Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>They’re really cheap when you buy a used one.
>Keyboards feel excellent while typing (yes, even the newer ones).
>Great durability thanks to the inclusion of rollcages and use of glass fiber reinforced plastic for the chassis. The keyboard is splash proof and spilled liquids will drain out.
>Utilitarian design - e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking solutions that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for almost every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing on the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Battery tiers:
>FREE BATTERY IF ELIGIBLE - https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/hf004122

>New geunine lenovo - most expensive but more durable and dependable compared to the chinese counterparts. If money is no object, buy new.

>Used/refurbished genuine Lenovo - on a budget, these have all the benefits of new batteries, just with some wear. Only buy used batteries from sellers that will screencap battery stats so you know what you're getting. Usually price is on-par with high quality third party batteries.

>High quality 3rd party battery - anker & denaq both use jap/korean 18650 cells and are thus known to wear well. Worth considering at this price point. Some models (XX30 and up) will not charge 3rd party batteries, so avoid outright.

>New chinese batteries - reviews are mixed but most use sub-par cells and electronics. They may die unexpectedly or wear much faster than genuine lenovo batteries. Others seem to work fine. There are a million brands and batches out there, so there's no way to tell which is better than another, if they are.

>used chinese or unknown capacity used lenovo - reconsider your life choices that led you to this destitute position

>>
>>52904599
So apparently the fhd mod works better with the T420s vs the T420. Since I'm not sure if I'll immediately hate the stock 900p I was going it some time before upgrading. But, are the physical features of the T420 a large enough improvement over the T420s to warrant getting the T420 first regardless and dealing with the headache of upgrading the panel later?

I still think 1600x900 is ideal for 100% dpi at 14 inches but colour accuracy and range are also important. I would get the X1 TN 900p panel but it'll cost me $200 CAD for the panel, not to mention the cables. Somehow the 1080p T440s panel is cheaper here.
>>
>>52905423
No, no one could.
My machines have been X61T SXGA+ or W700ds WUXGA.

Enthusiasts have complained about Lenovo hindering screen options.
2001 had the A22p, a UXGA 15" machine, the A30p had started the IPS display.
T23 had a SXGA+ optional screen, as well as a T30 can be fitted to one also.

T40p has had IPS SXGA+ and UXGA options, up until the T60p. T61 we lost the 4:3 display, Z61p had still had WUXGA screens, but when it came to 14" widescreen machines, nothing better than WXGA+ was available, pitiful as WSXGA+ is beautiful to see.

Although I did have a 4K screen on my X1C3 when I had it, it was a bit too hard core to be honest. FHD on the T430s is pretty good, I think 2K will be the sweet spot on this, as the 3:2 Pixel was almost perfect for me.

>>52905639
I haven't had a T420s but had T420, T430, T430s and the non 's' models are pretty damn strong compared to the slim units.
X1C is too flimsy to me, though I'd say the X300 feels much more durable than the 's' models, but thats because its an X series.
>>
>>52905700
>strong compared to the slim units
So did I unknowingly fuck up with the T450s? I was under the impression that it was the exact same thing as the T450 with a different lid.
>>
>>52905487
I was talking about the faggots that use one with 768p, which is obviously you since you reacted with such butthurt and wrote that reply before even fully reading the statement because tears were blinding your vision.

Nigger.
>>
>>52905639
The only bad things I've heard about the T420s compared to non-s is that it has worse battery life and the battery cells are harder to replace since they use the skinny square kind.

Nah, trust me, its a lot better than the X1C.
I havent had a T/X series since the haslel chips so I cannot comment how they actually feel to other units
>not as badass as a 14" T60 or R61

The frame is a bit thinner, battery is a different design (I think) and are placed elsewhere on the bottom than behind like all other units and probably has less cooling performance than the regular model.

IMO the base models are pretty shitty spec, either get 's' or 'p' variants.

T430s plays League pretty well under linux. :)

>>
>>52905854
I'm actually pretty sure that the t450 has the same battery design as the S . And it may even have the same bottom chassis.

This is why I don't think the t460_no_s will suddenly have a removable battery, if they even bother releasing it.
>>
>>52905933
Eh if not the screens aren't that expensive to track down, oh and the LCD cable too for it :x

If that T61p isn't dated 8/08 or later, avoid. It's right on the cusp of "modern" usefulness but still could be an everyday beater if you don't mind the lack of battery life.

x61s's processor is a bit slow. Unless your needs are modest, I'd avoid. You'll probably need more RAM. Literally who cares about the OS, surely you'll pirate or install Linux, right?

T420 is way too expensive.

this is a replacement battery i bought, the one that was sold with the computer had a reported "design capacity" of ~5200 mAh but wouldn't charge past ~1500. however, almost all battery status monitors just take whatever the last full capacity was to be "100%" so you never actually how much power you have unless you make your own battery monitoring script that reports capacity and rate in absolute units instead of relative percentages.

