I've been on the go a lot recently and haven't been able to shitpost as much, so I was wondering what would be a good device to shitpost from on the go that wouldn't weigh a lot or take up much space yet still be comfy to use.

Phones really aren't comfy for shitposting though, as it takes a long time to type out a post and god help you if you try to quote multiple people. There's also the problem of it regularly refreshing pages when you go between tabs so you have to find the last post you read.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use.
Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

i bought a viliv s7 a few months ago from south korea complete with korean kb for $200+40 shipping. i have xp on it atm but it came with win8 which ran awfully fucking slowly.
bought it to have a dinky little computer (guess i got what i paid for eh?) read ebooks and comics on it and play some 90s games on it but even those games run awfully sluggishly and the screen looks pretty bad when turned 90 degrees.
thinking about installing linux on it and see how well it runs then.
all i really wanted was a decent running small laptop form factor computer like all those umpcs but nobody makes them anymore, its all just tablets and i want a unit i can prop up with a keyboard

They make still make 7" netbooks like pic related that are about the size of the Libretto and have 1 gb of ram and a 1.5 Ghz dual core ARM processor (though most that you'll find have worse), but sadly no one has managed to put any Linux distros on them so you're just stuck with Android.
>>

They're in the $75-$90 range if I remember correctly. I really wouldn't want to get one to attempt it though as if it doesn't work I'm stuck with Android and I hate Android with a passion.

I have one of the (older) versions of that that ran windows CE, looks identical to that though. People got debian onto it, although with 128mb ram and a 300mhz processor it isn't useful for much besides irssi and links2 in framebuffer mode.

Did a bit more research. You can put Linux on the newer ones that use the dual core WM8880 SOC, you just don't get any support for sound, wifi, or the SD card reader. The older ones that use the single core WM8850 or even older WM8650 apparently will work halfway decent.

I'd just go for used netbooks really, if tablets aren't your thing. eee pc:s, lenovo and so on should be decent choices.

they can be found for cheap and they're easy to set up to be usable since they're x86 and not something less standard for desktop OS

RAM is always upgradeable and so are HDD:s, batteries also replaceable, though some may have relatively bad battery lives
>>
>>52697873
I'm interested in this subject. How much RAM is needed for general web browsing/shitposting now days? Also, what should I be looking for processor wise as I've seen benchmarks and even phone processors from 2012-2013 shit on the older ~2010 VIA and Atom processors used in netbooks.

One of the NEC mobilepro series, I'd guess. Looks very similar to the one I have. Windows CE and their low amount of ram makes them pretty useless today, sadly. I don't care about trying to game or do graphics stuff, but it was just too slow for me.

I've come to the conclusion that the best option for portability and functionality is one of those x86 full Windows tablets. I'm just disappointed that most of them only have 1gb of RAM, it's just not enough for my uses. Ideally I'd like 4gb, but 2gb would work. Paired with a bluetooth keyboard it combines the portability and functionality I want.

I've tried Android tablets, but they're just too limited. Only really good for reading or videos.

They're a little heavier than I want, but I'm probably going to settle for a used Surface Pro 2 with the extended battery keyboard.

i had one of these: a 400MHz Pentium-II Vaio PCG-C1XS. I got it for free in 2006 because a friend (whose job was salvaging shit like this) didn't want it. It had a fantastic design (and screen) and it looked sleek as hell, but it was so slow. Most programs took an eternity to start, so I ended up just using it as a little thin-client to remote control my desktop back home. Exactly how usable nowdays are the older netbooks with processors worse than the Atom N270 such as the Celeron Ms and VIAs? Can you watch videos on Youtube on them? Can you even do normal browsing without it lagging like hell? Looking at benchmarks, the processors seem to be significantly weaker than a single core from my smartphone from 2012 with the Atom N270 being comparable to one core.
>>
>>52712323
Atoms seems to be right at the border of usefulness. 480p youtube videos are without slowdowns.

512 MB of RAM is probably to little, is 1 GB enough or do I need 2 GB if I wanted one of these as a shitposting machine?

I like the Dell 910 better than those.

http://www.ebay.com/sch/Laptops-Netbooks-/175672/i.html?_from=R40&_sop=15&_nkw=dell+910

Same processor, same resolution, smaller screen so better DPI. Doesn't look like a 4-year old's play toy, but at 9" the keyboard is a little cramped. I still like the 9" because I already have several "real" laptops and the whole point of this is to be small. I'd love it if I could find cheap, usable computers at the 7" or 5" size but they don't seem to exist.

The 910 takes rare half-size, PATA-over-mPCI drives so if that ugly HP thing takes full size drives that's a point in it's favor. If you're looking for a 10.1" netbook I'd recommend one of the later asus eee pc's like the 1015 series.
>>
>>52712527
If all you want is a strict shitposting machine, you can get by with 128 MB if you want. I regularly post from an NT4 box with 128 MB and a Powerbook with 192 MB, 4chan with JS off eats next to nothing and I can handle around 5-10 tabs. Of course I wouldn't recommend that, I'm just saying it's perfectly doable.

