Why is Gnome more popular than KDE?
>>
>>52906405
ubuntu had this orange/brown theme when it first came out, and a lot of people liked it.
Stupid people stuck with ubuntu, and became gnome fanboys over time.
Gnome was almost dead before ubuntu came along.
Just one more reason to hate ubuntu.
>>
>>52906405
Kde is garbage, slow, and looks bad. If you're gonna waste time ricing why not just go with xfce

Just like with pretty much everything else in the world, the shitty stuff is popular while the good stuff is obscure.
>>
>>52906559
Case in point.
>>
>>52906405
Possibly babby duck syndrome.

KDE and its foundational technologies are superior to GNOME and GTK. It's prettier and easier to use, but crashes occasionally on my Macbook with integrated graphics. No problems to report on my desktop with an i3 and GTX960.

>>52906512
It's not 2009 anymore.

There was some problems with the way Qt was licensed many years ago, for starter.

That lead Debian, RH and many other distros to focus on Gnome.

Also Gnome 2 was really good and considerably better than KDE 3 and early KDE4 and GTK is pretty much the standard toolkit.

gnome 2 was decent in an era where kde was very bloated, sluggish, and visually busy, while most people who wanted a kde-like experience used xfce

kde never got better, xfce is old, and no one seems to care that gnome removes features while making config harder

I recently tried kde5 (plasma or whatever they call it) and it still looks like garbage. It looks like a product of a riced desktop from a 12 year old with all the stupid effects.

First it was brown, then it became orange. Now it's more purplish.
>Stupid people stuck with ubuntu, and became gnome fanboys over time.
People weren't stupid. Ubuntu was and is still great for people that need more up to date features, with a hand holding OS. It's a good stepping stone towards more serious and stable OSs.
>Gnome was almost dead before ubuntu came along.
That's not true. A lot of distributions shipped GNOME by default (Debian, Fedora, Red Hat). Others just shipped KDE. Life was simpler with just two main DE choices back then.
>Just one more reason to hate ubuntu.
We owe a lot to Ubuntu. It enabled more people to get onto the open source community. The learning curve proved to be a little too big, hence Ubuntu's success.

Wait, is it? I thought I was the only person in existance that actually likes Gnome 3.

In my case I tried KDE twice and on both occasions I didn't like it. In the 3.x days the default theme (Keramik I believe it was called) repulsed me so much I dropped KDE altogether. Some time later I tried it again (It was 4.x I think...) and got infuriated with the application launch menu that was a weird mix of mouse-over tabs and sliding panes.

On the other side Gnome 3 when it came out pretty much duplicated what I was doing with Gnome 2 and compiz anyway.

GTK stands for GIMP Toolkit
GIMP stands for GNU image manipulation program
GNU stands for GNU's not UNIX

So GTK stands for GNU's not UNIX image manipulation program toolkit

Is UNIX or GNOME an acronym for something?

KDE doesn't look as good and is far less polished than the average gnome application.

Its overloaded with useless stuff so you don't tend to find the things you actually need. It feels like a worse version of the Windows paradigm basically and I already don't like Windows.

>GTK stands for GIMP Toolkit
It's GTK+, which was formerly called GIMP Toolkit, with GTk as its acronym: https://web.archive.org/web/19990417052141/http://www.linuxworld.com/linuxworld/lw-1999-01/lw-01-gimp.html
Nowadays it's just GTK+.

>GIMP stands for GNU image manipulation program
It's GNU Image Manipulation Program. Or in short, GIMP.

>GNU stands for GNU's not UNIX
>So GTK stands for GNU's not UNIX image manipulation program toolkit
GNU is a recursive acronym for "GNU's Not Unix". Remember that UNIX® is the registered trademark, hold by The Open Group: http://www.unix.org/what_is_unix.html
>As the owner of the UNIX trademark, The Open Group has separated the UNIX trademark from any actual code stream itself, thus allowing multiple implementations.

When referring to the operating system, please just write 'Unix'. When referring to the trademark, please follow these guidelines: http://www.opengroup.org/content/legal-trademark-guidelines

>Is UNIX or GNOME an acronym for something?
GNOME used to be an acronym for GNU Network Object Model Environment. Now GNOME just stands for GNOME: https://mail.gnome.org/archives/marketing-list/2010-April/msg00050.html
>>
>>52916721

Lol, I have the same laptop, non s version though. I personally thought that xfce didn't feel very polished. I tried some distro with it, and it just wasn't very good.

It was buggy, hibernate/suspend didn't work, getting qt and gtk applications to look the same was even more of a nightmare than on kde, and it wasn't even that lightweight feeling. kde takes a while to boot, but after that there was no difference in performance. I also don't like all the super outdated stuff that xfce comes with: fucking xscreensaver, dated garbage that looks awful, terrible session manager, default software sucks, you need to install alternatives etc. etc.
