HPUX wasn't experimental or niche at all though. It was very much a production Unix, with a sizeable party of its market. Still in use today in all sorts of industrial and medical systems.

I have Gentoo running on Raspi that only boots up Emacs which boots SLIME which starts SBCL and then I imagine I have Lisp Machine, it's also hooked to 15" CRT and I gave it only 1GB sdcard as harddisk.

Speaking of Apple and Unix, there's also AU/X, which is basically UNIX with the classic Mac OS UI on top (you can also use a console emulator or pure X11 environment).
Arguably, a better UNIX than OS X since it doesn't try to hide all the UNIX shit from the user. Too bad it got killed by the 68k to PPC transition, probably because Apple didn't have the resources to rewrite AU/X for PPC.

Anyone here used proprietary UNIX like AIX or HP-UX? What are they like?
This is actually pretty usable.
OpenTTD compiled fine without too much effort, hardware (elitebook 2560p) mostly works including WiFi, 2d accelerated graphics, but not quite audio.
Shall become yet another OS to shitpost from.

Hardware accel is a pipe dream for R1. Once the Wayland guys push a full libGL path into Mesa that doesn't require X11, then Haiku can rebase their OpenGL stuff on that version of Mesa and make it a reality for R2.

It has a lot of goverment tracking shit in it, but at the same time it aims to be a secure OS and it's even likely there aren't any (internet-facing) backdoors. There's even a utility for users to encrypt their files.