With JS on, 512 MB will get you by, I usually like to have 1 GB though, my P4 boxes can handle 30+ tabs of 4chan and other primarily textual sites just fine.

With shitty web players? Don't know, I'd trust them about as far as I can throw them, I don't really watch videos enough to have good experience on the subject though.
>>
>>52712527

I've used dell 910's with 512, 1gb, and 2gb. 2gb DDR2 is cheap as hell at this point so there's no real reason to go with less.

Just get a model that's not soldered on (most of them) and swap it out for like $10-$15.

With linux, ublock, ublock origin chan posting works just fine. Just don't try to browse some cuckscript, web 2.0 shitfest like the verge with a stock browser

The form factor is dead. Which is a shame, because right now the technology advanced enough for it to be viable.

Like this quadcore Atom SoC has the performance of a C2D laptop using 2-4W of power.

My Fujitsu Lifebook P1630 was pretty good. Had a pretty weak processor (C2D SU9300) and 2GB of RAM but was pretty snappy with an SSD.

It was pretty decent overall with an 8.9" resistive touchscreen at 1280x800, stylus and trackpoint. Battery usually lasted 2-3 hours with the 3-cell and 4-5 with the 6-cell.

ALRIGHT IDIOTS

LISTEN UP

YOU WANT INTEL ATOM X5 HARDWARE

ITS A 2-WATT CPU WITH AMAZING POWER FOR ITS SIZE

VIRTUALLY ALL INTEL ATOM X5 SYSTEMS RUN OFF 5V USB POWER (2A)

THIS MEANS THEY ARE COMPATIBLE WITH ALL THE BATTERY POWER BANKS AND SOLAR CHARGING SYSTEMS DESIGNED FOR MOBILE PHONES AND TABLETS. ANKER MAKES SOME GREAT SHIT

THE INTEL ATOM X5 CAN ALSO FUCKING PLAY GAMES.
TO GIVE YOU AN IDEA OF ITS POWER, IT CAN RUN SKYRIM AT ABOVE 30FPS WITH MINIMUM SETTINGS. THIS IS AMAZING FOR A 2 WATT CPU. MANY MODERN GAMES ARE PLAYABLE AND ALL THE OLDER GAMES ARE FULLY PLAYABLE.

THE ATOM X5 CHERRY TRAIL COMES WITH INTEL HD GRAPHICS
AND THE ENTIRE ARCHITECTURE IS 14nm BROADWELL

SO FAR I AM WAITING FOR A CHINA 2in1 TABLET TO BE DELIVERED IN THE MAIL. THE MODEL IS CHUWEI Hi10

ITS A SHAME BRAND NAME COMPANIES DONT MAKE THESE
YOUR ONLY MAINSTREAM OPTIONS ARE ASUS AND TOSHIBA AND THEY ARE OVERPRICED SHIT (ESPECIALLY THE ASUS)

THIS IS ALL BECAUSE MICROSOFT CONTROLS THE HARDWARE INDUSTRY AND THEY WANT THE CHERRY TRAIL ATOM TO BE SOME EXCLUSIVE SHIT TO THE SURFACE
THERE IS NO OTHER REASON WHY THE INTEL X5 ATOM IS NOWHERE ELSE ON THE MARKET

ITS AN AMAZING PROCESSOR

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

> the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Pretty neat. That panel is taking up way too much realestate though. You might try something like openbox, or even twm, if you want to play with it some more.

might do exactly that, was originally trying to make it look like my Solaris/CDE VM I run on my desktop for remote access but I gave up after the icon sets and window decorations didn't really mesh well and none of the themes I saw really looked good

OpenBox is pretty nice, I think I'll give it a go on here.

Not a bad idea, anon. This is pretty nice just for a quick uni-tasking session like checking email, note taking or web surfing. I'll save Xfce for editing/testing clusterfuck shell scripts.

Well, I'm posting from that Toshiba Satellite and it isn't fun at all. Currently using Firefox with uMatrix under Windows XP as I can't find remember which of the 20+ floppy images I have is the boot image that will allow me to boot from USB as I don't have any blank CDs sitting around. Text input is lagging slightly with only this page open and scrolling is horrible. Overall it's almost unusable.

You can install CDE

Wtf is that dog? I want it.

not sure what it will do with the resolution though, it seems one of the desktopfriends who tried it had it working with widescreen displays out of the box without a problem, Solaris CDE for sure won't tolerate any "unorthodox" (non 5:4 or 4:3) resolutions.

I'm also just a lazy piece of shit and I don't feel like building it, maybe I'll try it some other time

Can you install Linux on these things? I'd settle for debian or even ubuntu
