I just upgraded to an i5 6600k because it came with a free mobo.

I just upgraded to an i5 6600k because it came with a free mobo. Now I want to upgrade my monitor and 7850. Only going for 1080p. Is it still worth buying a r9 390 or should I play the waiting game for pascal and polaris? I found a msi model for $270.
>>
>>52890877
$270's a good price for a 390. Make your own decision on whether you wait or not.
>>
>>52890877
Why not just spend the money on a 980 ti? It's not like you'll be buying paschal or polaris the day the release. Why would you, anyways? Let them work the bugs out of that shit first.
>>
>>52890946
I was hoping to keep it under $300. Budget of 5-6 hundred for gpu and monitor.
>>
>>52890946
>980Ti
>for only 1080p
>>
>>52890946
Yes, and pick up a G-Sync monitor too. Be a good goy, Nvidia is the best!
>>
>>52890979
The 980 TI, other than the Titan X, is going to be one of the few cards that actually retains some value. Idk anon, you can get some money back for your paschal/polaris in the future.
>>
why wait for new shit if you just want 1080? 390 is more than enough for that
>>
Don't bother with the 980ti. It's tricky to buy right now, but if you're not gonna wait for next gen then ya, 390 is good.
>>
>>52891029
The 980 Ti isn't retaining much value once Nvidia finish gimping it like they did the 780 Ti. Neither will the Titan X for that matter. The original Titan only retained its value because it's a compute monster. The Titan X doesn't even have that.
>>
>>52891050
I'm a poorfag. Don't upgrade very often. The 6600k replaced a 955 phenom. Want the best bang for my buck.

I'm an AMDrone, but goddamn when will this meme end? It takes like 2 minutes on google to find why that's just not true.
>>
>>52890877
If you need it now I would jump on that 390 for 270$ but I'm waiting for Polaris to upgrade personally

The Fury X was already better than the GTX 980 Ti when it was released.

Have the same set-up. 6600k and R9 390 (Asus Strix). Dude if 1080p is "all" you're going for then you'll be fine for the next few years with a 390. If in a few years you thinks you need more perfomance, get another 390 and use them together.

at 1080p, with no plans to upgrade, get either the 390 or 970. the cheaper the better. they're basically the same at 1080p and by the time games are always using 3.5 + GB of vram you will most likely have enough money to upgrade. you can always go used as an option as well.

980Ti (28nm shit tier computer Maxwell) is going to be BTFO by a 14nm mid range Pascal card or even Polaris.

Wouldn't surprise me that a x60 Pascal card competes with a 980ti.

Isn't the 3.5GB becoming an issue now? I believe nvidia themselves have warned of stuttering on the 970 in Rise of the Tomb Raider.

Holy fuck. I don't follow gaming much, I'm surprised to see games actually recommending hardware that powerful.

From the steam page, a 980Ti is for 1440p, which is reasonable. A 970 is recommended for 1080p, and reports say that very high settings are demanding around 4GB of VRAM.

get a 390x
>>
>>52892202
Why you do this? My decision is already killing me.
>>
>>52890946
i actually recommend this too

from all the rumors it appears the 980 ti will either be the next "$300 or $450" card so at least with it, now, you can get pascal performances before its released.

if not, then yeah the 390 is a good card. i personally prefer nvidia but 970 or 390 you can't go wrong. they're neck to neck so it doesn't matter and go with whatever you prefer.
>>
pascal isn't coming out till 2nd half of 2016 so you still have awhile wait if you want to wait.

all these people saying to wait for pascal have been the same people saying wait for the 980 ti instead of buying the 970 / 980 only then to turn around and start saying to wait for pascal after the release of the 980 ti in june 2015.

don't join the waiting game because its never a good time to upgrade according to these people.

unless its a month or two away, its not worth waiting.

Any chance of a significant price drop on the 390/390x or 980/980ti after pascal? And is it q2 or h2, I've heard both. And how about Polaris?
>>
>>52890877
Same boat here, upgrading from a Phenom II X3 (yep, people bought those in 2009/2010) and a 6850.

I'll likely be grabbing a 2560x1440 monitor for this new computer in the coming months, so what are my options for a video card? It seems like there's very little in between the 390x and the 980ti that's worth considering, and that $150 price gap is pretty significant. I'd really rather support AMD if possible, how's the 390x do in 1440p? Is it worth the extra cash over a 290x?
>>
My brother said he'd give me $160 for a computer from my scrap pile. With a 955 and 7850 I think that's a pretty sweet deal for him. No ssd though. Asked him for half the price of a used ps4. He needed it because his gaming laptop (ocymoron) shit out.

So if I buy this stuff sooner, probably for the better in a sense. Found 16gb of 2400 ddr for $66. So might just cinch this shit. But if pascal and Polaris are gonna be that fucking great, I just don't know.
>>
>>52893858
>16gb
unnecessary
>>
>>52893872
Meh, it's like 40$ for 8gb. And id rather have chips from the same run that are more compatible and be future proof for cheap a. And i don't upgrade often. I was here when 8gbb was considered a meme.

could anyone rate my budget build, im new to this.
>>
>>52894050
It's ok, I guess. The 380 is probably better than the 960 but with a weaker CPU you cloud see a bit advantage on Nvidia's side
>>
>>52890877
If you can ge a 390 for $270 just do it, you could probably sell it for a decent price when the new gen comes out
>>
>>52894069
you mean like the cpu I picked, or picking a weaker one.

>>
>>52894050
OP here. i3 might be a better choice on sale? Might be worth the extra dub. Take with a grain of salt, I haven't kept tabs on this stuff in a while.
>>
>>52894087
You're fine, the 6300 is the best CPU you can't get for a budget build. What I was tryng to say is that Nvidia's GPUs have a slight advantage regarding CPU usage in games, which mean you'll have better performance with this CPU using a 960 thn with a 380. If you had a i5 or better I'd recommend the 380 for shure

I have a 7850 2G version.

For 1080 you don't need anything more, don't "upgrade" to 1080p.
>>
>>52894633
I have a 2gb 7850, OCed to 1100/1300MHz. It's pushing me into medium for fo4 at 900p and I still get chugging at spots, I doubt witcher 3 is going to be better at 1080p.
>>
>>52894673
There are videos showing just how insignificant the difference between ultra and low settings are on FO4.

I have a milder clock on my 7850 2Gb, and it pins FO4 to 60fps at 1080 on low. So I suggest turning down settings and running it at native resolution.

If your waiting for next gen, juat stick with the Intel+nvidia master race combo and get something cheap like a 950 or 950ti if they have that.
>>
>>52890946
The 980ti is shit. Twice as expensive and 30% stronger.

Get a 4GB R9 380, the rest is fine. Maybe get the EVGA 600b for 10$ more , will be useful if you upgrade later.

Barely any difference at cpu usage.
Get the R9 380 4GB. 15% better and won't get gimped next year.

Here! Got one on the cheap from a friend that upgraded to a Fury X and it's surprisingly still VERY relevant. Only thing missing is Freesync support but I can't complain for the price I paid.

It's the Vapor-X Tri-X model from Sapphire (supposedly the best one) so some day I might try to OC it.
