No.

Because Windows 10 exists.

For me, it is the best because I can make it a very minimal DE with little effort. On a laptop, it's all about maximizing my screen real estate.
>>
XFCE has always given me much screen tearing on everything
>>
>>52656478
it's actually quite easy to fix on any graphics configuration, on any distro:
- https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Intel_graphics#Tear-free_video (Intel)
- https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/AMD_Catalyst#Tear_Free_Rendering (AMD)
- https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA#Avoid_tearing_with_GeForce_600.2F700_series_cards (NVIDIA)
- http://duncanlock.net/blog/2013/06/07/how-to-switch-to-compton-for-beautiful-tear-free-compositing-in-xfce/ (All graphics configurations)

also, not EVERYONE gets tearing on xfce. it's always a toss-up.
>>
>>52656355
this guy gets it. highly configurable. lightweight. no fuss. dark gtk theme, minimalist icon set, shrink your panels, and you're golden. it also has great multi-monitor support, and a perfect workspace manager.

About the tearing: the included composite manager can cause tearing on some drivers but you can just install compton and and configure it yourself. Its really not that hard.

i know, i literally pointed that out in thorough, precise terms (here: >>52656793 to the other anon). also, compton is not the ideal solution, configuring your native graphics drivers is preferable (compton can't handle certain shapes, and can cause more glitches with video playback if not configured properly).

I use Xfce mostly because of how easy it is to make it look similar to OS 9. This is a pretty half-ass example in the screenshot, only takes about 10 seconds to go from default to this.

Somehow I doubt many people share my love for the OS 9 aesthetic but I like it. Just need to make an icon pack one of these days.

Ayy lmao this niggers dont know about Mate.

The package manager is decent, runs well on old hardware and boots quick as well. Documentation is lacking in case you need it and I would recommend avoiding the "flavours" and to use the base iso. Anything specific you want to know?

Maybe-unrelated questions, but since you guys are running it, might just ask:
1- Does it come with a lot of stuff you never use (like Gnome/Unity)
2- Any key xfce-specifics that are really useful?

Its on all my uni's thinclients, I kinda like the look and consistency and could use some real DE features but then I'm on i3 now without a DE and don't really want to spend a lot of GB/ram/cpu on something that only looks a bit better
>>
>>52656308

Enjoy your tearing.
>>
>>52660169
Both your questions are subjective, anyway..
1. Depends on the distro so check the packages, but it's way lighter than both of them
2. No idea, it does everything I need it to and nothing more.

I'm not going to twist your arm to use it, use whatever you want.
>>
>>52656308
Nope, it's a half baked DE. I like the way it looks but it's not usable nowadays.
>>
>>52656308
LXDE works nicely, Openbox is good. I have no need for GNOME or KDE. Because I like my DE to be simple, soft of system resources and stable, yet easy to customize to my needs. I do like Razor QT aswell, very nice but I never use it for more than 20 min at a time. But those 20 mins before it bricks my entire installation feels good
>>
>>52656308
no, xmonad is the best desktop environment
>>
Shitty multi-monitor support, not as good as other DE like GNOME and KDE
>>
>>52662418
>GNOME

They literally remove features because macs don't have them
>>
>>52658568
No need to use bloaty slow Unity when you can get a global menubar in XFCE and MATE.

https://git.javispedro.com/cgit/topmenu-gtk.git/about/
>>
>>52656308
xfce config can be tricky, and when it comes to laptops you want everything to work out of the box, so no.

MATE is very similar, and better.

Still, DE's and WM's do pretty much the same in very similar ways. Don't be picky, just get the one you like the most.
>>
>>52656308
Cinnamon, Mate, and if it weren't for the bugs, KDE, are all better than XFCE.
>>
>>52662750
Correct
>>
>>52662625
Still better than xfce who can't save and automatically use your last multi-monitor settings every time you disconnect or connect external monitor, or (if enabled) ask you which presets to use every time external monitor connected but you can't create custom preset if there's no correct choice
>>
>>52662750
mate is literally XFCE but less modular, harder to config/tweak, and more system resource intensive
Gnome 3 - classic option is better

You should change your OS (why not just Archlinux), but foremost, SELL YOUR LAPTOP AS SOON AS YOU CAN.

I've got a hp dv6 with manjaro. I don't use it anymore, but the last time I used it it made me really anxious, as a revivence of the stress I had with this computer.

Why ? Manjaro has so much bugs you're bathing in a bug field like a quark bathing in a higgs field.

And I had a white line on the left side of my screen. To minimize a light, but permanent pain while browsing the Internet or taking notes I quickly resized my windows so they were squared. And because of poor pixel density I was spending more time scrolling for anything than typing or reading something.

Try to get refunded for your computer if you can.

I prefer Gnome for my laptop. Overview and big buttons work nicely.
It's not like it plays an important role though, I'm sure I would manage just fine without whatever shitty DE/WM as long as I can alt-tab and go fullscreen.

1. I installed it over the top of MATE, and it didn't add anything
2. Nothing too specific, but I'll just say that it uses less than 300mb ram just sitting there with nothing open, so if you have an older machine or not much ram then it's a good choice.
>>
Desktop Environment-wise, I would guess so. However I would prefer to use a decent tiling manager rather than XFCE or something. I'm more accustomed to using keyboard shortcuts or commands.

Long story short: yes.
Because it's small and fast while still feeling like a full fledged and polished environment. Unlike LXDE that feels like and unfinished turn.
I'm not going to get into tiling manager because that's a whole other thing. Xfce isn't competing with that.

I just use kde on my laptop.
It is a good mix of efficient user interfaces and is very good when you only have a keyboard like on a laptop.
The window decoration is automatically hidden when I maximize an application and kwin rules are easy to set up.
I heavily rely on the calculator which means I can't really use other desktop environments as they doesn't have that.
I am not sure why I should try to move to something that does the same with a bit effort just to save 100 mb of ram.
I might try xfce one day if they find a way to integrate a calculator
