What's the longest an HDD has lasted you, /g/, and what's the shortest? Did they die unnanounced or slowly start to fail?

Gonna buy an enclosure for an HDD bought in 2008. 8 years of existence, 4-5 years of use, how much longer can this thing last? Working absolutely fine so far.

I have a working 80GB seagate barracuda from 2003. It had daily use until 2010. I don't use it regularly anymore, but it still spins up and works.
>>
never lost a drive but then again I never used any disk for more than 6 years
they're all seagate btw

I have a pair of Hitachi 160GB drives with a manufacturing date of Jan '06 that work fine to this day. Granted they haven't been heavily used. Also have an IBM AT with an old 30MB drive that still runs, was made in like 1985. I only power it up maybe once a year though.

I've had one drive die without warning, a Seagate 1TB. It was a boot drive for my backup server, replaced it ant nothing of value was lost.

For longest, this drive.

Works fine, but the drive is "failing" according to SMART due to excessive power-on hours (nearly 20k IIRC, don't have anything I can plug it into right now to get the SMART data).

As for shortest, I don't know since I haven't really had a drive with a notably short lifespan.

I have working drives from 1998-2000, laptop and desktop.
I have a 2005 80GB Seagate still operating (0 bad sectors).
2006 250GB Barracuda NS, ditto.
2008 500GB Samsung, ditto.

I think a 1TB WD External died after about a year or year and half.
>>
My system drive is a 1tb Samsung @ almost 60 000 hours. Still going strong even though sometimes I kick into it hard enough to make it skip.

I have some mid 90's HDD's that are still going strong.

I had a Seagate drive let out a lot of magic smoke, and it still works.
>>
Longest is probably a 1.5 TB Seagate external I bought in 2009. The enclosure died two years ago but the disk still works. It's plugged into the desktop now through the SATA connection.

Shortest was a laptop drive that died three days after buying it new. Didn't even bother opening it.

Just checked the drive, power on time is 3.8 years. The reallocated sector count is flagged, but the values haven't changed from the time I manually moved some slower sectors, so it's more or less a false positive.

I have honestly never had a HDD die on me. I have a fully functional 40GB IDE drive at home that was still working when I last used it and a nearly 10 year old 320gb laptop HDD western digital blue that still works. I have a variety of sata drives from 80GB up to 1.5TB and they all still work fine.

For fucks sake even my 60GB maxtor and 40GB seagate still work. What do you do to your hard drives?
>>
>>52929874
forgot to mention, my dad has a 20GB hard drive he still uses to copy documents from his desktop to his laptop and vice versa because he's too much of a cheap fuck to get a usb when what he already has just works. Forgot the brand of the hard disk though because it's in an enclosure.

somewhat, and it's still shit.

my first HDD was a 3GB, then a 2GB i added.

when i got a 80GB i was in heaven.

recently bought a working 160GB WD for a legacy build.

i'm glad i didn't have to deal with the sub-GB era on my end, i mean i used computers with small drives sure and 5.25 floppies, but never had one of my own.

aye guys how about those 4TB Toshiba X300 drives on newegg? they're the cheapest 7200 rpm 4TB drives available at $135 and aside from them being loud, the next stop on the cheap train is $160 for a 4TB HGST and $197 for a WD black.

looking to consolidate three drives (1 2tb and 2 1tb drives) as cheaply as possible but not interested in slower rpm drives.

shitgate just seems to be bad in recent years, but if I remember right all of those memes are based on some blackblaze shit from 2012-13 that only showed above-average failures for one capacity

Because this has turned into a bizarre low-capacity brag thread I feel an obligation to say I've never had a hard drive last longer than seven years--four-five being the average lifespan.

WD's, in my anecdotal experience, fail sooner but are more recoverable; seagate eke out a bit longer a lifetime but die for dead when they go.

Always buying 3TB or 5 TB now, avoiding 2TB and 4TB like the plague.

