ahoy /g/ what's up with people having over 16gb of ram?

ahoy /g/
what's up with people having over 16gb of ram?
Does one generally need more than 16?
Also virtual box isn't a good enough reason

If I can afford it I'll fucking buy it, and I don't give a fuck.

I make frequent use of VMs at work, have 32gb but rarely break 16gb used.

Faggots with more than 16 not using VMs seriously are just wasting money because they fall for advertising. Low impulse control. Weak humans.
>>
>>52644323
its also useful for video editing/rendering with a workstation computer turned gaming computer

What's the best choice for 16gb RAM?
1x16, 2x8 or 4x4?
>>
>>52644774
if you never plan to upgrade, 4x4 because of the slightly increased bandwidth.
>>
>>52644774
I feel like 2x8 will probably the best for price/gb
>>
>>52644323
vmware ;)

but seriously, I used to run several VMs at a time. 8 wasn't cutting it, and 16 was on sale, so now I have 24

And I don't run vms much anymore. I don't even play games. Typical usage is ~3gb

Sue me
>>
id probably just buy 64 and be done with it
ram is reusable and rarely dies unless you put it through hell
i use laptops anyway, 512mb is working fine f or me with suckless software

I literally remember not even 10 years ago we were arguing that you'd almost never need more than 4.
The answer to the question "When will you ever use X much Y" is always "Very fucking soon"
>>
lol just get what you need.
You want it just buy it.
>>52644800
Ineed it is and it also doen't limit you on from factor but its up to you.
>>52644774
heres a brake down
4x4 for high bandwigh but you can't upgrade

2x8 for meduim bandwigh its like upgradeable but upgrades in the future will be limited.

1x16 just one stick of ram as maxuim allowance for upgrades if your not going to upgrade for ages and ages its also low bandwigh but not too low.
>>
>>52644967
Btw just expanding on this i recently saw 2x32GB ram going for $780 NZD

crazy ,no single app in the world could max it out until your running a home flash sever

I hate gaymer shit but that actually looks pretty good

I have 8 GB RAM and an SSD
I don't need more.
>>
>>52644323

Virtualisation is a legitimate reason.
Also media encoding, rending, media editing, running servers, ...

Just because YOU don't have a need doesn't mean that other don't have a need to have more system resources.

i just bought a 32gb kit to replace my 16gb kit.

I have 32GB. I never use all 32 except when rendering short clips to put on Steam/4chan or transcoding music and videos. Virtual machines don't use that much memory since modern operating systems are pretty efficient. At one point I had BF4, VirtualBox, Visual Studio, NetBeans, and MATLAB all open at once and was only at about 16GB. Still more than enough leftover for lots of activities.
>>
>>52645092
What servers are you running that require 32 GB RAM?
Game servers do not count.
>>
>>52644323
my programs sometimes crash because not enough ram. i have 8GB and no pagefile.
>>

No /single/ app. Since when do we run ONLY one thing at a time? This isn't the era of mainframes anymore (though they still exist for those airline fuckers).

>>
world of warcraft uses a little over 2gb of ram
firefox uses about 2 - 3gb of ram
windows uses about 1.5 - 2gb of ram

right there hitting about 6 - 7gb of ram.

8gb isn't enough unless all you do is use your computer for shitposting.
>>
Lol. Fuck MATLAB.

I am using VMWare Workstation to simulate 5 Microsoft Winders 2012 Servers
2 running AD for separate domains, 2 running Exchange server and 1 acting as a RRAS server.

Between these servers are IPFire (sue me) firewalls which are connected to a GNS3 (Dynamips) network topology for semi-real internetwork simulation.

The overall goal in this exercise is to simulate the transfer of E-Mail between desktop clients on separate domains and networks.

Why? To learn the systems for accreditation.
>>
>>52645133
Also.... I require more than 32GB RAM for some setups.
>>
>>52645104
fug now i wish NZ had USD now i have to pay 2 -1/3 more for that same thing

Fug , jelly as anon.

>>52645092
>media editing, running servers,
they don't really need more than 16GB and depends on your user base and resolutions

Unless you have like 24 users accessing a thin cleints on one server that want 8k display for presentations the demand isn't there buddy.

>>52645168
be gentle young fag, oldfag here

I load a ton of protein structures into memory at one time, 32gb is tight a lot of the time so I have to break the analysis up into chunks, which is annoying

>8gb isn't enough unless all you do is use your computer for shitposting.
You can easily complete the studies for a computer science PhD with 2 GB RAM.

my IDE takes up 1.8GB alone, not to mention I feed my code to TeX, which is another behemoth

lemme guess, you do everything in vim? you're the 'genius' in class that never gets any of his code written because you are doing constant rebinds
>>
>>52644323
Only have 16 at work and regularly end up paging out on complex projects, bring it home and I hardly ever have that problem on 32, so things are much faster despite having basically the same CPU.
>>
>>52645584
>ide

I mean I don't like vim either but shit even Atom doesn't use that much. An atom window is usually around 2-300mb for me with 10-15 tabs open inside.

I use 4x4 and if I ever feel the need to get more I'll just buy a new kit and put the old one in a different pc. Because as of right I only at max at 61% and i have only done that a few times
>>
>>52644774
Unless you're on a platform that supports quad channel memory, 2x8 is by far the best choice. Having all four RAM slots filled generally limits overclock potential, since your memory controller is having to work harder by default. I've never, ever been able to get my 4x4 kit to even POST at 2400MHz with all four DIMMs inserted, yet if I remove two it'll run 2400MHz just fine.
>>
I would be fine with 16gb of RAM. But after effects is a whore for RAM. Pretty much the only reason I have 20gb :)

VMs

Also I load my server up with RAM so it can read cache tons of stuff. Also I record uncompressed video to it, so having a huge write buffer can help if something else is sucking up bandwidth on the array I'm recording to.

Statistics/machine learning for me. RAM is cheap anyway. Don't know why people try to get just enough when software eats more RAM each passing year.

well you don't particulary need it, but it's very convinient. also it's dirt cheap so you might aswell buy extra rather than just barely enough

compiling, rendering, caching. hell, I even download all my chinese cartoons and movies to tmpfs

>>

>>
>>52650429
Yeah but Windows caches less in general then, if you have 16 or 32GB more is cached in your RAM memory and it's a faster experience
>>
16GB 4x4 master race here.

8 slots on my board because true quad channel DDR4.

Even using VM I haven't peaked 16GB. Barely break 8 during most gaming sessions.

For right now and the next ~8 years the average user won't need more than 16GB. Gaming may potentially break that cap by then with new technology and lighting technology, specifically refraction inside skin pores. But otherwise no. You don't need more, stop falling for the hype.

Everyone who designs software is going to be trying to find new ways to use available RAM in a year or two. 16GB kits are becoming common, 32GB and 64GB kits for consumer machines are available, and some manufacturers will be producing 128GB DIMMs with 3D stacked DRAM slices. The enterprise market will have the luxury of seeing them first, but everything always trickles down to the consumer.
There are some kits right now with 3200mhz chips and flat CL14 timings, 3600mhz kits at CL16 flat. We'll see 4000mhz CL18 kits by middle of the year, and even in dual channel configuration thats 64GB/s bandwidth with lower latency than any memory prior. Even 32GB of that is absolutely immense, yet 128GB+ is right around the corner.

Operating systems might start building RAMdisks by default.
