Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>They’re really cheap when you buy a used one.
>Keyboards feel excellent while typing (yes, even the newer ones).
>Great durability thanks to the inclusion of rollcages and use of glass fiber reinforced plastic for the chassis. The keyboard is splash proof and spilled liquids will drain out.
>Utilitarian design - e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking solutions that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for almost every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing on the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Battery copypasta:

Battery tiers:
>New geunine lenovo - most expensive but more durable and dependable compared to the chinese counterparts. If money is no object, buy new.

>Used/refurbished genuine Lenovo - on a budget, these have all the benefits of new batteries, just with some wear. Only buy used batteries from sellers that will screencap battery stats so you know what you're getting. Usually price is on-par with new chinese batteries.

>New chinese batteries - reviews are mixed but most use sub-par cells and electronics. They may die unexpectedly or wear much faster than genuine lenovo batteries. Others seem to work fine. There are a million brands and batches out there, so there's no way to tell which is better than another, if they are. Some models (XX30 and up) will not charge 3rd party batteries, so avoid outright.

>used chinese or no-description used lenovo - reconsider your life choices that led you to this destitute position

Do not ask "is this battery gud?" You have all the information you need right here.

http://techreport.com/news/22859/why-is-ivy-bridge-so-hot-and-bothered

>The question is: why does Ivy appear to reach higher temps when overclocked than Sandy Bridge? Is it just the additional power draw being turned into more heat? Is it a thermal density issue, since Ivy's heat output is concentrated into a much smaller die area than Sandy's? Or is it something else?

>Curious, we asked Intel about the interface between the Ivy Bridge die and the heat spreader. Intel has confirmed to TR that Ivy uses a "different package thermal technology" than Sandy Bridge. The firm stopped short of answering our questions about why the change was made and how the thermal transfer properties of the two materials compare. However, Intel claims the combination of the new interface material and Ivy's higher thermal density is responsible for the higher temperatures users are observing with overclocked CPUs.

>Intel also points out Ivy Bridge has a higher TjMAX specification, which governs when the CPU starts throttling in order to protect itself from heat damage. The cut-off for the Core i7-3770K is 105°C, while the 2600K starts throttling at 100°C

>Turns out the difference in temperatures between the two was quite a bit wider than the 5°C difference between the thermal throttling thresholds. Our Ivy CPU flirts with 100°C at those settings, while the Sandy Bridge chip is currently running at about 80°C in the same test system.

>It appears that, all other things being equal, Ivy Bridge runs hotter. That almost certainly means the cooling is less efficient.

Not the guy you are responding too but every i7 overheats at some point. The cooling paste most manufacturers use (especially HP) are chewing gum tier. I fix a lot of laptops and every time I open up an old i7 im astounded by the state of the cooling paste and how retardedly it has been applied (pic related).

Not that the i5/i3 doesn't have this problem but since the i7 tends to run much hotter it is only logical you will run into problems earlier on.

this is my first time posting in the /tpg/, and I'm looking for some help. I'd like to ditch my shitty chromebook for a better thinkpad, I really just want something similar (good for school, porn, shitposting, etc) but a bit larger, reliable, and upgradeable.
I've been thinking about getting a t420 and upping the ram to 8 or 16gb and then swapping the hdd for a ssd, doesn't have to be big, i can just stream everything from my server. Don't need to be able to game, have a desktop.
Am I on the right track? I was thinking the t420 with a 128gb ssd, 1600x900 screen, 8gb of ram and an i5 should be fine for what i need.
Any advice? Sorry, I know I'm supposed to read the wiki but I wanted to double check after going through all of it, I don't have much cash to throw around right now. Anything else I should know? Whats a good price for a t420 before a ssd swap and all that, ebay auction wise?
>>
>>52873104
sounds good anon

since you have a desktop already you might consider the x220 since it is more portable with an identical amount of power

