Why does Australia have slow Internet connections if the Internet fiber cables under the ocean work at the same speed and freuqnecy regardless of the distance?
>>
Because the infrastructure to homes is utter shit.

I have this at home and full fat NBN at work.

Internetting at home is suffering.

Twice my area has gone into "build preparation" on the NBN map and slipped back into "not available" after a while.

Thanks Tone, thanks Mal

Depends on the area you are in really as to what you have access to. Most city suburbs and outer areas have adsl2+ and HFC, but most people just go for adsl2+ because they probably aren't aware they have hfc access, or because its generally cheaper and unlimited plans are available, unlike cable which is quota-based.
>>
1. It costs a fuck-lot to spread the cables all over the country. The Infrastructure is a nightmare to establish.
2. Australia is a shithole.
4. The cable companies there are worse than US, worse than Verizon/WB/AT&T/Comcast. Australia is basically a testing ground for these companies in order to test the waters of how much bullshit they can throw into the mouths of their customers.
5. Australia is a shithole.
6. The copyright alliance which is trying to use piracy/copyright infringement as a smokescreen to take control of the Internet, China style, for corporations and the Western Governments that are bought up by the corporations. Ergo it creates a global precedent with Australia and part of the controlling mechanism is limiting the Internet speed of all civilians in collusion with cable companies (who also have copyright obsession as you can see in the case of them fucking up Netflix and shit).
7. Australia is a shithole.
8. NZ is the shit coming from the shithole.

Because in Australia instead of homes being connected by fibre or copper, >95% of homes are either connected with those thin aluminium packets that pop tarts come in, others have a bogan who runs back and forth with HTML scribbled on little pieces of cardboard.

The speed is consistent through just about all times of day, only downside is quota, but with 1TB a month it's pretty reasonable and beats the 250/350gb cap that some US isp's have been implementing.

Why didn't they just tax the mines?

In a word: Telstra.

It's the old "shitty government-granted last mile monopoly with no competition" problem, in a way which is worse than the local monopolies which plague the US.

Sure .au is big, but it's also heavily clustered around the coast. The reason for the shitty bandwidth and high bandwidth costs is 100% Telstra, who won't peer with anyone at cost and have the most expensive wholesale bandwidth in the world.

It doesn't look like the politicians there intend to do anything about it.

Finns are more spread out geographically than Australians with ice and snow added on top yet still managed to get 100mbit internet to every citizen.

Just goes to show that American style capitalism doesn't care about people at fucking all.
