If you plan to get further into this hobby after your first keyboard, either reds or browns should be fine (I recommend reds since browns just feel like muddy linears) just to give you a taste of mechanical keyboards.

If you want to get a keyboard and be done with it for the next three years, get a switch tester (or two for a larger range) and find the one that appeals to you the most. Then import a keyboard from wherever you can find it and suck up the import tax and whatever. Make sure to get something with a standard layout (e. g. no gaymen bottom row) and that you're sure of you won't grow to dislike with time (e. g. a fullsize and then you realize a TKL would suit you better).

Either way, if you want to eventually upgrade from your first keyboard you'll probably have to suck it up and deal with import tax. Or get a seller who's willing to declare it as an 18 bucks keyboard.

See, what I don't understand is the fact the EU is a huge market and yet no one has really set up a decent mech kb store with reasonable prices over here yet.
>>
>>52638020
It's not really that huge of a market when you consider how much of a niche hobby mechanical keyboards are.

Though I'd love to actually own a store in which I'd sell keyboards and do keyboard services and tell customers about which keyboard is suited the best for their needs and budget. That'd be amazing.
>>
>>52638054
>tfw can't milk neetbux by selling overpriced keyboards and caps

Also, I guess one of the problems is the fact there's so many layouts in the EU you'd need to stock

Is there anything more comfy than wearing tights and writing feminine spaghatti code all afternoon?
>>
>>52637957
I'll be the counterpoint and say that I despise reds for either typing or gaming. A switch tester is worth it if you don't know what you're doing IMO, it's a lot cheaper than buying a keyboard you don't like at $70 than figuring out which one you do like for an extra $15-20

Looking for my first mech. Was thinking about something with MX Clears (e.g. CODE) but by the time it arrives it's going to cost a hell of a lot.

I am currently split for getting the TKL w/ Clears or going for something a little more unique like the Matias Mini Quiet Pro.

Does anyone have experience with them?
>>
>>52638091
You'd also have to make the entire store in multiple languages if you'd want much traction. Sure, a significant portion of Europe speaks or at least understands English, but the germans and french, for example, generally only know basics if that(although the target market would probably have higher rate of being good at English).
>>
>>52638222
I'm sure you'll like them on your keyboard, it's just that there are better options in terms of switches.

Yes, just make sure the modifier keys are all standard sizes otherwise an aftermarket set won't fit.

Someone clearly didn't do their research.
No, not all mechanical keyboards use cherry switches. Look at different keyboards before you buy. There are other companies besides cherry, but cherry makes the best. And aftermarket keycaps will fit if they are designed to cherry switches.

Reminder that it's a good idea to back out of Granite now.
The keys are too inconsistent for the price, and if you really want to get a set, they're going to start showing up on the marketplace more and more as the April 18th deadline approaches. Everybody with a Granite set is going to start worrying that their kit is going to lose value, and you won't have any problem finding a set.
On the other hand, you can spend $150, wait for at least 3 months, receive at least half of a defective set, send them back, wait another month, and then possibly have a complete accurate set.
I have 8 kits in my cart right now, deciding it's not worth it. Going to spend the money on something newer and more interesting.
This is especially true if you were purchasing the 'Text' set rather than the 'Icon'.
>>
>>52642460

conceptually, i feel like if you're gonna include a navigation cluster in your 60% board, 4 keys is almost as useless as having no keys at all

in practice, I feel like this board was conceived as nothing more than massdrop bait because it's a compromise 60% board that excels in nothing, and it's price reflects that

