Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>They’re really cheap when you buy a used one.
>Keyboards feel excellent while typing (yes, even the newer ones).
>Great durability thanks to the inclusion of rollcages and use of glass fiber reinforced plastic for the chassis. The keyboard is splash proof and spilled liquids will drain out.
>Utilitarian design - e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking solutions that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for almost every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing on the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

I have a x220 tablet with Windows 10 (I need it for school so please don't go off topic about me running Windows).

My question is, what do I need to install in order to customize what the button on my digitizer pen does?
Right now it right clicks and I can't find and settings to change it under pen and touch or tablet pc settings.

Also my trackpad is very jittery, and I normally don't use it but I would like to fix this problem. I can hold my finger still on the trackpad and it jerks and jumps all over the place. I tried installing lenovo ultranav drivers but it didn't change anything.

I'm thinking of purchasing either a T420 or a T61p to do simple work (word processing) and watch videos. I already have a desktop, but I'd like a laptop to do such things in the comfort of my bed (I have scoliosis and hate having to sit for so long). The reason I am going Thinkpad is because /tpg/ sold me on the keyboard, durability, modifiability and overall practical design.

The T61p has a nicer resolution and has cheaper listings on ebay, but it seems the screen is dimmer (I imagine I can just purchase a new CCFL).

If I do end up going for the T420, I will probably end up replacing the screen with a 1080p version.

So which should I get? Is there a different model more suited to me?

Hello Thinkfriends! Still waiting for my W550s to ship, looks like it won't get here until next week >:C

In the meantime, have some fun reading I discovered: https://web.archive.org/web/20090213045829/http://wwwcssrv.almaden.ibm.com/trackpoint/files/nonoise.html

In short, have you ever noticed that your Trackpoint can drift a bit after taking your finger off it? I always had that issue and after reading this page I see why. When I use the mouse while reading a web page I keep my finger on the clit for a fairly long time, often highlighting text and so on. Once I stop using it I see a bit of drift for a few seconds, then it stops. Interesting to see exactly what makes that tick.

Should I swallow the linux pill and convert from windows?

Why not dual boot to start with and see how you like it?

As usual, the Arch wiki has some helpful info that can likely be generalized to other distros/machines: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Lenovo_ThinkPad_T420

I don't use either feature on my Thinkpads so I can't be any more help, I'm afraid
>>

In regards to the T61p and faulty Nvidia GPUs, I thought that was only a particular batch. As in if a specific laptop was manufactured at a certain time, the failure rate would be in an acceptable range.

How the fuck do I disable PXE boot on my x220? I'm getting sick of waiting for 5-10 sec for it to realize there is no server only to tell me that it failed and continue normal booting.

Tried pressing ctrl-s at the prompt before and set it to disabled. That only took away the prompt, it still tries to find a server.
Tried putting my HDD above the PCI LAN card in the boot priority, it still tries to do it's thing.

What else?
>>
>>52643549
That's true, but the flaws with the GPU's were only discovered to be a large scale problem near the end of the production cycle

Most of the T61p's out there have the problem, only ones made toward the end of the manufacturing cycle have it solved, the ones with faulty GPU's are much more common

4GB DDR3 @ 1033MHz I believe
14.1" 1600x900 resolution
320GB 7200rpm hdd
DVD-RW

How good of a deal did I get?

I would have liked a 15.4" screen and a little bit of dedicated graphics but I don't game that much anymore anyway. Every laptop with a 15.4" screen under $200 was 1366x768 so I went with the higher res since I'll be up close.

>Thinkvantage button
There are various ways to set a keybinding, some easier than others depending on your distro. I just figured how to make it open a terminal with Openbox with my classic kbd swapped x230 (may apply to the x220 too FAIK). Just add this to the rc.xml in the keyboard section:

<!-- Keybinding for Thinkvantage button -->
<keybind key="0x9C"> # Thinkvantage
<action name="Execute">
<startupnotify>
<enabled>true</enabled>
<name>Terminal</name>
</startupnotify>
<command>x-terminal-emulator</command>

Simple enough, too. For debian- or ubuntu-based, just install the frpintd package and then run fprintd-enroll.

Is it possible to do something like this on the T450s to give me 2 SSD/HDD slots?
>>

It does, especially if you only have integrated graphics.

Integrated graphics uses your RAM as VRAM.

Using more memory in dual channel gave me ~10% graphics performance boost on my T530 with integrated graphics.

