What benefit does this $1000 device have over a $200 Chromebook besides looking incredibly sexy and having a nice screen?
>>
>>52869522
It separates the poorfags from the men.
>>
>>52869522
It lets you use web apps 1% more quickly
>>
>>52869558
>thinks $1000 is a lot money
>thinks wasting money means you're rich

Looks like we found the poorfag.
>>
Build quality, I think. Even though the reviews I've read of the Pixel C are all 'why the fuck doesn't this run Chrome OS, fuck', the build quality on the Pixel range are all absolutely 100% premium-device-tier.
>>
>>52869522
A nice screen alone is worth the $800 difference in price.
>>
>>52869587
If you're not a poorfag buy it.

I'm rich so $1000 is literally nothing to me.
>>
>>52869602
>Even though the reviews I've read of the Pixel C are all 'why the fuck doesn't this run Chrome OS, fuck'
Why the fuck would you want Chrome OS? Android's not great, but it's better than fucking Chrome OS.
>>
>>52869676
>Why the fuck would you want Chrome OS?
Multi-window working, for one. For example: Google Docs side-by-side with a browser window. Chrome OS is also -fantastically- responsive, even on budget hardware.

Mind you doesn't that thing have a fan? Other Chromebooks don't, and they're magnitudes cheaper. Anything that is purely for browsing the web should never have a fan. Maybe I've been traumatized by old HP laptops with jet engine fans and volcanic temps, but if you're going to make a slick sexy machine for snappy web browsing, make it passively cooled. Even apple are doing it with the Core M in the Macbook.
>>
>>52869730
Then install a proper Linux distro. A lightweight distro is just as responsive and ten times as versatile as ChromeOS.

ChromeOS is complete and utter garbage.

And who cares about "budget hardware?" The Pixel C costs $700. Any OS (except OS X) would be perfectly responsive on it.
>>
>>52869843
>Pixel C

You mean Pixel 2

no need to thank me anon-san
>>
>>52869788
>Mind you doesn't that thing have a fan?
Why is that a problem? Are you retarded? It is barely audible and gives you VASTLY better performance.

>Even apple are doing it with the Core M in the Macbook.
Exactly. Insisting on passive cooling means you get a Macbook or a Macbook clone. For $1000, I want something better than a fucking Macbook.
>>
>>52869864
No. The Pixel C is the tablet.
>>
>>52869843
>Then install a proper Linux distro.
...Onto the Pixel C, right? Or is this just a 'other peoples' choices confuse and infuriate me' gut response?
>>
>>52869890
>For $1000, I want something better than a fucking Macbook

Then you wouldn't be buying a Chromebook Pixel 2, would you?

My point was that it's a web browser, it's running fucking Chrome OS, not Windows. It doesn't need an i5/i7, and thus a fan.
>>
>>52869912
I know, and the Pixel C isn't $700, so I assumed you were talking about the Chromebook.
>>
>>52869929
Sorry that the only thing you do is browse Facebook. I use my Pixel to program and having a fast processor with fans is essential for a responsive interface and fast compiling.
>>
>post 'hey this device would be better if it came with the other Google OS installed'
>receive unironic 'INSTALL GENTOO' response
hello /g/, how's your evening going
>>
Higher speed, more ram, better GPU, more diskspace, higher resolution screen.
>>
>>52869890
>For $1000, I want something better than a fucking Macbook

I mean, the Chromebook Pixel is more in the price range of the Macbook Pro, which is more powerful than the Pixel, and uses a less shit OS, so...
>>
>>52869522
This thing reflects the sunlight back into your face when outside, you get tanned more quickly.
>>
>>52869965
>Sorry the only thing you do is browse Facebook

I don't, but that's all Chromebooks are good for.