>>
>>52643885
A single row of numbers is harder to find position on when doing dedicated number input. It would be one thing if there were homing keys or some such, but there aren't. The tenkey is laid out in a format that is very easy to muscle-memorise, with the added benefit of being one-handed.
>>
>>52643702
It's hardly massdrop bait considering the layout was already implemented by Varmilo and Magicforce copied it (whoever that is). It's been for sale in China, the guys at MD just managed to arrange a group buy. It's not as if the board was designed for massdrop buyers.
And the point of the 68 key layout is that it copies Leopold's FC660 layout but maintains a fully standard 2.75u L-Shift so any keycap set can work on it. The 4 key cluster is just to there to fill in the space, otherwise it'd be blank.
This layout is absolutely perfect for anyone who ever thought "I want a TKL, but I don't need the F row, and I want to keep the arrow keys." (like me)
>>
>>52643993
>"I want a TKL, but I don't need the F row, and I want to keep the arrow keys." (like me)
literally nobody has ever thought that

people buy 60% keyboards for aesthetics or because they carry their keyboards in their bags and a normal TKL is too big for them.

Cherry's moulds are old and worn out, causing stems to have a rougher texture. This is the same for all switches, but it is especially noticeable for linears. If you want a smooth linear Cherry, you should go for Gateron instead.

There was some idiot who brought a mechanical keyboard into my English class a few years ago during the final. He pissed off nearly everybody for a good five minutes before the teacher made him hand-write the exam. It was one of those boards with a hollow plastic case, so the whole thing sounded so pingy and acoustic. It's been years and I still remember what an idiot he was.

Basically, I'd suggest against doing it, unless you're trying to do one of those "prank" videos or something.

I'm really considering getting this Ganss G.S 87, a Filco/Noppoo rip off with cherry switches, and looks much better than CM Quickfires in that price range
>>
>fedoras for your fingers
>>
>>52645761
it's a filco clone
it has nothing to do with noppoo unless noppoo also made a filco clone that i'm not aware of

also pls be aware that CM quickfire is literally a filco rebrand with gamer styling and a detachable cable
>>
>>52645758
What's that?
I can't hear your mumble-mumbles over the sound me bottoming out my mx reds at maximum speed
>>
>>52645788
So is it worth spending $10-20 more on a CM?
>>
>>52645811
the only cheap QFR is the blue switch model.
all the other switches are so overpriced you may as well buy a real filco for $30 more.

if you want non-blue cherry switches for cheap, just get the ganss
>>
>>52645844
I was looking at the Brown MX, and the CM Browns are like $80 for the cheapest one.

I really like the look of the Ganss, and reviews say its heavy as fuck, which is honestly what I care about. A sturdy mech i can pound on and still call my special bb
Keycaps seem like shit, but i'll be replacing them anyway
>>
>>52645890
i'd say go for it
i just ordered one after backing out from the magicforce drop because it was the same price and looked much sturdier than any floating key 60% gamer board
>>
>>52645890
Based on everything I have read on here and in the reviews it seems like the ganss keyboards are the best value right now. If you dont like the keycaps then you can always end up replacing them. I might just get brown switches myself and eventually get granite caps for a more hollow thock
>>
>>52646002
This will be my first TKL as well as my first non-backlit kb, so i'm pretty excited.
I just wish there was more people who talked about the Ganss, because I like to autistically research my product before buying.
>>
>>52646065
i went looking through chinese hardware blogs and everyone's saying the same things mentioned in reviews from westerners, their only complaint is the lazy pad printed ABS caps
>>
>>52646194
Can someone explain if this is truly a big deal whatsoever? I mean we are talking about a price point that beats out the rest of the competition and the product seems to mirror much higher in price ones
>>
>>52646219
It really isn't.
Hardly anyone keeps the stock caps on their keyboards unless it's obscenely expensive and you're paying for the design, like in the case of topre realforce and hhkb.
>>
>>52646219
I would like to know this also...
What makes a Filco Majestouch worth $200? It looks the exact same as the Ganss, the Ganss might be heavier, and even the lip of the keyboard around the arrow keys looks the same. Are you paying for the Filco name? If that's all, then FUCK that
>>
>>52646267
i don't even like filco, but it kinda rubs me the wrong way to see over-entitled kids holding companies in contempt simply because chinese clones of products are cheaper than the original hardware they're based on
>>
>>52644473
just remove the circuit path and connect the soldering points it connected with a wire
>>
>>52646384
You're talking about mechanical keyboards here, one of the biggest rip off products in the world. HHKB? Das Keyboard?
I'm all for successful knock-offs at that point, when its the same quality switches, a slightly different case, and 25% the price
>>
Anyone know why the Realforce 108UH and 91U are so cheap on Amazon right now? I can't tell if they're scam sales or if one of these sellers just got a large shipment from Japan.
It's rare to see a TKL Realforce for under 200 bucks. I'm not a huge fan of Topre or anything, but I'm pretty tempted

It's not. For some reason, white piggus need to pay that much, while in other sensible parts of the world, it only costs about 110 USD.