You could easily buy an X201, upgrade the ram, stick an SSD into it, and buy an ultrabay caddy for the original HDD for the same money or less

is there any reason other than the display size to get a t420 over a x220?
>>
>>52645372
The T4*0 series are usually thicker and heavier, but also more expandable in terms of batteries.

The T4*0s series are thinner and slightly lighter, with some compromises that some people may think is not worth it.
>>
>>52646373
no
>>
>>52646373
>>52646349
Not really, if you want a lightweight laptop, the X220 is probably your best bet

The T420 you're looking at is also the kneecapped S model, which trades savings in weight for slightly gimped performance, the X series also likely has better battery life

The only real advantage the T420s has is that it can have an ultrabay thing installed, but externals are so cheap now that isn't really much of an advantage
>>
>>52646437
i do want something smaller. i just want to throw linux on there as something to tinker with. i need a new hobby.
>>
>>52642143
Looks like 1080p on a T420 isn't quite doable, and the T61p is both too dim and has a potentially faulty GPU. I think I'll settle for a T520 and purchase a 1080p LCD screen to go with it.
>>
>>52646437
The x220 is like two inches thick tho

It's like a bible. The other one is like half an inch thick
>>
>>52642143
What is the point of its keyboard and durability if you want to just do word processing and watch videos. Thinkpads are terrible for that. They are big, loud, shit battery life, and heavy.

Just get a chromebook. There are $300 1080p IPS ones.
>>
>>52643570
T520 1080p.
Or x220 IPS.
>>
>>52646657
I hear Thinkpad keyboards feel great (I'm also curious about the benefits of trackpoint), and I always use headphones. I'm not too mobile so weight doesn't matter as much, andI do know that I am prone to dropping or spilling.
>>
>>52646108
Never buy a thinkpad from anywhere but ebay or CG. They rip you off. Just like the bestbuy link you posted.
>>
>>52646691
Yeah they do feel great. But they are not some god keyboard. If you compare it to other notebooks, yes it will feel better and you will like it better. But it is not life changing.

And if you are buying a thinkpad due to your spilling liquid habit than fine, but I feel like you should just not spill liquid on your electronics.

I have a T420, and a T440. Both great machines. But the chromebook (TCB2) is the ultimate couch surfing, youtube bed watching, netflix streaming, /g/ shitposting, porn-watching, machine.
>>
I picked up a T420 and I noticed that when I watch any sort of video on it that the upper half of the screen gets this "chopping" effect. Is there anything I can do to fix that or is it just a hardware limitation?
>>
>>52646831
Post a picture.
Go to an external display and test it out.
Otherwise, replace the screen.
>>
>>52643570
>Which model

I just bought a T420 i5 with the 1600x900 screen. It's a fairly high pixel density for the size. I like it, but it certainly looks like shit compared to the Samsung LPS screen I have on my desktop.

If I were doing it over, I would probably save a couple bucks with the shitty 1366x768 (or whatever it is) lower-tier screen, then get one of those screen conversions that are being sold via ebay now. I think they run about $100 for the whole package. IIRC that would get you 1080p IPS, but I'm not sure if the T420 version has all the bugs worked out. They're definitely available for the T420s.

Also, I'll probably replace my i5 with a $100-ish i7 (2720QM, I think?).

So basically, buy the cheapest T420 and upgrade it.

Everyone who ever bought an i7 and added 4 gigs of RAM thinks it's magically worth $400 more.
>>
What battery should i get for my T420? Chinese or an official replacement?
>>
>>52646757
I'm not a chromebook guy, but if by TCB2 you mean Toshiba Chromebook 2, then I've gotta say that quite frankly that keyboard and trackpad look like shit.

And as I said in my original post, I'm excited by how much I can customise the hardware. Judging by looks, I don't think I can quite do that with the TCB2. The T520 I'm planning on purchasing is a $50 premium, but I think it'll be worth it.

The Ctrl-S or Ctrl-P menu doesn't let you change anything.

Oh, and if you're running Windows >= Win 8, make sure to select 'reboot' from the Start Menu to get it to do a full shutdown, otherwise you can't access the BIOS since it will just do that hybrid sleep psudo-shutdown thing.

The chromebook has good speakers and a great screen. It is a media machine. It has a baytrail celeron.

Thinkpad has a shit screen, and shit speakers. It is a work machine, not a media machine. You do not watch movies on a thinkpad. It just sucks. Shit colors, shit viewing angles, shit brightness.

