Overrated software.
Why is this program hyped to hell and back?
Despite all the bloat it comes with, it's completely worthless without third party addons.
It's said to be super customizable but the vanilla options are all pretty bad and to get it to an acceptable state you have to spend a ton of time changing every little thing around, and use yet even more third party addons.
In the end it doesn't play music any better than any other media player except maybe WMP. But that doesn't count.
Post other overrated software.
Also all the decent plugins are for outdated versions of foobar

MusicBee is so much better.
i like it because it's extremely minimal and polished and fast, even with enormous music collections
plus if there's some obscure music related thing you want to do usually foobar is the first to get a plugin for it

Actually installed foobar today. After about an hour trying to figure out how to install a theme because what you get when you first open it up is horrible I went on too spend another hour learning how to customize it.
In the end I installed musicbee. Mfw it looked almost exactly like what I had just spent hours trying to setup in foobar. Will be uninstalling foobar.
I get the appeal of foobar, but it's straight up ricer porn.

I switched to Winyl a few months ago. Like other anons already pointed out, you have to install too much shit to customize foobar2000's appearance and layout, and half the most commonly used plugins are severely outdated. Some even present compatibility issues.
Winyl's layout is much more accessible to boot, but you don't have any plugin support like you do with fb2k. It already supports all the common lossy and lossless formats out of the box, so I don't mind not being able to add additional format support.
As for bloat, Winyl uses less memory than fb2k. Then again, it's just an audio player, not also a mass encoding tool, CD authoring suite, etc. like fb2k wants to be.

Once upon a time I invested a bit into how I should organize my music collection. Classical, Jazz, Rock, Metal, and Soundtracks.
My only option at that time was foobar because:
1) Multi-tag supported filter-based playlists (filter manually configurable)
2) Ratings (plus global hotkey for fast rating outside foobar)
3) Extensive search functions
4) Wavebar
5) ???
6) Playlists
Good looking interface is a plus. Wouldn't care even if it looked like Win95.
I didn't find any other program that could fulfill my needs. This is why I still use windows. Literally the only program I need, else I would have switched completely to linux otherwise.
tl;dr I think foobar deserves the hype.
