VLC web plugin might work, haven't tried it though. You can also try dragging the webm thumbnail or link to your video players dock icon which is kind of tedious but ok if you don't watch that many webms.

update to 10.11.3, chrome now has access to the Metal API and is a little better on battery.

unfortunately still no webm support afaik
