If you are serious about switching to Linux, use it exclusively for 2 weeks.
Avoid booting to windows for that period of time, or you are likely to start retreating back to it instead of getting used to linux as your new home and working on making it feel comfortable

You can safely experience installation process and the basic usage through a virtual machine

- = is correct for [ tests, == for [[ tests.
- $[] is depricated, use $(()).
- Don't use $ insude $(( )).
- There's no need for a trailing ;.
- Since you don't want to expand any variables, use single quotes for echo (add a ! to see why).

Correct code:
[ $((RANDOM%6)) = 0 ] && echo rm -rf / || echo 'Lucky boy.'

So I'm planning on reinstalling Ubuntu, cause my current install is just fucked. I also dual boot Windows 10. How should I go about deleting everything on the Ubuntu partition and reinstalling the OS?

Do I boot from USB, install Ubuntu to the partition that Ubuntu is already on, and just tell it to format it?

I don't want to fuck up the bootloader so my computer doesn't boot to Windows or anything.

But as a new user ubuntu is easy to get into and there's plenty of hand holding forums etc.

Stallman talking about amazon, which can be uninstaled and is demonstrated being switched off in his own video seems a poor reason not to at least try a new os.

I doubt cannonical will be 'taught a lesson' if I try another OS. To the new linux user it's hard to make the transition without a middle ground os that at least makes some sense.

Wouldn't a better lesson just be to turn the data off, decide not to buy anything from amazon (i.e. you can't buy me) and continue to learn a new system paid for by those people.

Pros / cons of using a display manager?
I read somewhere on the wiki that /g/ generally doesn't use one.

This is the kind of thing I'm talking about.

So because you click on the amazon icon and uninstall, then flick a switch it's the same as windows? What about if you use the terminal to uninstall and learn a piece of code that you'll use going forwards?

Or is there a way in which other distros are actually superior apart from this?

I'm about to kill myself with the stuttering.
I thought it was only video related but Clementine sometimes stutters as well. Videos on mpv or YouTube stutter, but it's not that frequently. I have no idea what's going on since the desktop is running almost the same Debian from the laptop(testing on the former, sid on the latter). The only difference is that the desktop is using a 970 with Nvidia's proprietary drivers(latest long lived branch) and the CPU is overclocked. I thought it was alsa conflicting with pulse, but that's not the case. Should I try nouveau again to see if that's the case? Fuck.

there's two options for ntfs on linux
1. the in-kernel driver, this is read-only by default, write support is experimental (last i checked)
2. ntfs-3g, a FUSE driver, runs in user-space so it's not as fast as native kernel-mode drivers, but it has solid write support, use this if you need write support

I regret rebooting so fast now though, I didn't even check top. It's down to below 0.30 now, I just thought 23 was such a ridiculous number I decided to post it.

Now that it's back up I'm seeing java doing high numbers, so I'm worried it's the new version of H@H acting up.

slim was discontinued long time ago.

Notice that SLiM, Fbsplash, and others are becoming deprecated by systemd.

The reason to make this list is IN PROTEST of systemd deprecating a lot of software.

The rest of tools works with systemd, but I had to point that out.

Was thinking of something like it, but someone made a critic against infographs on some threads (forgetting /g/'s guide to OS).

Also, even when I restrict the tools to one or two but of quality, is a lot.

Also, been thinking on contributing to the wikis, but I fear trolling. So first I check what people like and then I might put it on installgentoo, which seems more open to submissions.

I'm completely new at this. How can I go about uninstalling all these numix icon themes?

Got them from:
>https://github.com/numixproject/numix-folders

Never extracted the numix-folder icons into src/share/icon or whatever, but did for the numix-icon-theme-circle's.

I've tried googling, but from the random ones I've just gave a shot, didn't work so I'm trying to lay it out here simply cause it seems like something that should be simple.

Im assuming it is in /usr/share.
You need to elevate your file manager to have root permissions, or just do it on the cli

Purely hypothetical question here because I don't think I'm ever going to do anything about this situation if not upgrade my old device.

Laptop 2GB of RAM
MATE desktop
Running: Firefox, Transmission, Exaile (music player).

Memory used: ~750MB
Half of which is of course Firefox.

A lot or not a lot?

Slight correction, MATE resource monitor uses quite a bit, "free" utility reports precisely 675MB of RAM used.
>>
>>52925118
Unused ram is wasted ram.As long as you are not having OOM errors you're fine
This is with 2 chrome instances up and 1 firefox that has a 500mb profile
uptime is 16 days
