>phone and tablets have better resolution screens than most laptops (typically 1366x768)

Why are they still giving us this shit resolution as standard?
>>
>>52662459
They aren't, anon. Maybe if you buy bottom-of-the-barrel gear, but then the phone would have lower resolution as well.
>>
>>52662459
>having a huge sceen on a laptop

eww no.
>>
>>52662800
>resolution equivalent to display size
ya dun messed up tripfag
>>
>>52662459
That's what happens when you buy a $199 laptop and a $799 phone.
>>
>>52662863
Oh
>>
>>52662459
Because the farther the screen is from your face, the lower the resolution you can meaningfully use.

Either you're a retard who holds your phone at arm's length or you're a retard who presses your face against your laptop's screen.
>>
>>52662459
your eyes can't see larger than 1366x768

1. Windows is still bad at DPI scaling, which means even Windows 10 devices still use 1366x768 in 11.6" form factors.
2. Being able to brand it as "like HDTV" allowed OEMs to pull of the biggest con in the history of computer display technology. The nice thing about 4K being the next TV buzzword is that there's no way to make a 4K display that's as bad as these 1366x768 monstrosities.

199$ smartphones do have fullHD displays...
On the contrary in many countries (Europe) under 900€ is almost impossible to find a laptop with fullhd.

What really sucks is that if you look at replacement panel prices, a full hd IPS panel is only like $20-$25 more than than the crappy standard panels. So manufacturers could sell a $230 laptop with a good screen and make the same or more profit as a $200 one with a shitty screen, but they don't for market segmentation purposes.
>>
>>52662459
because mobile devices are the future of home computing so why waste nice panels on a dead form factor like laptops now excuse me while i hang myself
>>
>>52662459

Because people keep buying them.

Also, I suspect a significant portion of non-Macbook laptop buyers are 1) technologically illiterate and/or 2) older.

Older people seem to like big screens with low resolution. Windows is still AFAIK really shitty about scaling, and most of the aforementioned people wouldn't understand how to set that option anyway.
>>
>>52664806
Nice funny anon
>>
>>52662459
Because of shit DPI scaling in most desktop applications ==> customers bitching that the letters are too small.
>>
>>52662459

WHY
>>

>Windows is still bad at DPI scaling
When are they going to get around fixing this? OSX has had great high DPI support since 2012. Maybe Windows will catch up by 2017?
>>
>>52666128
> >$500 laptop
> >1366x768 screen

Because you're buying the shittiest tier of laptops you can find. It's equivalent to a $20 phone, not a $150 phone.
>>
>>52666227
You can get a decent machine with 5th gen i3, maybe 500 GB HDD, 4 GB RAM, intel HD graphics 5000
BUT THEY STILL FUCKING SKIMP ON THE SCREEN
I dont want to pay $800+ just so that my machine has a good screen
>>
>>52666268
>5th gen i3

Shit.

> maybe 500 GB HDD

Total shit.

> 4 GB RAM

Shit.

> intel HD graphics 5000

Shit.

I'm sorry, what was your point?

>>52666268
>I dont want to pay $800+ just so that my machine has a good screen

Well too fucking bad. You think shit is supposed to be decent, when it's not. You buy pleb-tier bottom-of-the-barrel products and then whine that it doesn't have the one feature that YOU care about.

>Waaah my stripper Honda Civic doesn't have leather seats!
>>
>>52666287
I dont care about the price but why is it that only business class laptops (latitudes, elitebooks, etc) have anything more than a 768p screen?
>>
>>52662459
>1366x768
>mfw manufacturers call 768p """"HD""""
boils my blood everytime
>>
Bash apple laptops all you want, but they really helped in pushing high resolution displays and proper DPI scaling in laptops. Windows 10 still blows at DPI scaling
>>
>>52662459
Because your average normie consumer doesn't care nor knows the difference.
Ask any normie his laptop's resolution and he wont know it
>>
>>52666341
Normies only use their laptops for facebook, MS Orifice, and Netflix. They really don't care.
>>
>>52662459
Probably makes the battery last longer and allows one to read the text pretty easily without having to mess with their display settings
>>
>>52662459
>1366x768

that resolution is over 100 DPI until you go up to 16" so what's the problem.
>>
If one is buying a notebook for basic schoolwork or office tasks, then those specs are more than adequate - an i7 is not going to to make MS Word work any better than an i3.

A nice screen on the other hand, makes everything you do on a computer better. And a good screen is only slightly more expensive to make than a crappy one - maybe $20 or so more. The only reason not to offer good screens as a $50 option is artificial market segmentation.
>>
Are there any new laptops with 1366x768 screens? I would have thought they'd be gone by now
>>
>>52666558
I can see the fucking individual pixels on a 13".
>>
>>52666558
You can literally see the pixel squares, like a screen door effect. It's shitty.

You can get $200 Chromebooks with 1080 screens too.

>Shit.
intel graphics are the only ones that just work.
I don't need a powerful laptop, just something to put linux on and have ~10h battery life. The 9 years old laptop I got off facebook for 20€ does all I need but the battery life. Laptops haven't developed one bit in those years.

Also your formatting is shit, your post wastes half the screen space on a standard 1080p display.

>>
>>52666287
They're only shit if you look at them from the standpoint of someone who wants to play vidya gaems on their laptops.
If you want a portable work machine which can do some light photo editing, a bit of coding perhaps, and for multitasking those specs are more than enough.
>>
>>52666365

People spend more on their phones than laptops, and smaller high res screens are cheaper to make than larger ones.
>>
I suppose it could be that:
>phones
have cameras and the pictures should look super 'vibrant' and 'dynamic' to trick people into thinking that a 15mp camera is necessary for viewing on a shitty laptop screen that suplorts a quarter of the images resolution
>tablets
Tablets are not "tools" like actual computers are, meaning you wont be writing an essay, editing photos, writing code etc etc on them as you would on a pc/laptop. Tablets are good for 2 things that I can think of, watching movies and reading
Reading can be done on any cheap 800x600® tablet or e-book reader but its nice to have full HD resolution on a tablet as sales on tablets are dependant on 2 things, how nice they look in the store and how good they will be doing the only thing they are ultimately good for, watching 1080p videos

However anon there are literally tons of 1080p laptops for sale everywhere, at least in iceland
>>

>>52662459
easier to sell
there are tons of people who buy new phones every year because of things like that
laptops are used for work mostly, not as a fashion accessory, so things like that don't matter too much as long as they have good quality and you are able to work on them
for most consumers having a laptop is nearly pointless at this point anyway, nothing happens in that market, they are still the same colorful cheap plastic garbage designed by indians that we've had for the last at least 7 years
>>
My HP HDX 16 from 7 years ago even has a 1080p display you should just watch better
>>
>>52662459
>350$ Chromebooks have 1080p screen
>a 500$ laptop with a few dollars worth more of hardware doesn't
>if you want a 1080p screen you need to buy a $900+ laptop

You can't explain this shit without accepting that companies do this to extort more money out of you.
>>
The reality is that 1366x768 will suit the vast majority of people's needs, just like 1024x768 used to, but people fell for the 1080p meme.

They're intended to be used as browsing machines, as a result they sport better screens but lower specifications in other departments like storage, memory and CPU horsepower
>>
>>52673753
The shipping is 40€ and if after some months something goes wrong and you have to return that it can often be a pain if you bought from the other side of Europe (I might be wrong in this case though).
Also, most people, at least in Italy, and including my friends, would look at me with a disgusted face if I recommended them to buy a 700€ notebook online from UK, or Germany, or another cute state with lower prices and better notebooks.
We are pretty narrow-minded people...