My Sun Ultra 5 has an original 4GB IDE drive from 1998 that still works, but it's godawful slow and noisy so I replaced it with a higher-RPM 1TB IDE drive. I'd use a SATA adapter but I haven't met one that can do DMA properly with the machine.

in general no, but a lot of people got burned by 1.5TB drive then again with 3TB drives for the same reason, now any drive divisible by 1.5TB is a non-starter for a lot of those people even with how now they have platters that get into the 1.2TB range, and some of the better value drives are 3TB drives because no one wants to buy them because of the people bad mouthing them now when it was seagate's fault for pushing shitty drives out the door

> I've never seen a better tech community.
you must not have been to many other tech communities, this place is fun for shitposting but the actual knowledge level is pretty low, nothing you're talking about probably couldn't have been answered with a minute max of googling, this place is mostly full of redditors and gamertards from /v/ regurgitating bullshit from shill sites and blogging about what hot shit they are because they cobbled together a "rig" other /v/edditors spoonfed to them in the first place, or because they use a freely available UNIX-like operating system and occasionally open a terminal and know how to change directories around and install packages

it's not very often I see someone who seems really passionate or knowledgeable about tech beyond headlines about the latest and "greatest" facebook machines

i have 80GB Maxtor from 2001 that is operation since then 24/7.
>>
>>52935217
You're fine, buddy. I had my CPU overclocked and despite windows working flawlessly, it was apparently unstable and would freeze on install with Linux. So it bricked my USB drive and bricked my SSD mid install. Don't know how all I know is 2 weeks of troubleshooting couldn't fix it.

But you're most likely perfectly fine, brother

I have a 128mb tape drive that I have to use a serial port to use to the old school drive caddie.

It must be +10 years old.

My windows 98 machine still works. Probably my older computers would be working too, but I'm not going to try that.
>>
My dad's 20 mb hdd. Still works tho. The shortest was my first ssd, 3 days and poof, or should I say, crash?
>>
>>52928383
I had a 12 year old drive that was still working when I switched it to an SSD.
>>
MY samsung 2tb has 40k hours on it and still works great. I think I might have an old WD 640gb with more, but it's in a different computer.

I really miss samsung.
>>
>>52935299
Something similar happened to me too, I was able to fix it by completely wiping the usb and hdd and repartitioning them using gparted.
>>
>>52935299
Unfortunately I didn't have an operating system because my USB and my SSD were bricked. Luckily it happened within 90 days so newegg send me a brand new SSD.

I have the 10GB Hdd from my original xbox that still works. I pulled it after the 360 came out
>>
I have a 40 and 120 gig IDE drive that still work, I would guess they are easily 15+ years old.

I bought a 1st gen 36 gig raptor when they came out, and after 2 days it stopped working. RMA'd it and the new one still works today.

Highest lasting drive I have is a WD blue 1TB. It has 1436 days and 11 hours on it with 8,235 start/stop counts.
>>
>>52928383
I've got old IDE drives from the 90s that still work. SMART says that failure is imminent on them, and has for years. Some of them won't actually boot an OS, but they still work for storage--not that I'd trust them with anything I didn't want to lose.

I've also got a 2gb laptop drive that still works perfectly, from an old Thinkpad. I bought it used, so I'm not sure how old it actually is, but it originally came with Windows 2K.

I bought a refurbished Seagate 3TB here while back. I lasted about 2 days. That's the risk you run with refurbished shit though.

holy shit that is being a cheap fuck... i just bought a 32 gig USB thumbdrive for $15, locally at a discount store. Right now, i only use it for holding cracked install files and updates, driver, scaled down texture packs etc for Fallout 4, as a few friends have been wanting the game. beats the fuck out of dragging around my 500 gig pocketdrive (it's small but this is tiny).

I'm using about a 7 year old HDD right now, it's noisy but it's still chugging along.

I've never had a storage device failure.

Only things that have come close is this old 1gb flash drive now only shows 512MB, and I have a very old Intel SSD that is starting to slow down. I've abused it plenty with VM's though.
>>
I'm using my 2008 laptop's hard drive in my mom's computer, seems like it's still working. The PCB on it is beautiful though, it's such a wonderful shade of teal. I'm glad it hasn't died yet.

