52931787
Sure, it's "slow"
>>
>>52931787
Huh, I guess I just never noticed. Oh well
>>
>>52931804
I've used much quicker package managers, and whenever I try to use apt, it feels like such a slog.
>>
>>52931750
Why would you put new and fancy shit on a server?
>>

>>
>>52931573

I do not care about it. I just want the AMD one. Fuck switching

>Where the output should be AMD.

Mesa DRI Intel(R) Skylake ULT GT2

what am I supposed to do now?
>>
>>52931820
I like new fancy shit. I use Arch on my desktop and use some of the fancy shit on there and sometimes think to myself "this would be great for a server".
>>
>>52931799
Go for CentOS then.

Or, if you're interested, you can look about using *BSD such as FreeBSD and FreeNAS.
>>
I use windows because it can run recent games like firewatch without hoping for it to work on wine with 25% of the actual hardware power due to shit GNU drivers.
>>
>>52931787
When does doing it right equal slow.
fsync calls are necessary to maintain states in the case of failure.
If other package managers don't do that, they are inherently less safe in case of failure when updating.
Not doing fsync calls on ext4/btrfs would be the bug.

>>52935707
The cycle goes like this.

The base distro is Fedora.
Redhat takes Fedora, puts it through their own testing and QC and from Fedora builds RHEL.
Redhat """sells""" RHEL but because it's been built from free software they have to release source code of every package.
CentOS project takes source code of RHEL provided by redhat and builds their own binary compatible distro (CentOS).

Redhat cooperates with CentOS project and centos project cooperates with redhat (most advisory board of centos are actually redhat employees) because redhat is aware that it's customers care about support which centos doesn't provide so centos is not really a competition for them

How is nouveau nowadays? What can't I do with it? If I can play chinese cartoons with insane settings on mpv, then it would be fine. Having the dolphin-emulator work at least decently would be cool too. I want to move away from Windows and am looking ahead for Polaris with AMDGPU.

Hi guys. I recently bought a new tv, and tried using it as my primary screen. It's otherwise fine, but when the screen goes dark enough, it decides it doesn't need to light up the backlight anymore, which results in a distracting and ugly dark-blink until something bright enough happens, even if it's just one gray pixel in the corner.

Is there a way to force one (dark blue) pixel to sit in the corner to prevent this from happening? I tried to force kruler to stay on top, but video and image fullscreen programs bypass the "on-topness" stack entirely.

How does Linux typically handle CPU overheating? With my laptop, Windows typically throttles and runs like complete shit until the temperature normalizes. Linux doesn't seem to do that, but does freeze and requires a hard-reset (shortly after which it's prone to freeze again). Does this sound like overheating?

my old laptop just throttles later than on windows, i think this depends on the drivers.

Is this logical? I'm doing my first install and I'm a bit confused about partitions and mounting. Can I use LVM to change my partitions afterwards? Is this how this works?

No. steam supplies its own libs and uses then, you can tell them to use system libs but the main libs cannot be changed.
Just let steam manage it.

I would use Linux again if the software I use most was supported on it. GIMP is no replacement for the Adobe apps, and LibreOffice is no replacement for Office 365. Sorry.

Another reason I don't use Linux is that the people I have met who are into it use the same kind of rhetoric that is used in the official ISIS magazine. It makes me feel utterly unsafe to leave problem solving into these people's hands.

I'm not saying that in an unfriendly tone or anything, I'm saying it as a former Gentoo and Xubuntu user who had a lot of bad experiences with the Linux community. Meanwhile, Microsoft is excelling in customer service these days and have nicer people posting on their forums.

I wonder what someone in a Friendly Linux Thread could say to this, to help me get back my willingness to try out Linux? I really did like it back then...