but the t420 is a great machine too
>>
>>52873297
I thought about it but it's only about an inch larger than my current chromebook, and the size is hard to get used to after sitting at a dual monitor setup all day, so I actually want the slightly bigger size from the t series, since the size doesn't matter since the laptop will be in use or in a backpack.
I was just looking at some more on the t420, if I want to go with an m.sata for the boot drive are there certain brands or types I need to stick to? or is compatability not a worry?
>>
>>52873466
any msata will be fine, but be aware that the msata port is only sata II
>>
>>52873466
sorry to ask another question, but does swapping a mechanical out for a ssd really help battery life? that is something that is important to me too. If it does then I'll probably just settle down with a 2.5" ssd and be happy. If having a mechanical in there really doesn't hurt than much then I'll go m.sata and something like a 500gb mechanical
>>
>>52873560
Depends heavily on the drives
>>
>>52873610
I would be using either a normal ssd, whatever is cheapest so crucial, mushkin, adata, something like that or a msata with a 500gb WD blue/black or hitatchi travelstar 5400rpm 2.5

>>
>>52873954
14 inches and below: post XX40
15 inches and above: post XX20

generally speaking

T420s/T430s have an upgrade kit
W series (15, 17-in) actually had some nice 1080p screens

T420/T430 are SOL

If you need 1080p on a 'ultrabook', I'd recommend getting a T440s and dropping in a t450s touchpad

if size isn't an issue, look at the w520 or t520 depending on your performance needs

yup. the t440s touchpad is buttonless and terrible overall. it renders the trackpoint useless and its a pain to use regardless

kit is ~$50 without the panel (another $70). it's not very cost effective and the kit is out of production at the moment. I had one but sold it recently.

If you are really not looking to spend money then forget the t440s and go with a low-res t440 and upgrade the screen to FHD and the trackpad yourself and then sell the old screen for $25 on ebay and throw the touchpad in the trash (cause no one's gonna buy it)

I fell for the meme partially. I bought a used x220 and dicked around a bit before swapping in an SSD & deciding what to stick on it. If I let it run full-blast it was 70c load all times. If I fiddled with power management it was 45c all times but locked up with basic one-tabbed browsing.

I threw linux on it. The temps are in the middle, it's snappier, and the battery life is dece even on the 6-cell.

Does anyone here have any suggestions to thinkpad alternatives? Before anyone jumps to conclusions, let me explain. I would love a T420, and I can afford it. However, the 16:9 ratio really bugs me. But, as you know, the T61 model is on its way out, with the Core2Duo chip and all, and I don't really want the T520 as it's quite large. So, fellow /g/entlemen, I ask you, are there any other brands or models such as Dell around the same size that have a 4:3/16:10 with sandy bridge and are just as cheap and reliable? I'll probably still end up getting the 900p T420, but I figured I would ask for advice here. Thanks guys

T420/30?
>>
>>52877559
People with no standards will tell you new ones are still perfectly fine. People with lesser standards will tell you the --20 Thinkpads were the last good ones. For the uninitiated, they're probably sufficient. But the reality is that it's just been one long downward spiral ever since the acquisition. Thinkpads hit rock bottom with the X1C2 and T440 and while they may have rebounded slightly after the extreme backlash to those shitfests, they still have a long way to go before I'd even consider buying a new one.

But what you probably mean by "shit on the brand" is the keyboard design, so you get the standard --20 recommendation. The T420 screen sucks balls, get a T520 if you're going with T series.
>>
So has anyone here done the FHD mod on an X220?
I'm in the market for a new or used laptop. It's either a pre-keyboard-fuckup thinkpad or a Prevision, but all the thinkpads other than the 15" ones of that time seem to have clownshow 1366x768 screens.

But there's no lever, and the latches are positioned on the bottom of the laptop so there's no way to remove the ultrabay without turning the laptop over or at least lifting it up. It's just a complete failure of a design and it baffles me how even lelnovo could be this backwards.

Thinkpads have dumbfuck hardware whitelists. It'll only recognise Lenovo-approved cards unless you put Coreboot/Libreboot on it.

I don't know why you're so picky about this consumertard board. If you're browsing unironically you're doing it wrong. That was my first "lenovo fucked everything up" of the day, for the record

I just discovered this yesterday after trying to boot to check something while in the proccess of flashing libreboot
That's bullshit. You would think disabling the fucking radios would let you boot but no...

yes, it wouldn't give the 1802 error with the card from the thinkpad x60 so it wasn't because of the whitelist. i just took apart a t420 and put the card from it in there and it gave me the 1802 error. not sure if the card from the x60 is defective or not. i guess i'll try another one.