>I use my Pixel

So the shill reveals himself...
>>
>>52870028
What's your point, anon? What's gotten you all worked up like this.
>>
>>52869676
You put Ubuntu or something on it as soon as you get it
>>
>>52870053
>Projecting this irrationally

Erm, okay, if you say so
>>
>>52870076
>You put Ubuntu or something on it
I chose a ChromeOS machine about six months ago simply because I didn't want to deal with all the shit that comes with a 'proper' OS for something that would just be used for browsing and watching Plex'd TV shows from my bed. I do miss being able to watch stuff while laid on my side, like my old N7 tablet though.
>>
>>52869522
>besides looking incredibly sexy and having a nice screen

Congrats you found the reason.
>>
>>52869558
This, it's googles way of having their OS and product with status simultaneously.
>>
>>52869522
I heard it boots up fast as fuck, but I'm not sure if all Chromebooks do that (Or at least to extent of the Pixel).
>>
>>52869587
>bro it's just $1000, you poor or something?? lmao

>>52869639
>n-no bro, I literally wipe my ass with $100s

This is how I know /g/ is filled with teenagers.
>>
>>52870212
I'm using a Chromebook 2 - Toshiba I think - and it does indeed boot pretty fast. The login screen is the only real block between turning on and getting to doing stuff - unless you've got an Android phone to hand you need to feed it your full Google account password.
>>
I do like them but they're just glorified facebook machines. Not worth the price, unfortunately
>>
>>52870238
$1000 is a reasonable price for a high resolution laptop with good battery life. Similar offerings from Dell/Apple etc cost around that amount. The only deficiency the Pixel has is the limited onboard storage, which might not be an issue for most people.
>>
>>52869522
I have pixel c. I should've bought surfacepro instead. It's not as smooth as you would think for the price. IPad air 2 is much smoother. But I guess it's a software issue.
>>
>>52870278
>The only deficiency the Pixel has is the limited onboard storage
I think most Chromebooks these days come with 100GB Google Drive space, so there's that.

Come to think of it, I'm not sure how the OS handles having a few TB of cloud storage when the onboard storage is like 32GB. Hm.
>>
>>52869676
Google plans on fusing chrome os and android anyway. I really wonder how that'll work out.
>>
>>52869843
>A lightweight distro is just as responsive and ten times as versatile as ChromeOS.

Implying that ChromeOS isn't a lightweight linux distro
>>
nobody is using chromeOS on that thing.
They are getting it because it is cheap and they can throw gnu/linux on it.
Same reason people buy high end computers with windows on it.
>>
>>52869788
>i'd rather have my laptop throttle itself than install a 5 cent part that is inaudible and vastly improves performance and longevity
>>
>>52870379
I'd imagine they'll include an Android emulator/runtime/whatever in the OS, and include a link to the Play Store from the current Chrome extension store.

Same way the Evernote Chrome app works: literally a Chrome wrapper around the Android apk,
>>
Because a $200 laptop does everything anyone could want from a laptop. If you're spending any more than that its because you either don't know any better or you're doing it for the status symbol.

Its like Nike shoes or beats headphones. Plenty of poor people spend every penny they have on these things, but they aren't necessarily any better than the alternative that cost much less. Companies know this and just release a product at every price point even if the higher end ones don't make much sense, people will still buy them.
>>
>>52869522
You get modern Linux machine with the build quality of a 2009 Thinkpad and metallic look of the Macbook Pro.

You really think people keep ChromeOS on that thing? Hell no.
>>
>>52870449
>Because a $200 laptop does everything anyone could want from a laptop
i'm glad you're here to tell people what they want. bless you, anon
>>

>>

reee and so on

gorgeous design, but soldered storage is pure cancer

>>

>>

Probably has things like a caps-lock key.
>>
>>52869522

LMAO this fragile PoS cost $1000+? Christ, laptops these days suck ass.

Back in 2008 I built a beast of a laptop with a GTX280m and quad core QX9700. Only cost me ~$1600 because I got the CPU for $200, I bought from one of those Malaysia line workers that steal them off the assembly line and sell them on ebay.

I got a durable as fuck case and the thing looks brand new today and while it can't max out the latest games today its still fast a fuck compared to the dinky soda can, low power shit they pass off as high end today.

