Intended for users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are four ways to try Linux, you can:

1) Install a Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
2) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full Linux experience".
3) Dual-boot Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about Linux)
4) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with Linux (not recommended)

Before asking, please find the answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe wine can make up for it.

Ok, so what if I went ball sacks deep and just overwrote Windows with a Fedora installation? Would I be stuck with same retarded errors, like 'create an uefi partition at /boot/efi' and 'unable to allocate space' etc. Ie. the obstacles I stumbled upon when trying to install it for dual booting. Or would the installation go smoothly, since it would wipe or reformat the whole hard drive?

>>

How would I install it in legacy mode?
>>
>>52638160
uefi/bios settings
>>
>>52638081
There are a bunch of things to unpack, but essentially:

If you're getting "create an UEFI partition", then overwriting Windows wouldn't fix that problem.

The bigger issue is with "unable to allocate space". I'm guessing you're also >>52633056, in which case, the problem is that you need at least 512MB for /boot/efi.
>>
>>52638206
When I managed to install it before, i had /boot/efi with just 200MB of space. Would it even let me create a partition if its not large enough?
>>
>>52638299
It would probably throw a warning. And yeah, 200MB could work, too. I was just trying to remember things from Arch's installation, but I'm also perusing various Fedora UEFI installation documents to see what would work.

https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/Fedora/23/html/Installation_Guide/sect-installation-gui-manual-partitioning-recommended.html
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Unified_Extensible_Firmware_Interface

In a nutshell, though, you just need to shrink some things to make space for the EFI System partition. The rest should be taken care of.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2i8HCcAnY8

I've just finished up a set of packages for part of the Q3 2015 release of Intel's iGVT-g project.

For those who don't know, the project provides a solution to fully virtualize an Intel GPU's resources, and pass graphics workloads from a virtualized guest back to the host kernel. It allows for host and guest operating systems to utilize GPU acceleration simultaneously, and in my testing, performance is indistinguishable from native. The newest release works great with Windows guests and native drivers, though the project is a work in progress, and is not yet ready to be upstreamed.

They have separate projects for Xen and KVM at the moment, and are in the process of joining the two into a shared code base.

I currently have packages for the kernel and Xen, which are hosted on the AUR as linux-igvtg and xen-igvtg respectively.

Because of a recent change in the binutils project, x86_64-pep emulation no longer works, and the efi binary generation process of Xen is broken as a consequence. If you're booting your system using EFI firmware, GRUB 2 is recommended.

Suggestions and bug reports for the Arch packages are welcome at the AUR

Comments about the project itself can be submitted to the mailing list at:

Is it normal for audio to just completely stop working (Debian 8)? I've at least figured out that uninstalling pulseaudio fixes it, but at that point, I can no longer control volume through the GUI and have to use alsamixer.

No idea how to get it working again. Neither reinstalling pulseaudio or deleting all the config files does anything.

pulseaudio --start gives me an error:

Those are what I've found from googling around, but I still don't really know what I'm doing.

I don't understand this in the slightest, and I need to get this shit from this VM to somewhere else

I should probably stop being lazy and fix my Debian and/or Fedora VM, I didn't have nearly the problems with them until I fucked them both up royally with the QT framework

Fedora come prepackaged with SELinux, right? It's preconfigured, I don't need to concern myself with setting it up?
>>
What, realistically, is the benefit of Gentoo?

I installed it, and it just made everything take longer and made me hunt for solutions to pretty much anything I wanted to do.

I realized I can get the same security benefits by installing shit to a just werks distro and it would be easier and not take as long.

I don't care that much about USE flags, and emerge isn't that much easier to use than any other package manager I've tried.

Really, the only reason I can think of to stay with Gentoo is to keep bragging about using Gentoo.

Can someone explain, human readable, what SELinux and AppArmour is and how I can use it? I'm a ubuntu babby. Do I even need it?
>>
>>52647583
You don't need them at all.

AppArmor: "AppArmor ("Application Armor") is a Linux kernel security module that allows the system administrator to restrict programs's capabilities with per-program profiles. Profiles can allow capabilities like network access, raw socket access, and the permission to read, write, or execute files on matching paths."

In other words, "I'll let this program have access to this function and whatever the fuck else, but nothing more."
>>
>>52647583

By the way, I only say that you won't need them since you it's one of those things that you don't need to look into until you actually need it.

Isn't SElinux made by the NSA?
>>
>>52647629
It is, but it's open source( as far as I know), meaning anyone with the knowledge of the programming language can audit it as they wish.
>>
>>52647629
Yeah, but it's open-source now and it has been for a number of years.

A case made for its security was basically that the NSA wouldn't backdoor open-source products made under their real name, because then people would find them and know exactly who's responsible.

They'd make a fake identity, which they can do, and have that make a program full of bullshit, so it they're found out it's some imaginary person that everyone gets upset with.

I trust SELinux just fine; it's no more backdoored than anything else open-source,.

>>
>>52648698
you save a couple steps by installing windows first, as most linux installers will detect windows and add an entry to grub for you

basically,
windows then linux:
1. install windows
2. install linux
3. ???

linux then windows
1. install linux
2. install windows (overwrites grub stage1, now only windows boots)
3. boot a linux livecd, chroot in and reinstall grub stage1 (grub-install /dev/sda)
4. regenerate grub.conf so it can detect the windows installation (grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg)
4. ???

Current Plasma release is 5.5.4 and Kubuntu just released 5.4. Kde applications are also outdated.
