some hardware stores have no-name digital watches on the shelves, I think, though

Some right-handed people wear their watches on their dominant hands. I'm one of them
>>
>>52699447
>want to adjust time
>have to give yourself a reach-around to unscrew/pull out the crown

unless you're wearing a smartwatch in which case you're already used to reach-arounds on the regular
>>
>>52699447
I did that when I was a kid, then my parents told me that I should wear it on my left.

Then as a preteen or so I got a uh, different kind of watch as a gift - it wasn't exactly a pocket watch, it just had a small "clip" thing that you attached to a loop in your jeans, otherwise it looked like a generic mall sportswatch

that was actually a pretty cool watch, it had a small LED light on its side and it was easy to deattach from your pants, so it served as a light as well. I wonder what those are called (if they're called anything in particular).

>>
>>52699469
you should not adjust the time while the watch is on your wrist

it puts unnecessary pressure on the crown and may cause damage if done regularly
>>
>>52699546
That sounds absurd.
>>
>>52699447
Me too. It's because my dad broke his wrist and started wearing his watch on his right wrist, so I did too. Now it just feels wrong to have it on my left wrist.
>>
>>52699546
>>52699578
I can see what he means, you're manipulating the crown in a precarious angle when it's on your wrist so force isn't distributed evenly.
>>
>>52699771
And this is no different than winding, something people have done for ages on the wrist more than adjusting the time. Not to mention that it's not exactly hard, as in putting stress, on the crown while its being worn unless you're fat and/or hamfisted.
>>
>>52699794
winding on the wrist just sound incredibly uncomfortable in addition to being potentially risky

anyway, its more something you should avoid if you really want you watch to live long and prosper. I'm not saying it will damage all watches.

Don't read anything bad into this, but, how old are you?

It must be a generational thing because everyone may age still wears watches.
I think we must be the last generation to do so natively.

I've personally noticed that more people of ~my age (of the ones I know) have started wearing watches as they've progressed further into their studies / jobs. Relatively few of us wore watches when we were upper secondary school kids, now that we're earning our doctorates, working real jobs or whatever, most wear one.

I find it odd as well.

I wore a watch while being a kid during grade school (some cheap digital), switched to wearing pic related in middle school and threw it in a drawer after couple of years.

Stopped wearing watches till a year after i finished HS, then i kinda bought the Raketa and started shitposting regularly to /wt/.

Boy that was in 2014 i think, quite a while since then.

Seiko Alpinist has a "compass" but it's really ad-hoc, doesn't work well enough for precision use
>>

https://www.marathonwatch.com/product/unmounted-wrist-compass
As the previous poster said I doubt any (non-GPS + ABC) in-watch or wrist mounted compass would work good enough for actual use. Guess there's the Garmin Foretrex series if you have a very serious need - but that's not a watch nor particularly clean looking.

It's the Eone Bradley watch. Its designed for blind or the visually impaired so they can feel where the small steel balls are on the watch to tell the time (the ball on the main face is supposed to be the minutes hand and the one around the case is supposed to be the hours hand).

It was originally made for a soldier who lost his eye sight in war or something like that. I guess its a interesting concept and made with good intentions, but nothing really beats the style of a normal hands watch since this design seems to really just complicate it if you're not visually impaired.

I wear my watch on my right wrist. And there's no specific hand to wear a watch. I've heard you're supposed to wear it on the left wrist so you can wind it but it apparently puts pressure on the crown.

But i couldn't really give two shits about which wrist to wear it on. Just wear your watch on whatever side you find most comfortable, for me it's right, for others it's left.

Watches are a big technological advancement and just because some don't require electricity doesn't mean they aren't as technologically advanced. So if any thread deserves to be on /g/, its /wt/. Now fuck off.