The main thing of thinkpad vs chromebook is the screen. And the screen is important for media pleasure, but not for business presentations. Hence the lack of lenovo's emphasis on high-quality screens.

I'm looking at buying a Lenovo Thinkpad 11e for a lightweight productivity laptop, but I'm noticing a disturbing lack of info about the different types of 11e apparently available.

Lenovo themselves have these models: http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/thinkpad/11e-series/11e-windows/

Both of which are Windows machines.

But on Newegg and Amazon, I'm seeing models that are Chromebooks, with different storage specs: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA24G3FG8076&cm_re=lenovo_thinkpad_11e-_-34-318-653-_-Product

Did they just rip out the HDD and replace it with an eMMC SSD at 16gb? Is the eMMC SSD in an mSATA port somewhere in the laptop? What's going on here?

I think its ridiculous that W500's are still being sold around $200 from time to time.

>>52645372
T450s is just a slim version of the T450, but it uses a different battery layout.
Also they are all ultrabooks now, supposedly.

Both use an ultra low voltage processor, 's' models have their CPU soldier (due to small design, X series are all soldiered)

The 'p' model has a normal voltage processor and can be upgraded.

This applies to all T440, T450, T460 units, on the T430 and prior, they had normal removable processors till haslel happened.
>>
>>52640008
>Recommended models:

I think I have an answer - if soldered on eMMC doesn't require a cable (why should it?) then yes, the 11e student edition will have an "SSD cable" according to this teardown vid: https://youtu.be/cS5gPGeqzMA?t=7m30s

That means you could add an internal SSD or HDD to the thing and get the 16gb eMMC to boot; the only downside would be you'd be stuck on 4gb of RAM soldered to the board, with no upgrade slot. An interesting tradeoff...

T520, maybe T510 if you can't find a T520 with a good screen in your price range. Smaller Thinkpads have vastly inferior screens to what the 15" models offer.
>>
>>52652673
The 2 seperate monitors aren't running off the thinkpad, they're hooked up to my desktop I built.

Only problem I've had with Win 10 is lack of documentation for drivers and what not, but I got it all sorted.

One problem I've had though is I can't get the accelerometer to control screen rotation, but it's not a big problem because there is a dedicated button on the screen for that. I did get it to work for a little bit by installing Thinkvantage Active Protection which supposedly enables the accelerometer to stop your HDD from spinning if you were to drop the laptop, but it stopped working and also made the HDD make an annoying noise every time I moved the laptop so I just uninstalled it and have been using the button.

The 900p screen is still complete shit on T420, though.
Sure, the resolution is there, but you're still dealing with a contrast ratio that's been measured to 162:1. T420's screen is complete fucking shit regardless of which one you get, unless you go out of your way to get a custom screen in there.

The difference between a T520's factory 900p screen and T420's factory 900p screen is ridiculous, and there's an even bigger difference if you look at a T520 with the factory 1080p screen which is nearly on the same level as an IPS panel.

T420's screen is just a steaming pile of shit.

Just lol at the seller and lowball them though.

Do the T530's have a problem with overheating? I'll get either T420 or T520 if they do.
>>
>>52654121
Of course, I was just going for low- or no-cost solutions.

That's nowhere close to overheating. The components are good out to ~100C.

Those are surface temperatures retard

Nevermind, the T420 or T520 do not have USB 3.0. Is the T530 worth buying?

That's what I found in the review. But they used a stress test application to reach those temperatures.

Jesus Christ how horrifying. My T520 maxes out at 75C under full load.

I would get a T520 but it doesn't have USB 3.0.

That feel when you just bought a mid-specced, (to be replaced) TN-panel, T450S, used six months by some businessfag, for only $1000 even though the new series is supposedly released tomorrow.

For the record, I haven't seen a single ad for used T450S aside from this one, in this country. Plenty of Gen 3 X1 Carbons for like $700 though. Don't really want one of those though because I want double SSDs, extended battery life, and deeper key travel. Thinking about selling that T450S ASAP though, and getting a new X260 instead, maybe. Should I? It doesn't have dat dere deep travel, but otherwise it's superior to my machine.

W520 does.

You can just disable Turbo Boost and you'll never have to worry about reaching those temperatures.

What's the best GPU to put in the Advanced Dock? I'm looking at a GT 730, but if there's a better option I'm all for it.