Thanks. Do you mean that in the output you posted, the last full capacity may not have actually been to 62390 mWh if that battery was worn? Because it would be sweet to just calculate what the full capacity should be for the batteries and check the last full capacity in person.

>>
>>52911906
I'm not going to wish you luck because that really doesn't require it. Have fun, though.
>>
>>52911790
The design capacity is what in theory the capacity should be on a brand new battery. The last full capacity is what the capacity was the last time that the battery reported itself "full", which usually is less than the design capacity. I have noticed that within the first year, maximum charge drops by 5-10%. If it's an old computer that has been used a lot, chances are the battery is completely shot. You can generally trust the value. Alternatively, charge it until it won't charge anymore and look at the "remaining capacity" value in state.

I have used absolute unit battery monitoring on three laptops now, 5 batteries total. It is great because not only do you see exactly how much charge the battery has, you also see exactly how much you're using and how things like backlight, usb, wifi, and frequency throttling affect your power consumption. I've run my X200 on under 10 W on a 12 hour flight just reading ebooks, listening to music, and playing adom.

If you don't have a /proc/acpi/battery (often the case on "newer", "edgy" distros), you can find most of the same info under /sys but the path is going to be long and convoluted (on my system, it's /sys/bus/acpi/drivers/battery/PNP0C0A:00/power_supply/BAT0/).
>>
>>52912141
I see, thank you. Also, the ultrabay battery will probably be BAT1 right? Though I guess it should return both of them if I don't specify. I'll be live booting Debian which I think will have it under /sys/class/power_supply/

Try an old-ish version of Slax (Slackware-based), or Porteus (newish successor). Slackware is great about keeping old and useful things around after all the kiddie distros throw them away.

/proc/acpi returns values that are easier to read if you cat them but /sys returns raw numbers which are easier to use in scripts and such.
>>
>>52912273
BAT0 and BAT1 (if you have a BAT1) will be separate directories, each with their own info and state.
If you enjoy this kind of tinkering, you should dig around in /proc/acpi (or /sys/class) because you can find all sorts of fun hardware monitor things there

Repaste, I did the same on my x230. Worked miracles for me, laptop suddenly ran 20c cooler and the fan actually turns off in low power mode.

I might get a T61 for free after a company my friend used to work for threw away a bunch of them. I don't have a laptop for school currently, how well would it fit for that? Does Ubuntu run fine or do I have to install something lighter?

I have been thinking alot about replacing my x200s WXGA+ with a newer model since the CPU isnt really that great for programming and surfing with lots of tabs any more.

I also want to play some games while visiting my parents or travelling so it will probably come down to a **30-series.

The x230 would be the perfect solution if it werent for the low resolution screen so I am leaning towards the t430 with 900p and (in future) the option for FHD. However I am that guy that ALWAYS has a laptop around (I need a keyboard, I hate smartphones and tablets), be it in university, travelling for more than a day or just being outside for a longer period of time. A lot of times I will move with my laptop in my hand, give it to other people or use it in crowded/ small spaces (in most lectures I can barely fit my x200s and an A4 paper on the table).

The x240 is no option either seeing that it is nearly double the cost of the **30-series here and I dont like the overall design and the issues coming with it.
>>
Help a newfag out /g/.

I've always just bought the cheapest laptop, but now my business has taken off, I want a solid laptop with good specs(enough to play low tier games and 1080p videos).

Is a thinkpad for me? I remember using one at work ages ago and it seemed like a good deal.
>>

Personally I don't find the resolution so bad, especially for its size and portability. You could also go with a t430s to slim it down a little tho

I've just received the T420 that I've ordered for my stepmother, /tpg/. It came with the basic specs:
>i5-2520M, 2.5 GHz
>4GB RAM
>768p screen

-The machine is in excellent condition (no scratches or anything, you can see on the top that it has been used but only by little), refurbished by a professional company
-has my language's keyboard, and is brand new (it was an absolute requirement),
-and has a brand new battery.

I've bought it with a 120GB SSD drive (Kingston SSDNow V300) instead of the HDD. The DVD drive is required, since she often uses her dvds and cds.

The machine cost 300$ (27% tax included). Did I do good /tpg/? Before judging me, let me tell you that it's rare to have a machine like this in country which has my native language's keyboard, and has a brand new battery. Btw I know the screen is shit, but it's good enough for work / browsing the web / watching some YT videos imo.

The advantage refurbished has in holland (no idea elsewhere) is that you have 6 months warranty and a spotless thinkpad. Considering you generally pay 5% more compared to 2nd hand dodgy condition from Marktplaats (dutch ebay) it is definitely worth it.

