How long should "mdadm --monitor /dev/md0 --test" approximately take?
I read somewhere that it should be "quick" compared to full scan, but has been stuck for about 30 minutes.

To be honest I'm about 6 days in and almost have grub working properly. I got it to the point where it just says grub.
I've installed fedora for dual boot on my laptop
The problem is wifi doesn't work properly. Websites take forever to load and the speed varies from 1mb/s to around 60 or so when the wired connection speed is just fine at constant 100mb/s and it is stable unlike the wifi. I've tried disabling ipv6 with no luck and everything should be up to date. Yes I have used google and tried editing several config files etc.

Install Manjaro. It helps getting familiar with the linux system and it's base is Arch so you can switch with ease when you feel save enough. Also basically everything in the Arch wiki can help you to understand your system.
If you don't want to go deeper in the future and just want something that feels like windows, get Mint.

I want to run 2 seperate backup commands daily via cron, however both directories to be be compressed are fairly large, and would each take quite some time to complete (at least a couple of hours per directory.)
How can I tell cron not to run one job until the other job has already started, without guessing the time it will take to complete? Should I just split the commands on one line with a ';', or is there some cron-specific method of doing this?
Also, can I spread a command over multiple lines using a '\'?

CrunchBang++ is pretty much exactly like its predecessor, just with newer packages.
BunsenLabs is a little bit different and will presumably continue to slowly drift away from the original #!.
Also check out TweakOS. Has a similar Openbox setup and arose from the ashes of Crunchbang like the other two mentioned. Really nice look and feel, in my opinion.
There's also Crunchbang Monara, but I haven't tried it so can't comment.

I need some help guys. Recently I've been playing around in the config file for lightdm. Today, when I tried to log in, lightdm wouldn't load. I eventually discovered it was because of a flaw in my typing when I designated the greeter in the config file. Now lightdm seems to be working, but when I try to log in, the screen just flashes and goes back to lightdm. I've tried multiple user accounts and multiple window managers. None of them work. I first wiped one of the 4TB drives so that I can transfer both of my 2TB drives to it. Everything went fine. Now I'm copying the contents of that very same drive back to itself, but with ext4.
I did fdisk /dev/sd<letternumber goes here>, deleted the partitions, made a GDT, made a new partition, and closed fdisk. Then I just used mkfs -t ext4 and carried on. Did I do something wrong?

I just made a digital ocean VPS, and I am having some trouble with SSH and logging in.

So, when I am using my desktop and SSH to the server it connects without asking for a password.
However, I wanted to do the same thing with my laptop. But I can't add the SSH key from there because no matter what I do I cannot log in as root.
I thought for some reason it did Step 6 automatically. But I checked, and PermitRootLogin is still set to 'yes.'
So, why can't I log in on another computer?

Hi /flt/, I just purchased a Thinkpad X220 and I'm looking forward to installing Linux on it. I'm thinking of going with Debian first, and the fact that the pasta now includes a ricing script for Debian is only cementing my decision. My question is, what version of Debian should I use? Does it matter? I'd prefer if it didn't require a network connection to install, but I can do it if it's necessary. Or should I write the OS to a USB and boot from that first? My understanding is that Debian can't fully boot from USB and needs to download software from the internet first, or at least, that's what I remember happening when I tried to boot from USB on a different computer.

Using arch and trying to get the numix icon theme. I installed it from the aur using yaourt and it's installed, but when I go to settings appearance (using xfce) its in the list, but its like the theme isnt installed. It's jsut the generic icons. I'm new to bash scripting but the following bash script prompts you for Artist and Song name. Then it checks Google, fetches the first URL it finds, removes HTML tags (using code from sed1line.txt), replaces " with ", and saves the page as a text file, and displays it in a terminal with the less switch (page up, page down, q to exit).
More editing would be needed to the saved text file to show just the lyrics and not other crap on the page (although some site-specific rules could be made, using grep to identify a site, and sed to remove stuff).

Writing systemd hooks doesn't seem to do anything (it doesn't lock the screen, just goes straight to sleep) and nothing of note shows up on dmesg.
I *can* manually lock and sleep by running "i3lock & sleep" but I'd rather have it triggered automatically by lidclose.

Just fyi, .font is used to set non XFT font strings (the stuff you get when you use xfontsel).
If you want to use a bitmap font like lemon, tewi, etc, you must use .font instead of .fontName to set that font.
Your issue was: .font was set after .fontName so .fontName was ignored.