I've got a Ray. It's pretty good, certainly not great. Bezel is very average, bracelt is above average for the price point but has exceedingly average end links, lume is pretty good, dial and printing is great, overall worth the money, can't expect much more for the price point, even has an in house movement

Except I've added three vintage Seikos to these threads in just the last few weeks.

1971 Seiko LM Special 5206-6060
1967 Seikomatic-P 5106-8010

And the very last King Seiko automatic before Seiko went all quartz at the high end, the 1975 King Seiko Special 5256-8010.

Oh, and it runs +0 - +5 s/d in 6 positions and 0.0ms - 0.2ms in 6 positions.

Thanks. It is one of the two vintage Seikos I wanted the most, and it is one of the rarest, I just happened to luck out and find one in decent shape for a good price.

I'm still looking for a KS 4502 or GS 4522 for the historical importance of the Daini produced 45xx 36,000 bph handwinding caliber being the one that BTFO the Swiss and caused the cancellation of Swiss Chronometer trials.

As for where to look: Yahoo! Japan Auctions. There is more risk of getting a watch not as described (or rather poorly translated) but the prices are WAY better. I got your 52KS for $120 USD + shipping.

It's bretty good. I had one minor issue which was a stuttering chronograph seconds hand, but the seller on WUS sorted it out very quickly for me. The ST-19 movement is a Chinese version of the Venus 175 movement, so if the QC is decent it'll be as accurate and reliable as an old Swiss watch.

It's worth it, I just hate the AUTOMATIC font being the exact same as the one here on 4Chan

Aside from that sapphire, good movement, nice bracelet, actually made in Japan etc.

For a dress watch under 1000 freedom dollars I recommend:
A used and serviced Glashutte GUB (Commie Glashutte Original, you're getting 80% the value of a 7.5K watch for a couple hundred bucks) get it on ebay
Used Nomos get it on watchrecon, you're probably wishing for luck here but might find a used Tangente for 1000 or a bit more
If you can get on the waitlist then at the end of your budget is the Maison Celadon Imperial at 970 buckaroos
If you can't do that try and find the Beijing Watch Factory Everest for about 300
There is also the Orient Bambino for 150 bucks it's quite basic but a great value even if it is a meme
If youre lazy as shit just get an eBay Soviet Raketa or Poljot or a Seagull/Tisell Nomos ripoff called the Rodina (the latter is also a huge meme for poorfags who are le classy gentlemen on WUS)

Problem is 1K is kind of a bad range especially for dress watches. I listed some examples but these plus higher end mid range Seiko are basically it. You're too low to get anything Swiss or German of any note, but much higher than your lower end Soviet surplus, Orient, or Chinese knock offs. Until recently we thought Stowa was a good deal, then found out their cases and a bunch of other key parts are Chinese but they're still charging you Damasko or Sinn level prices

Honestly if I were you I'd get a new Sinn 556 from Watchbuys shipped free for about 1050. Not quite dress and above your budget but superb value, and actually made in Germany with a nice decorated Sellita 2824 knockoff

You come across as a huge dick in these posts and for no reason
>It's Chinese therefore it's bad
Hint: there's Chinese parts in a Seiko Bright, as there is in everything that isn't basically 100% in house like a Damasko DK range or, in fact, Soviet and East German watches

>Soviet
>nope
This is a shit argument. Soviet movements are built on 1950s and 60s robust Swiss machines and the designs are often what was best for the period. More importantly they're easy and cheap to service and maintain and accurate. And don't have any chinkshit, dank memes aside Soviet workers were skilled and often good at their jobs especially in the technical trades.

Also your criticism of Glashutte GUB is as unmerited as it is ignorant
>Oi vey it looks old
This is a shit argument.
>it's crap I know it is
What are you basing this off of? East Bloc chronos were built on Swiss machines as well and because they were military issue were of higher quality by necessity

In addition Glashutte movements were for the haves in GDR society and so had the best solutions to supply problems in the entire bloc. Glashutte Original to this day are being Swatch Jews and charging you 8500 shekels for upgraded GDR movements with rhodium plating and decoration

Pic related the calibre VEB 11-26 in my spezichron is a superb movement. It's only major shortcoming was it was made with a plastic date changing wheel which the watchmaker who worked on this had to replace with a lathed brass one. Still only ran me about 300 USD total. And just for reference: the movements derived from this by the Swatch GO today go for about 7K in the senator 60S lines. Ridiculous.

