Every laptop is a piece of shit except business ones such as ThinkPads, Elitebooks, Latitudes, etc..., macbooks and maybe chromebooks.
>>
>>52909151
What is an opinion?

I have a thinkpad and a last gen XPS. The thinkpad is a gem because it still runs since 2007, I'll never let it die. My XPS was shat on by Dell when they decided to stop supporting drivers for a perfectly fine laptop when Win10 came out. It still runs thank goodness. I just cleaned the dust out and it runs like a champ now.

eBay.

My probem is that I have a shitty experience with buying electronics online, expecially things that run on an O.S.

The last thing I bought on ebay was a screen for my thinkpad and it actually was in better condition than the seller said. I'm just really skeptical about buying something so sensitive like a computer from ebay.

I rather save up for the mbp for $1k without retina display. I really don't need a third computer anyways.... fuck I'm difficult. Sorry anon.
>>
>>52911217
There's a lot of buyer protection though, especially with PayPal. I've bought tons of stuff off eBay like my nephew's 3ds, my ps4 and my moms iPad. Just check seller reviews and see how long they've been around if you do end up buying on eBay.

If you want to save and buy one new elsewhere, that's fine too. I want a Mac, but I don't want to pay $1400 for a brand new one when I can get a refurbished previous year for $800.
>>
>>52911637
Makes sense. Will take that into consideration. I was thinking of building a desktop this spring, maybe I will get a Mac instead.

Thoughts on this? I play Dota, Path of Exile and sometimes Dark Souls 2. I mainly want a new laptop that can run those at 1080 and medium spec without dropping from 60 fps and is able to run 3ds Max and Zbrush just fine. For $800 this seems pretty damn legit.

I'm currently with a Dell Inspiron 15 5548.

The bundled SSHD heats up a lot when in normal use, and just does so on idle on Linux. I got a 850 evo on the mail, though, so hopefully that'll solve things.

Most laptops I found around here in stores looked like shit, so I went with one similar to my aunt's. Kinda sad it doesn't have a matte finish screen like my old ATIV Book 6, but going from 1366x768 to 1080p is a nice change.

No TVs at the moment, so I can use the laptop for animu. Screen's pretty glossy, that's all.

I recently acquired a hp probook 6407b, after comparing the alledged retail price with the asking price I had no choice in the matter, it was a steal.

Considering I was running on a fucking single core celeron advent machine beforehand this is a serious upgrade.
I particuarly like how I can pop the back off without having to remove a single screw, I needed to clean the vent out anyway because fucking hell that was a fire hazard.
I'm using it now and it's doing a damn good job of not being a complete mess. Will mostly use it for programming.

How's the performance?
>>
>>52927796
Pretty slow for a lot of stuff. On gNewSense you can do plenty of things just fine, but not anything fancy. However gNewSense parkes has kinda old packages on, like Iceweasel 3.5, which is actually kinda cool, because old Firefox was better and all that, but it means most websites nowadays don't work. Unfortunately, Parabola, one of the few other distros which runs on it, dropped support for Lemote very soon after I got mine. Parabola is based on Arch so would have a fair bit of newer stuff, though apparently there's still some limit in browser choice.

OpenBSD has some newer packages, but the best browser that can run is Dillo for whatever reason. Also, the Yeeloong's SiliconMotion graphics isn't supported for anything other than simple software rasterizing on mips64el, so X is almost unbearably slow. I had to get dwm and modify it to not redraw windows when moving or resizing them.

In the market for a new laptop. Only ever owned one laptop and it's 5 yo and showing problems. I don't have a desktop and need a laptop over it anyway.

Under 1000 is optimal. I basically just searched "best laptops 2016" and every site has completely different lists.

Where should I start?

These are cute, but don't they take like 10 minutes to boot up Debian and shit?
>>
>>52928228
I wouldn't say they're particularly slow to boot up, unless you have some massive DE. I've never felt "Argh this is taking ages" any more than when booting up my ThinkPad.

Can I get some tips on looking for a laptop? I mean I see reviews that say thinkpads are good (thought it was a /g/ meme) but I would like to have options and make sure it suits my needs

>get a thinkpad netbook
>pretty nice, really light and thin, the processor is kind of shitty though and can't replace it
>buy another with a better processor
>instant post-purchase regret

What should I do with the other one now?

I just wish these things had the specs of gaymer laptops.
I want muh grafix. Well in reality I just want to be able to run everything since I basically just use these things in college as a desktop replacement.
And these things look like they're built well and durable enough to handle them.

Shit sucks. But hey, the state of gaming laptops is actually looking better. No seriously. They're getting more minimalistic while the build quality is looking better and better.
Also, the price to performance ratio is steadily increasing. They actually *are* becoming viable machines to replace desktop workloads.

But I do anon.
I do.

980 ti actually with all my current storage on an SSD

Laptops are impressive desu family. I don't care about workstation type tasks or even massive graphical rendering but I imagine they run fine as well since things like AutoCAD, Revit, etc run without a hiccup.

Mobile GPUs(and CPUs for that matter) are not bad man.
