Audiophool thread

desu before seeing several videos linked from /g/ threads, I'd think these people are just retarded.

I don't get how people can unironically buy "bridges" that lift UNSHIELDED cables off the floor, to "reduce noise".

If you know one of these folds, just use him.

The best sound comes from using an SSD and removing all other harddrives, as these add a bright and harsh sound into the music. USB harddrives are also very noisy and should be avoided. A network attached storage (NAS) is a little better but still not good. An SSD is a must.

It's also important to convert ALL music into WAV. This gives a silkier sound with more detail. Lossless formats like FLAC are very noisy during playback which adds edginess into the sound. The same is true for mp3 files. Converting mp3 into WAV makes it silkier, however, since the mp3 files are compressed it sounds too blurry. Keeping them as mp3 adds edginess which compensates for the blurriness. If storage space is limited on the SSD, convert all lossless formats into WAV, and keep mp3 as they are.

If you must use a standard harddrive, the best sound comes from a low RPM drive like WD Green. However, even with everything converted to WAV it sounds worse than FLAC from the SSD.

If you can only afford a small SSD. You can copy and paste music files to it before playback, similar to changing CDs in your CD player. The simplest is to keep your music library on an external harddrive, and then copy the album to your SSD before playback. But it's absolutely critical to unplug the USB harddrive afterwards. You don't want to listen to music with it still plugged in, because the brightness gives painful headaches.
>>
>>52691977
Windows has an edgy and bright sound while Ubuntu has a grey and dull sound, but with more inner detail. Lucid Puppy Linux has the best sound by giving both clear and silky sound with greater transparency, openness and detail. It has no weaknesses whatsoever. This is because the operating system is copied into RAM on startup. When installing Lucid Puppy, remember to make a Frugal install.

Choose RAM with a heatsink around as this gives smoother sound. Don't use RAM that are nude (where you see the circuit board).
>>
>>52691977
How the SSD is formatted also affects the sound. NTFS sounds the edgiest, ext3 sounds better, FAT and ext2 sounds the smoothest.

"A loudspeaker in which we have taken conservation of energy to its ultimate consequence: all bass, middle and high tone units are fully coordinated with one another and function on an axis of 180 degrees. This means that all impacting forces are neutralised and the system can function in perfect ease. All loudspeaker volume levels are active and thus do away with those energy-wasting post-impulse oscillations that afflict conventional loudspeakers and the air they contain. The two subwoofer towers can be actively fitted to the room to avoid erasement and ensure transmission of the full music signal. Experience the pure energy of the music – just as though you were present at the original performance. This loudspeaker system is tangible proof of our highest claim – that we build legends."

Ok.

I really can't comprehend why people spend so much on power interconnects when all the wiring in the walls, breaker panel, transformers and transmission lines is shitty pig iron wire. I can see spending a lot on signal cables like RCA's but fucking power cables???

One thing you should know is that CD players were pretty shit in the 90's, so the reason the PS1 made rounds with audiophiles is because it was better than anything else - at the time - but by now I think most sources are probably as good or better.

>>
>>52701621
Wait are you talking about the reflex port or what? Positioning your subwoofer near a wall accentuates bass response by roughly two to three dB. Positioning it into a corner accentuates it even more by 4dB and up. This is usually the recommended place to put your subwoofer as it lets you to run less power into it while getting the same sound pressure level, lowering both distortion and power usage. All of this depends on the subwoofer(or loudspeaker) used, too. Some models(like closed cabinets) don't care about the proximity of the wall too much because there is no port and some ported designs fire downwards or forward.

When I say near a wall I don't mean you block the port or the speaker element entirely. Keep them at least 20cm away from walls.

Managing subwoofer frequencies is tough shit. You can do some stuff with DSP in your listening window but room acoustics play a massive role with frequencies below 200Hz.

>>52701730

>>52691977

>>
>>52701621
The speakerish thing is called a driver, it's what produces sound. Tweeters make high-pitched sound, then go mid-range drivers, and woofers are the ones that make bass.
The hole is called a port, if your speakers are ported, you have to make sure the area around there is vacant. If you want to place speakers flat up against something, you need to get either sealed cabinets or front-ported speakers.
The higher the frequency of sound, the more directional it becomes, sub-bass radiates outwards in an omni-directional pattern, so it doesn't matter how your sub is positioned, while the tweeters should preferably be aimed directly at your head.

This is a seriously pleb question, but does anyone have suggestions on a cheap amp with 3.5mm audio-out? And when I say cheap, I mean as inexpensive as possible. Preferably in the 20 dollar range or lower. I've seen some small amps that fit the bill, but they only have line-outs for actual speakers and no headphone jack. S

See, I just got this professional monitor for playing my old games, but it only has a mono input and it doesn't have a 3.5mm audio-out jack. 99% of the time I prefer playing video games with headphones on anyway, so I don't care so much about getting decent speakers. Just something that I can hook my headphones up that has a volume dial and doesn't sound like shit, that's all.

Right now I'm pretty much forced to use these piece of shit PC speakers I had buried in the closet.

lol iNuke. There are different variations but mine was like $150.

You could build this for yourself anon if you had the space and were willing to spend the time. It wouldn't have to be a dream. It wouldn't be that outrageously expensive either, maybe $10k with projector, amps and drivers? Maybe even less.

That has to be so loud. Wonder what the rest of the room looks like, surely this is a basement.

Get a pair of active nearspeaker monitors. Even non expensive brands like KRK or Behringer have decent stuff at that price range.

Get at least a 5", if you can go for a 6" you'll have better bass.
>>
>>52703991
That's high SPL, not the distortion.
>>
>>52704678
Class d is great for what it is. Very energy efficient. But its bad audio quality and thats objectivly speaking since you take the original audio signal and chop it into a square wave and then low pass filter it to get a somewhat similar signal to what you started with.

Class d has never been a topology based around audio quality its purely a compromise for energy effiency because of the huge losses in class a and ab.
