this is my first time posting in the /tpg/, and I'm looking for some help. I'd like to ditch my shitty chromebook for a better thinkpad, I really just want something similar (good for school, porn, shitposting, etc) but a bit larger, reliable, and upgradeable.
I've been thinking about getting a t420 and upping the ram to 8 or 16gb and then swapping the hdd for a ssd, doesn't have to be big, i can just stream everything from my server. Don't need to be able to game, have a desktop.
Am I on the right track? I was thinking the t420 with a 128gb ssd, 1600x900 screen, 8gb of ram and an i5 should be fine for what i need.
Any advice? Sorry, I know I'm supposed to read the wiki but I wanted to double check after going through all of it, I don't have much cash to throw around right now. Anything else I should know? Whats a good price for a t420 before a ssd swap and all that, ebay auction wise?

I thought about it but it's only about an inch larger than my current chromebook, and the size is hard to get used to after sitting at a dual monitor setup all day, so I actually want the slightly bigger size from the t series, since the size doesn't matter since the laptop will be in use or in a backpack.
I was just looking at some more on the t420, if I want to go with an m.sata for the boot drive are there certain brands or types I need to stick to? or is compatability not a worry?

sorry to ask another question, but does swapping a mechanical out for a ssd really help battery life? that is something that is important to me too. If it does then I'll probably just settle down with a 2.5" ssd and be happy. If having a mechanical in there really doesn't hurt than much then I'll go m.sata and something like a 500gb mechanical

T420s/T430s have an upgrade kit
W series (15, 17-in) actually had some nice 1080p screens
T420/T430 are SOL
If you need 1080p on a 'ultrabook', I'd recommend getting a T440s and dropping in a t450s touchpad
if size isn't an issue, look at the w520 or t520 depending on your performance needs

yup. the t440s touchpad is buttonless and terrible overall. it renders the trackpoint useless and its a pain to use regardless

kit is ~$50 without the panel (another $70). it's not very cost effective and the kit is out of production at the moment. I had one but sold it recently.
If you are really not looking to spend money then forget the t440s and go with a low-res t440 and upgrade the screen to FHD and the trackpad yourself and then sell the old screen for $25 on ebay and throw the touchpad in the trash (cause no one's gonna buy it)

I fell for the meme partially. I bought a used x220 and dicked around a bit before swapping in an SSD & deciding what to stick on it. If I let it run full-blast it was 70c load all times. If I fiddled with power management it was 45c all times but locked up with basic one-tabbed browsing.
I threw linux on it. The temps are in the middle, it's snappier, and the battery life is dece even on the 6-cell.

Does anyone here have any suggestions to thinkpad alternatives? Before anyone jumps to conclusions, let me explain. I would love a T420, and I can afford it. However, the 16:9 ratio really bugs me. But, as you know, the T61 model is on its way out, with the Core2Duo chip and all, and I don't really want the T520 as it's quite large. So, fellow /g/entlemen, I ask you, are there any other brands or models such as Dell around the same size that have a 4:3/16:10 with sandy bridge and are just as cheap and reliable? HP kept 16:10 on some of the Elitebook models for one generation longer than Lenovo. I think the very latest 16:10 was probably the 2760p.

Anybody have any experience with the Toshiba Tecra A7 and/or A8? My employers have 100+ of them in conditions ranging from barely-used to I-let-my-5-year-old-play-with-it. They seem fairly sturdy from what I've seen, I'm considering upgrading them with some spare SO-DIMM's we have laying around and redeploying them with light weight Linux distro's installed. Good idea, yes or no?

How much of a difference in performance is it vs the T420's 2520m? I will be planning on using it just for internet and Linux work, but I would like to play some Quake or Doom on it occasionally. T410 doesn't have any vertical resolution advantage over the T420 anyway. Its max resolution is 1440x900 and there's no mods that I know of that would let you go higher than that.

For the uninitiated, they're probably sufficient. But the reality is that it's just been one long downward spiral ever since the acquisition. Thinkpads hit rock bottom with the X1C2 and T440 and while they may have rebounded slightly after the extreme backlash to those shitfests, they still have a long way to go before I'd even consider buying a new one.
But what you probably mean by "shit on the brand" is the keyboard design, so you get the standard --20 recommendation. The T420 screen sucks balls, get a T520 if you're going with T series.
So has anyone here done the FHD mod on an X220?
I'm in the market for a new or used laptop. It's either a pre-keyboard-fuckup thinkpad or a Prevision, but all the thinkpads other than the 15" ones of that time seem to have clownshow 1366x768 screens.
Somehow my X300 has a better screen than that.

i pulled the card out of a broken x60 tablet and put it in there but it's not recognized at all. does anyone have a list of the supported cards for the x201?

yes, it wouldn't give the 1802 error with the card from the thinkpad x60 so it wasn't because of the whitelist. i just took apart a t420 and put the card from it in there and it gave me the 1802 error. not sure if the card from the x60 is defective or not. i guess i'll try another one.
