Why are you not using a Chromebook running a full version of Linux?
>>
>>52859540
Because that's no possible and ChromeOS is always running in the background.
>>
>>52859540
I am but lets face it, these things are pretty shitty and usually need patching to work
>>
>>52859540
I'm not paying $200 USD just to use a hobby OS that's only good for web browsing
>>
>>52859560
How is it not possible?
You can completely wipe the Toshiba Chromebook 2 of ChromeOS and run pure Linux
>>
>>52859591
pretty sure it's possible with all chromebooks though you'll have to flash the bios on the early ones for sure
>>
>>52859540
I have an Acer C720 with linux mint tucked away, but I use my T420 with Xubuntu because it's more better
>>
>>52859540
Because I just got a Lenovo 11e. 4gb ram, 128gb ssd, celeron quadcore. $199 on woot about a week ago. Wiped it and installed Arch.
>>
>>52861637

>>
>>52859540

>>
>>52859540
Because I can't get the trackpad to work properly on my Toshiba Chromebook 1 when using Crouton
>>

The Chromebook 2 cannot run a full Linux distro without crouton I think.

I would take a Chromebook any day.

because im using a slatebook x2 with android.

Because they all are plasticy, creaky, ugly, cheap pieces of shit.
Except for the pixel. That is fantastic, but way overpriced for the little storage and CPU it has, and also hard to get.
>>
>>52861920
Nope literally just did it yesterday. You have to flash seaBIOS. To do so you have to open her up and remove hardware level write protection. I have arch installed now, very nice :)
>>
>>52859591
fuck yeah i might get this! Is it hard to do? link to a guide??

Is it possible to install Windows on a chromebook?
>>
>>52862372
Yeah bruv, you will also likely need to remove hardware level write protection. Try the command here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Toshiba_Chromebook_2

You don't have to install arch linux after that command. Just insert USB of whatever Linux distro you want and install.

Why do that when I can get a X220 for like $100, add one of my SSDs and have something nice for cheap?

I wanted the Toshiba CB2 to go a little down in price before picking one up and it never did

The keyboard also seemed slightly shitty and there were several hardware compatibility kinks needing to be worked out the last time I checked
>>

I’d just like to interject for a moment. What you’re refering to as Windows, is in fact, NSA/Windows, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, NSA plus Windows. Windows is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another locked down component of a fully functioning NSA system made useful by the NSA corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by the government.
Many computer users run a modified version of the NSA system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of NSA which is widely used today is often called “Windows”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the NSA system, developed by the NSA.
There really is a Windows, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Windows is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Windows is normally used in combination with the NSA operating system: the whole system is basically NSA with Windows added, or NSA/Windows. All the so-called “Windows” versions are really versions of NSA/Windows.

Lightweight cheap laptop.

Take the Toshiba Chromebook 2 for example:

Good processor, 4GB ram, 8-12 hour battery life, good keyboard(wish it was a full one though). Get a large SD card or USB to store all your shit, hell even an external HDD.

4/5 would recommend.

If you have a desktop PC why use a desktop disguised as a laptop?

Because an old thinkpad offers better hardware, repeatability and aesthetism for cheaper.

If you care about weight, then you might as well get the macbook and open another thread to justify your choice of a laptop with only (not yet standard) one port.

It's pretty much at 0% usage all the time in htop. It would depend a lot on video decoding and all that.
Besides, CPU usage is good unless it's not optimized.
If it has to decode video, I don't care that it goes up to 100% usage, unless another decoder offers the same quality with less.

>>52875168
Aaand that is my cue. I am a "stupid fucker" who tried to make a legit thread regarding chromebooks a few days ago and got chased out and now that somebody else has a thread that actually survived I can ask some questions...

I do need a new computer, one that will last but also one that is affordable and am honestly considering a chromebook. It seems the tech is here but how are the actual builds of these things? Their low price and seemingly lackluster parts ( Excluding the Pixel which I don't think I want to buy due to price given these machines are glorified daily planners ) makes me hesitant to make a purchase. I also want to get away from Windows and Apple but don't know if Chrome OS is a good option vs another Linux system. I won't ask you all to be my personal tech support but I hope you can tell me the best way to find what I want to meet my needs.

Right now I do mostly use the internet when I do use a computer. I'd like something I can do minor editing of videos with ( don't know if that can be done online ) along with holding up well to travel ( may possibly get dropped, dinged or mishandled by myself or others ) along with some light work.

How do I find out if one of these books truly meets my needs?