Filco keyboards are well built, but they're not worth over 140 USD.

I got my Coolermaster Storm Novatouch with the supposedly Topre switches. I'm liking it for the most part.

I still think the Kinesis Classic I've been using for years is a superior layout, but it's kind of nice to get reacquainted with a traditional layout. I have no idea how people deal with the HHKB type layouts.

>I don't think they exist.
I own a JIS 108UW HiPro 10th anniversary mod, and I know the 108UH exists, but it's normally a HiPro from what I understand. The one linked doesn't look like a HiPro from the picture listed, but it also doesn't look fake. I'm guessing they sold the original caps since the HiPros can be expensive, but I'm only guessing.
It's pretty weird for them to be listed at such a low price, though.
>>
>>52646776
importing stuff isn't cheap
higher prices outside of their home country is pretty much a given unless the company also has a local branch in your country
>>
>>52646876
For the 91U I'm seeing the price as $210.99 which is normal for a realforce 87 or 91 (from EK).
The 108UH does seem rather cheap though. Is it even possibly to use normal caps on a hipro? I thought it could only go the other way around.
>>
>>52646899
I know you can swap the caps, but you'd normally swap the switch assembly. There's a good writeup about it on GH somewhere.
Anyway, as far as I can tell, it shouldn't be impossible to swap the switch assembly to put regular caps on a HiPro board.
>>
What is a nice 60% keyboard that doesn't have an incredible markup when buying in the EU?
>>
>>52647083
GH60 or KC60. Easily the best 60% board, but it always manages to sell below $100 US, and the Satin version is popular in the EU.
The only downside is the plastic case (if you buy it pre-built) that has too much hollow space underneath. It makes the board loud and obnoxious, but it's easily fixed by replacing it with an aluminium case or a flat case.
It's fully programmable and can do pretty much whatever you want it to do. The only layout it doesn't seem to support is JIS.

The last (x)60 I bought was the KC60 from Massdrop for something like 70 bucks. You really can't get a better deal than that for a higher quality board.

>>
>>52647459

I have several Kinesis Classic keyboard. I put red switches in one of them. I can say this: reds pretty much feel the same as well broken-in browns.

I'm the guy currently typing on a CM Storm Novatouch. It has Topre switches. They'll live longer than I will, but they do feel sort of 'mushy' compared to the Cherry MX switches I've been typing on for years.

If I were you, I'd probably buy a CM Storm original version (no dumb light-up features) and see how I like the Cherry switches. I'd start with Cherry Browns, too, since that's just a great all-around baseline.

No prob. Your best bet is going to be ordering a kit or the PCB, or try your hand at buying one from from the DT/GH market.
If you don't want to deal with that, you can wait around for a GB. There always seems to be a GB for something or another using the GH60 clone PCBs. Even the clones are decent, though I don't think the Satan version has the same pinouts as the regular Rev B. It should still support things like an external numpad or RGB lighting.

One question: Why?

Why mess with multiple fn keys and shift when you can use a normal keyboard and get all the same scancodes without all the fn fuckery?

This doesn't look very convenient to use. And if you're going to go with such a radically different layout, why not go all the way and make it dvorak, or a pure chord keyboard?
>>
>>52647594
>why not go all the way and make it dvorak
dvorak only optimizes letters based on frequency in english language.

Dvorak is a waste of time. So is Colemak.

Actually moving key positions (like the Kinesis keyboards) has a vastly higher payoff for time invested.
