Fellow macfa/g/s, what are some things I can do to further make my OS X experience slightly more tolerable?

Pic related: It's my desktop. And sure, post yours.

Ditch Chrome, it's a battery-sucking PoS, especially if you use Hangouts for video chats. Under Chrome Hangouts uses VP9 which has no HW acceleration at all and will keep your CPU busy. Under Safari, Hangouts instead uses H.264 which is fully hardware accelerated.

This, Chrome uses something like 30x the battery on my computer compared to Safari. It's also getting worse, not better. It's insane how uninterested Google are in making it more efficient on laptops
>>
>>52877946
it was always proprietary source, but free. After the latest update, it prompts you to either buy a license or wait for the 40 day trial period.

homebrew to manage shit. also sublime text 3 to code, iTerm2 for terminal emulator. I like zsh for shell.
>>
>>52876208
These:
>>52878192

Homebrew to manage your libs and toolchains.
Spacemacs/Emacs+EVIL for editing.

Just live in bash/zsh except for when you're in the browser, slack (if your work forces that upon you), and Emacs.
>>
>>52878263
I actually prefer vim (but you wouldn't know based on the brew list I posted), but I think if one is new to the game they should flip a coin and try both for a week each (start with emacs if the coin lands with heads facing up, start with vim if it lands tails up).

If you go the vim route, I can probably help with vim customizations (like pathogen and sharing my vimrc file), but I'm sure if you go the emacs route someone similarly competent with emacs as I am with vim can give you guidance on that side of things too. So, you know, try both and go with whichever feels right.
>>
>>52876208
>>52878327
Whichever you choose though, make sure to use vim keybindings. ;)

Attention Mac Pro 08' owners. SSD/USB 3.0 your shit. Also, many normal graphic cards work with it (no further than gtx680). You just won't see Apple logo boot screen. You don't need them flashed.

so for everyone talking about how chrome rapes your battery, what alternatives are there that ARENT safari?

safari has no fucking webm support in 2016
>>
>>52879086
that's because webms use the V9 codec, and as mentioned earlier in the thread computers don't come with hardware acceleration for that. the webkit team puts a huge focus on battery life, which means no webms until V9 acceleration is as widespread as h264 acceleration is

just set up a script to play webms in mpv when clicked or something
>>
>>52879141
i would have no problem switching to safari from chrome but the no webm support thing is a big deal breaker for me.

my job and classes give me constant access to outlets so i would never run out of battery anyways
>>
>>52879157
well, you do you I guess

4chins is the only place I ever encounter webms so I just use chrome as a dedicated 4chan browser while I use safari for everything else
>>
>>52879178
yeah i just got this rmbp a few weeks ago and i love everything about it. i always wondered why chrome ALWAYS was "using significant energy"

what osx browser alternatives are there anyways? i installed chrome immediately upon finding out safari had no webm support.
>>
>>52879198
firefox nightly is pretty comfy
>>
>>52879198
It's pretty much the same as it is on any other platform: Chrome and Firefox. Of course there's Opera, Vivaldi, etc but they're just relabeled chrome with all the problems of chrome along with new ones. Firefox works decently but XUL-based stuff has felt stilted and hacky on OS X ever since Mozilla ported SeaMonkey to OS X back in 2002 or so, and that holds true even today.

Safari's really your best bet under OS X.
>>
>>52879227
and there is nothing that gives even like limited support of webms to safari? really dislike having to open vlc or whatever to watch a webm instead of just like hovering over it you know

i mean i prefer safari but i can't see myself using two browsers just to be able to watch webms
>>
>>52879198
Firefucks.

Also Opera. I've used it quite a bit on PC but not on mac. I've heard the performance is much better than chrome even though Opera is somewhat chormium based.

> Pro tip:
Don't install uBlock Origin on Safari, it's an old version and occasionally freezes the whole OS, use Adblock plus instead.

Download this, comment out the lines that load the tray icon, compile, and run on login. Don't feel bad about losing the default three finger gesture - the dictionary lookup is for idiots.

https://github.com/cl3m/MiddleClick

ALFRED, if only so you can unmount drives without clicking on shit. Pirate it with the powerpack if you dare risk the infamous mac malware.

Don't disable SIP entirely or enable it without FS protections. Enable it without FS protections temporarily, then edit rootless.conf and remove or exclude things you would like to edit, use chflags to remove the protected flags on those files/directories (recursively!), and then re-enable it.

Download themeengine for the occasional rice.

Don't fall for iterm shills. Terminal.app actually performs slightly better. You just need to configure it properly.

Homebrew, nigga.

Ditch chrome for firefox for home use and safari for power-pinching

>he's never tried this

Nearly everything for OS X is not just a paid product or paytogettheusefulfeaturesware, but a paid product that gets sponsorships from ad-driven tech blogs, so finding good shit that doesn't ask $10 for a feature linux users get for free is nearly impossible using google. You have to ask on a forum, or find an obscure forum post and hope the program didn't break when apple changed something for no reason, or keep trying until you find that one little keyword that brings up actual results instead of ads that recommend $100 file managers

It's kind of like windows in that respect

>google "how to do X on windows/essential programs for windows"
>receive a comprehensive list of bloated placeboware and spyware
>do the same thing for linux
>receive a list of functional, free programs

Unless, of course, you live in a terminal emulator and never touch the GUI. Then everything is free. Free as in freedom.

Multitouch gesture softwares on Linux can't recognise half touchpads on the market.