Knowledge like this is why foreigners should announce themselves when asking about prices (if they do at all, which they shouldn't - do your own research). It varies greatly from place to place.

Yeah. My first Thinkpad was a T410 that I bought from QX systems in holland. Was barely 20 euros more than a worse condition one on marktplaats. It was literally in mint condition, even the keyboard keys weren't shiny (probably a new keyboard).

It's not always worth it though, for some reason the x200s and x230 are really expensive from most dutch refurbishes.

I bought my x230 from tweakers.net though since it has seller rating that is actually good.

If you really really really don't care for performance, battery life, weight or wish to use programs past 2010, get an IBM machine.

IBM ThinkPads have had their problems.
The T4x flex issues, A3x GPU problems, T23/T30 RAM holder issues, T2x Blink of Death, any Acer made iSeries or R3x/R4x machine, they've all had their problems from IBM.

Lenovo has had their problems too, namely the T61 GPU issue (Lenovo controlled support centers denied replacement, and after months they replaced just shit refurbs with the same issues. IBM maintained support found out the problem and had no questions asked returns for the most part with new GPU process and had offered mobo replacements for machines that didn't even have the issues)

Afaik the big QC/Long term problems from Lenovo:
>bad hinge design on SL500, T/W500

Or is it just a circlejerk? Personally I'm just glad they got rid of the horrible touch buttons on the trackpoint

it's the same quality laptop you'd find at best buys

What's a good price for a t430 with nvidia 5400m?

am I the only one who dislikes covering a thinkpad with carbon fiber?

they're splash resistant, not splash proof. Note the difference between the two terms. It's the reason why lelnovo hasn't been sued.

Yes. Thread is here if you want to read it:

how bad are fingerprints on that?
>>
Does anyone use their thinkpad's fingerprint reader? Does it work well in GNU/Linux?
>>
>>52927372
Bump. Do drivers work? etc etc
>>
>>52929001
tried it a bit, but always had trouble signing on and doing sudo with it, so i just disabled it.

might be my sanded off fingerprints, grease, or any other thing that caused that. eh

Everything works well, some driver needs to be installed in compatibility more.
>>
>>52928805
Wouldn't know, haven't done it yet, but thinking of trying it with a spare T60 with a shitty lid.

>>52929001
Works good in linux. Install frpintd and run fprintd-enroll.

>>52929149
W10 ran great on my T601F briefly when I was using it for my test machine. I can't think of any reason why it wouldn't run on a T420.
>>
>>52929001
I use it on my X200. Works out of the box on Fedora at least. Gnome has login settings for it.
>>
>>52928206
Have you seen the kind of shit that they're selling at Best Buy? The E series is like the poster child for durability in comparison.

>>52920600
Hardly statistical sampling, but my T42 doesn't have a single issue with it despite being horribly abused the first 6 or so years of its life, the hinges on my T400 are rock-solid after 6 1/2 years, and my W520 runs cool as a cucumber (with a repaste). I agree that the speaker design is fucking defective though, shorts out way too easily. Even after my electrical tape fix, there are still issues (occasional popping, low volume, etc). Still, point taken, IBM wasn't perfect and we should stop pretending that they were. Lenovo is merely carrying on their legacy.

Let me ride through the wide open libre bios and distros that I love

Let me be by myself in the comfy breeze
And listen to the murmur of the heatsink fan, please
Turn iThings and richpads off forever but i tell you guise

Just turn me loose, let me twiddle my old nipple
Underneath the LEDs
On my case, let me wander over yonder
Till I see the stickers rise

I want to ride to the threads where thinkpad love commences
And gaze at all the posts until I lose my senses
And I can't look at macs 'cause I don't suck the benis

I got my T400 for 50 pounds 1 year ago and I love it, doing work on it is so comfy although all the mac fags bully me at codebar. How long is the battery life for a brand new battery for a t400? If it's a large improvement I might buy one.

YouTube is a lot more CPU intensive then it used to be. 60 fps VP9 is not hardware accelerated and uses about 75% cpu on my X230. There's a browser extension to force h. 264 instead which helps with the heat.

When I first got mine, I was able to get a good 6-7 hours from the 6-cell battery. Pretty underwhelming by today's standards, but excellent in 2009.

I'm trying to decide between a TP Yoga 14 and a T450s, at the moment. Is there much of a difference, because the 450s runs more expensive.

6 hours is much better than 2, thanks

I'm just saying the common problems, I don't mean to shill for Lenovo but it is not to say none of the IBM era machines had no problems. Thats the issue I had with /g/ boasting about them.

I foudn the Dolby drivers much better than the realtek ones for the W520, much greater improvement.

>>52930474
Yoga are tablet/convertables, T450s isn't but has an arguably stronger chassis.
>>
As the touchscreens on the x series tablets any good? Was thinking about getting the x220 tablet to dick around with drawing shit.