Just Becuse you'll have to hunt for quality doesn't mean it isn't there

But as with many posts it was the usual affair: "Hi /wt/ I'm going to buy this watch. Unless someone shows me the exact same watch but better and for cheaper I'm going to buy it, and no other options don't count"

Today there was an instructor who is a licensed servicer of a lot of swiss-shit manufacturers, mostly Swatch Group. He redpilled us about the stuff we already knew here on /wt/, on how Swatch and the rest of the Swiss are assholes, but one thing he said I'd like to share to piss off our resident Omega fanboys:

The Co-Axial escapement if fucking dogshit. The concept is one and a half centuries old, Daniels only modified it from modern wristwatches. It was called the Fasoldt escapement, originally meant for pocket watches. It was good because it eliminated sliding friction of the pallet stones, so they needed no lubricant. On the other hand Omega had to rewrite the internal service manuals like monthly for a while before they figured out the EXACT amount of oil where this piece of shit would actually work. Right now it needs a microscopic amount of oil on the locking jewels for "cushioning", a tiny bit more and it stop working reliably, a tiny bit less and the escapement wheel gets destroyed over time.

So with all this "precision" Omega watches will stop and fucking die in five years if left unserviced (quite the improvement from old watches that last many years on gummy oil if you're a horlogerie hebrew wanting to get rich off servicing). Not that they wouldn't die anyway, why do you think replacement of certain parts is MANDATORY every time for every watch Omega and other high-end Swatch brands service. They just swap out the time bomb parts with fresh time bomb parts.

TL;DR: get only pre-Swatch vintage if you want Omega. Or just go full Jap/Slav and reject the alpine merchant completely.

There's this guy at work, every morning I see him with a watch in his hand, a big clock on his monitor, making sure his watch is accurate within a second, sometimes redoing several times it until he's satisfied. And the best part is, except for when he's looking at the time, his watch is always covered by his sleeve so nobody can see whatever fancy watch he's wearing that day anyway.
Are all watch people this autistic or is he just a special case?

Right now using a Garmin Vivofit, would a spot smart watch that automatically syncs be a good upgrade? Or should I get a normal (Non-smart) ~$50-$100 watch and buy another activity tracker of sorts?

Jewmega has entered into maximum shekel collecting mode.

Gotta wonder though, what's going to happen when ETA cuts the supply of movements off?

Sounds like someone at omega got too excited with a different escapement before considering the long term downsides. Or if you want to be cynical, planned obsolescence.
>>
>>52705353
It was planned obsolescence. Let's not be stupid; servicing is a huge cash cow for Swatch and Richest

>>52705317
Omega is owned by Swatch so they'll continue shekeling niggers, sheiks, and Communist Party of China bigwigs no problem. As for the rest of the industry, they'll buy from Sellita. Those who can't will die.

And of course most dogshit will transition to to Miyota family.

Microbrands running on Vostok 2416B when?

>It was planned obsolescence. Let's not be stupid; servicing is a huge cash cow for Swatch and Richest
The new scam done by Breitling I think is that they ask more for service because they ship the watch all the way to regional service centers instead of local certified watchmakers.

Seems the industry-wide alpine kike plan is to cut out all the middlemen so nobody gets a cut of those delicious shekels, all profit goes to the top. They remind me of the fucking mob desu.

I read somewhere that the electric signal for the speaker detonates the bomb. From the 9V battery it looks like the speaker signal only acts as a switch for a transistor since you need the kind of juice of a 9V battery to electrically detonate the explosives.

