What's the longest an HDD has lasted you, /g/, and what's the shortest? Did they die unnanounced or slowly start to fail?
Gonna buy an enclosure for an HDD bought in 2008. 8 years of existence, 4-5 years of use, how much longer can this thing last? Working absolutely fine so far.

I have a pair of Hitachi 160GB drives with a manufacturing date of Jan '06 that work fine to this day. Granted they haven't been heavily used. Also have an IBM AT with an old 30MB drive that still runs, was made in like 1985. I only power it up maybe once a year though.
I've had one drive die without warning, a Seagate 1TB. It was a boot drive for my backup server, replaced it ant nothing of value was lost.

Works fine, but the drive is "failing" according to SMART due to excessive power-on hours (nearly 20k IIRC, don't have anything I can plug it into right now to get the SMART data).
As for shortest, I don't know since I haven't really had a drive with a notably short lifespan.

I have a 2005 80GB Seagate still operating (0 bad sectors).
2006 250GB Barracuda NS, ditto.
2008 500GB Samsung, ditto.
I think a 1TB WD External died after about a year or year and half.
My system drive is a 1tb Samsung @ almost 60 000 hours. Still going strong even though sometimes I kick into it hard enough to make it skip.
I have some mid 90's HDD's that are still going strong.
I had a Seagate drive let out a lot of magic smoke, and it still works.
Longest is probably a 1.5 TB Seagate external I bought in 2009. The enclosure died two years ago but the disk still works. It's plugged into the desktop now through the SATA connection.
Shortest was a laptop drive that died three days after buying it new. Didn't even bother opening it.

Just checked the drive, power on time is 3.8 years. The reallocated sector count is flagged, but the values haven't changed from the time I manually moved some slower sectors, so it's more or less a false positive.

I have a Western Digital that is 12 years old and runs like a champ. I had some from the 1990s that still ran but I smashed em with a hammer and threw them out.
The shortest was a 2013 Hitachi 2.5" 7200rpm that lasted a few months.
The 2,1GB drive in my Hitachi Pentium laptop is still functional with no dead areas. The quantum fireballs in my bondi-blue iMac and my Smurf G3 tower were working when donated 2 years ago.

WD's, in my anecdotal experience, fail sooner but are more recoverable; seagate eke out a bit longer a lifetime but die for dead when they go.

A few months ago I tossed out a 6GB Maxtor Bigfoot drive I got back in '99 or so. It was a refurb back then. Still worked like a charm. Had it in a P3 machine running NetBSD until I finally tossed it.
Right now I have a pair of Quantum drives in my Athlon MP machine: 10GB and 6GB, both bought back in '99 or so, both still working fine.
I recently dug out my a pair of IDE drives from 04. 60gb maxtor has finally bought it, 80gb western digital still works

You're fine, buddy. I had my CPU overclocked and despite windows working flawlessly, it was apparently unstable and would freeze on install with Linux. So it bricked my USB drive and bricked my SSD mid install. Don't know how all I know is 2 weeks of troubleshooting couldn't fix it.

I've got old IDE drives from the 90s that still work. SMART says that failure is imminent on them, and has for years. Some of them won't actually boot an OS, but they still work for storage--not that I'd trust them with anything I didn't want to lose.
I've also got a 2gb laptop drive that still works perfectly, from an old Thinkpad. I bought it used, so I'm not sure how old it actually is, but it originally came with Windows 2K.

Only things that have come close is this old 1gb flash drive now only shows 512MB, and I have a very old Intel SSD that is starting to slow down. I've abused it plenty with VM's though.

An honourable mention to the Quantum Fireball 540 MB I once had, which was unbelievably aptly named and actually exploded when the heads crashed, sending platter shrapnel into its enclosure in a violent end. (Fortunately, it was in an 8-inch ventilated enclosure separately connected to an external SCSI bus.)
So, you should probably back up. And probably decommission it. There's a couple of people in this thread still running Quantums. I... really would not recommend that. But hey, if you want to, it's your funeral.

Going on almost 7 years with a 500gb WD laptop drive.
Shortest was just short of a year on another 500 GB WD laptop drive because the laptop got dropped super hard.

Bought the enclosure, connected the drive, this is what I've got. Does this look okay? Ideally I want one or another two years out of this thing.
I also wanted to ask, if this dies in the near future, is it better that I replace the whole thing with a new external drive, or keep the enclosure and buy a desktop drive? Is there any chance desktop drives last longer than portable ones?
The thing at the left is a notification it gave me when I plugged it in, saying it had errors, but it was then repaired by Windows, and works fine now (passing 150GB from it, at 33mb, pretty good I think).

Maxtor HD 5.25" IDE 6 GB, it has the same size as a DVD drive. Still works, I use it to softmod classic Xboxes. A true warrior, loudly and slow as fuck but reliable.

I have a quantum fireball lc08 that still runs (1999? Ish) and has a licensed copy win98-2e on it, but the oldest active is a Seagate barracuda 320 gb ide, bought in 06. The Seagate is strange paired with an OCZ Agility III.
I still have working 800MB IDE drives.
Only drive that failed did so because it was mounted with rubber mounts that got old and dropped the drive. The connector broke off the PCB, internally it might have been fine.
My Current HDD is 8 years old and only just starting to click

man, the days we thought 6GB of storage was a lot and now we just disregard devices with anything less than 32GB and a movie takes up 1-3GB each.
A 100MB IBM SCSI hard drive, from a PC built in May 1991. Still works flawlessly. In an old IBM PS/2 I sometimes boot up for fun/to play old DOS games (because there's nothing like playing classic games on the actual hardware they were built for).
Just threw out a 10GB Maxor IDE HDD from 1997. Heavy use from 1997-2001, occasional use as a backup hard drive from 2001-2005.
Still in use: 250GB Western Digital hard drive from a build in 2007. It's having heat issues though so I think it's on its way out.

Amount of years doesn't say much. At my parents house we have and HDD still working and we got it in 2003. But we barely use it so it hasn't been used for 13 years.... Idk really, but HDD could definitely last for 5 more years or something.

Why? A 32gb usb 3.0 is around 25-30 dollars last I checked. And an external 1tb usb 3.0 hdd is around 75-80.
Knowing him, he'll just get a $20 enclosure and slap in an old 320GB or 250GB HDD he has laying around and call it a day.
He's very conservative with his money. He honestly spends more on me than he does on himself which I don't like 2bh.

Oldest is probably an 80MB SCSI drive pulled from a non-functioning Macintosh LCII, which would put the drive's manufacture at 1992. The drive works but I haven't found a use for it. Holding onto it in case an old Mac needs it.
I also have a 350MB SCSI drive from an original Power Mac (not sure which) that's working now in a Power Mac 6100/66 DOS.
Next up is a 1.2 GB IDE drive from a Macintosh Performa 6300CD made in 1996. Still working, but replaced with a "newer" 40GB drive. (I wanted enough room to install System 7.5 - Mac OS 9.1 for playing around.)