Longest: Slightly over 12 years. I forget the exact model, but it was a Hitachi.
Shortest (not counting DOA): 1 day. Western Digital Raptor 150, but that hardly matters: any vendor could have had a bad batch.

An honourable mention to the Quantum Fireball 540 MB I once had, which was unbelievably aptly named and actually exploded when the heads crashed, sending platter shrapnel into its enclosure in a violent end. (Fortunately, it was in an 8-inch ventilated enclosure separately connected to an external SCSI bus.)

So, you should probably back up. And probably decommission it. There's a couple of people in this thread still running Quantums. I... really would not recommend that. But hey, if you want to, it's your funeral.

Longest? Something like 15-20 years, can't remember, some 40 GB ATA. Still alive to this day, zero issues.
Shortest? My current 465 GB SATA, 6-7 years. Still alive to this day, zero issues.

Never had a drive die on me, and only once I had a "MBR loading error", but a reboot fixed it and it never happened again.

I never do backups. In my experience the drives just don't die.
>>
For the first time ever I've had a hard drive crash, my Seagate (lol) 1tb drive just up and shit itself an hour ago. It just abruptly died

3 years. It never clicked or acted up or did anything suspicious

Bought the enclosure, connected the drive, this is what I've got. Does this look okay? Ideally I want one or another two years out of this thing.

I also wanted to ask, if this dies in the near future, is it better that I replace the whole thing with a new external drive, or keep the enclosure and buy a desktop drive? Is there any chance desktop drives last longer than portable ones?

The thing at the left is a notification it gave me when I plugged it in, saying it had errors, but it was then repaired by Windows, and works fine now (passing 150GB from it, at 33mb, pretty good I think).

Maxtor HD 5.25" IDE 6 GB, it has the same size as a DVD drive. Still works, I use it to softmod classic Xboxes. A true warrior, loudly and slow as fuck but reliable.

I have a quantum fireball lc08 that still runs (1999? Ish) and has a licensed copy win98-2e on it, but the oldest active is a Seagate barracuda 320 gb ide, bought in 06. The Seagate is strange paired with an OCZ Agility III.

I still have working 800MB IDE drives.

Only drive that failed did so because it was mounted with rubber mounts that got old and dropped the drive. The connector broke off the PCB, internally it might have been fine.

A 100MB IBM SCSI hard drive, from a PC built in May 1991. Still works flawlessly. In an old IBM PS/2 I sometimes boot up for fun/to play old DOS games (because there's nothing like playing classic games on the actual hardware they were built for).

Just threw out a 10GB Maxor IDE HDD from 1997. Heavy use from 1997-2001, occasional use as a backup hard drive from 2001-2005.

Still in use: 250GB Western Digital hard drive from a build in 2007. It's having heat issues though so I think it's on its way out.

>>52928383
Amount of years doesn't say much. At my parents house we have and HDD still working and we got it in 2003. But we barely use it so it hasn't been used for 13 years.... Idk really, but HDD could definitely last for 5 more years or something.
>>
>>52944278
Why? A 32gb usb 3.0 is around 25-30 dollars last I checked. And an external 1tb usb 3.0 hdd is around 75-80.
Knowing him, he'll just get a $20 enclosure and slap in an old 320GB or 250GB HDD he has laying around and call it a day.
He's very conservative with his money. He honestly spends more on me than he does on himself which I don't like 2bh.

Oldest is probably an 80MB SCSI drive pulled from a non-functioning Macintosh LCII, which would put the drive's manufacture at 1992. The drive works but I haven't found a use for it. Holding onto it in case an old Mac needs it.

I also have a 350MB SCSI drive from an original Power Mac (not sure which) that's working now in a Power Mac 6100/66 DOS.

Next up is a 1.2 GB IDE drive from a Macintosh Performa 6300CD made in 1996. Still working, but replaced with a "newer" 40GB drive. (I wanted enough room to install System 7.5 - Mac OS 9.1 for playing around.)