I rigged up a redundant battery on the lid, and carry around spares I can hot swap for long ass battery life on pacific plane rides. Yeah its thick as fuck but works. Wish they sold shit like this today. But this watered down "pixie" consuermized shit is all the rage. Fucking casuals, all they care about it "muh thin."
>>
>>52869522
The "build quality" of a macbook pro, with actually impressive hardware.

Downside is the 64gb storage on the 1300 model, but you can get a 256gb class u2 sd card for 120-ish and stripe an llvm across it.

Works great as a dev machine, although the broadwell chip is a pain in the ass (fuck Intel)
>>
>>52870494
>Why do people still buy beds?
I honestly don't know. Always make your own bed because you lie in it.
>>
>>52869929
You don't need a $1000 machine for a web browser. If you're spending $1000 on a machine so wimpy it uses passive cooling, you're a moron.
>>
>>52869955
$600, then. It's not a huge difference.

>>52869970
It already runs Gentoo. ChromeOS is Gentoo-derived.
>>
>>52871050
If the Pixel is a web browser then so is every other laptop that comes with Windows, because the first thing I do whenever I receive a laptop is remove the default operating system and install my distro of choice.
>>
>>52870172
That's all Chromebooks are good for. They're cheap and easy consumption devices. Buying a $1000 one is retarded.
>>
>>52871113
It has a Broadwell i5 and 8GB of RAM. It will do the same shit literally every other laptop does.
>>

Is widdle baybee mad he can't run windows on a machine he can't afford?

It is, but it isn't a typical one.

I should have said ANY lightweight distro.

It's called web dev

You do realize that the hardest thing your computer is doing 99% of the time is web browsing, right? Well someone has to write and test all that code and that's exactly what the chromebook pixel is designed to handle
>>
>>52871097
What are you even talking about?

A $1000 laptop needs a fan. Any $1000 laptop without a fan is a useless status symbol Facebook machine.

If you buy a $1000 laptop with no fan, you're a moron. It doesn't matter if it runs ChromeOS, Gentoo, Windows, OS X, BSD, or TempleOS. It will have $400 worth of performance.
>>
>>52871219
What 1000$ laptop that doesn't have a fan is it you are referring to?

The pixel 2 has a fan that cools quite appropriately. It generally tries to operate at passively cooled temps but will kick it on at high process load.
>>
>>52871219
This has a fan you retard.
>>
>>52869522

It is 12.85
>>
>>52871126
>It has a Broadwell i5 and 8GB of RAM. It will do the same shit literally every other laptop does.

Don't you guys realize that the whole argument in this thread is that better hardware is useless because of ChromeOS?

If you disagree with it, at least address it rather than pretending we're talking about a Windows laptop.

>>52871642
No, I'm simply an informed individual. Chromeos has several very compelling features that make it viable for an everyday OS. Only the lack of Cisco anyconnect support keeps me from using it as my daily driver.

>>52871643
Okay, fine. But none of those are the Chromebook pixel
>>
>>52871707
And now that I see anyconnect is offered as of December, maybe I'll try it out again. Crouton is comfy as fuck
>>

They'd do fine for browsing and minor work. Overpriced though.

Just have to wait for Core M to get cheaper.
>>
>>52871774
overpriced is the same thing as being shit

why can't people understand this?

everything exists on a quality/price scale

if your product is vastly overpriced, it is by definition shit

I'm saying that for 1000 you can get far better faggot, and for what it is, aka a facebook machine to take un class, a 200 chromebook is enough.

Buying something overpriced for what it is doesn't proove you are rich, it proves you are a retard who doesn't have anything to show off and hides his mediocrity behind "prenium" products, wich is exactly the audience crapple is targeting.

>>
>>52869587
Right? I know rich people. I live near one of the richest counties in the US. They're all tight fisted cheap ass fuckers and only buy things that are expensive if it's considered an investment. Almost all of them use Android phones and none of them own any sort of Mac. They refuse to spend money on expensive tech if it's going to be obsolete within a year. They buy the cheapest stuff there is so when they upgrade a year later they're not out very much money.