Then again I'm dumb when it comes to electronic circuits.

>>52705635
This sort of happened before. Cornavin was a Swiss brand that was kinda popular in the Eastern-Bloc for some reason. So when they tanked the Soviets bought the name and started making all-commie Cornavins in the USSR for communist export. I believe most were just rebranded Poljots and Slavas, but they didn't even mark any country of origin on the dial. Pic related, an unmarked Soviet Cornavin.

I'm lucky enough to have two original Swiss Cornavins (family hand me downs), both have the 1950's Arogno 151 movement with subdial seconds.
>>
>>52705456
Laco is a bad example as they've been on Miyota for.their low end models for years. It's just they're focusing on more low to mid range models with Miyota than on their Swiss movement models. Which is funny because Laco while not a good value for money (their basic Swiss models cost as much as a basic Sinn or Damasko) they are at least made in German cases unlike the WUS circlejerk Stowa

Still there will be a LOT more companies going to the Miyota 9015
Many "Swiss" companies will die but some will persevere. The other smart dogshit companies will realize there is a market for "made in X" so they'll have "made in Italy" or "made in USA" watches cased in the home country on the dial from Chinese parts and Miyota movements

>>52705536
>microbrands on Vostok
Never ;___;
Actually it's not a bad thing. It keeps costs low and also means that Vostok the company which is actually honest keeps running. Moreover bullshit brands making use of the movement will only bring those good movements down

Now if some reputable brands wanted to use thwm no problem. Issue is right now it would be the same Chinese cases

>The Mountain Jews are like the mob
Oh yeah
They hate the idea of the local watchmaker doing things at decent prices. They hate anyone but themselves having 100% of the cash and control. And their biggest new demographics of richfags without taste don't give a shit about the cost, which brings them more cash

Someone ob WUS (who got yelled down) expressed this in a grrat way: buy most watches then enjoy, it's yours. Buy a Swiss? You should he honoured, it's really the company's and you're just paying rent for the honour

>>52705635
I hope to God this doesn't happen because then actual vostoks won't be sub 100 freedom dollars as WIS flood the market

The actual movements though were made like most socialist products were: It's useless if the end user can't tinker with or fix it because muh shortages
>>
>>52705773
The 9V only charges the capacitors. You need a lot of current/voltage to detonate which you can't get from a battery alone. The transistor is switched by the watch's alarm tweeter signal.
>>
>>52705944
Yeah basically what I said only sounding less dumb. Capacitors, exactly.

We care. Nice post. Just busy
>>
>>52705866
Among the things.

But i was referring to the company which imported transitional Vostok watches (Post soviet, pre "made in Russia") to europe and mainly Switzerland and marked them with a small icon of their company on the dial. And charged a hefty sum on them.

IMO i think the original Soviet Corvains are fine, mostly were Poljots and some Slavas,a few Raketas and Vostoks.
>>52705888
You're right, they'll go with the Shinloa approach. Though in some cases (Like Stowa for example) it won't necessarily work well, some people will be able to call out the bullshit.

And so far the only ones that used or still using Vostok movements are Vostok-europe, which is a rather respectable micro-brand. And i doubt the price of the Amphibia will rise, hell if they implement the economical reforms (1 ruble will be worth about 1 USD, and the exchange rate will be fixed) the price might even drop.

Aka more cheap Vostoks for us, unless the Neptune SE is going to be relaunched i might get another one with a 059 dial.

Also just tested out my Dirskie's accuracy while being fully wound up, -0.1sec deviation in 24 hours.

Most interdastingle.

I've been reading up on the co-axial and had read that generally people have come to the conclusion that it provides, in the end, no practical benefits compared to the typical swiss lever variants.

I'm assuming you're at a watchmaking school?

Did this instructor say anything about any other brands?
Did they voice any opinions on anything else?

Please give us the juicy details!
