I built my own desktop but I really need a tablet as I fucking suck at studying in my dorm.
I have the original iPad Air as I got it for like $200 but it's really shitty for note taking. Plus I can't find a good stylus like what the Note 4 has or a surface pen.

If you want note taking, get the SP4. The bulk of the SB's battery is in the keyboard and it won't leave you much battery life compared to a SP4.

My group mate has one. She uses it to draw diagrams, label things, write notes, make graphs, etc (neurophysiology lab). After 3 hours of use, the battery is barely half drained. It's incredibly useful and functional from what I've seen. If you've got the money, go for it.

this is a "my dad works at nintendo" kinda roumer, but i was told they use their own because it has a slightly lower latency as BT, and with all the other BT devices in your house they couldn't really get the power they wanted without nuking the spectrum. (my MX705 literally works through my neighbors walls)
That and at my old college with 40+ imacs in a single room, mice would randomly pair to a new computer if it slept to long or the imacs receiver went into power save, using their own RF, they can force shit to stay paired and what not. (not sure if that was BT issue or apple implementation but i started bringing in my memechanical due to this issue, and no kids were not swapping shit around, teacher setup a camera)
but i tottaly feel you, i'd rather not have the receiver sticking out from my laptop, but hey, at least you can literally pair 16 devices to the same receiver, so i dont have to swap receivers when i go to work.

10" for tablet is just too big. Everybody with a 10" tablet uses it with a stand all the time. Ergo instead of a 10" tablet, whether it has a detachable keyboard or not, you can get a real laptop.
As a bonus you can still buy a cheap 7" tablet for those rare situations where a tablet is useful

It's hard to write on anything smaller than the Surface 3 non pro. I find the SP4 to be a little too big for the bus and walking around but it's perfect for desk writing, reading and regular laptop use.

There were also 40 identical other computers in the same room, they were all using the supplied apple "magic mouse" and keyboard (2010)
could have been a gen1 issue, could have been a lot of problems really, we lost 3 macs the first day of class, the powersupplies literally went up in smoke, then a week later 4 more had internal cracks on the screen.
In reality it could have been a whole slew of non BT related problems, but it left a bad taste in my mouth for any peripheral thats connected via BT.

I sometimes catch myself thinking this would be really, really good; I just don't have any particular NEED for it, though - I suppose I'd like to be able to take literal notes in OneNote, besides doing normal laptop/tablet things.
This year my current desktop's five years old, but plodding along fine. Assuming Surface is still a thing in maybe two? three? years' time I'll be happy to give it a go. The only thing really stopping me now is horsepower.
I'd love if the dock gave the thing some serious graphics-card oomph. I'm also unsure whether it's a big boy device you can flatten and reinstall from external media, or if your internal storage is forever circumcised with a 'recovery partition'. These are the only things really holding me back, less the purchase price.

Been using a Surface Pro 3 for a year and a few months now and it's awesome. A few years ago, the idea of having a fully fledged, x86 Windows install on a tablet was a dream to me, and then the Surface came around. It's brilliant, lightweight and has some of the sexiest design features of any tablet.
Oh, and the best thing is the Type Cover. The touchpad doesn't fucking suck massive cock like 99% of touchpads on the market do and the keyboard is actually decent and should be considered an engineering masterpiece with its thinness and tactile feedack. Fuck Apple's Butterfly switches. This piece of cardboard is great.

It can, but you need to have a use for a tablet form factor for it to actually make sense to buy one.
I bought a X201 6GB RAM and an SSD and happened to come into a free Pro 3 a few months later. I used the Surface for a while but now when I go out to school I take the thinkpad because it's keyboard feels better and with the extended battery it lasts just as long and the ssd and i5 make it perform just as well.
Now my surface sits in a tablet stand hooked up to my monitor and keyboard to be used as a desktop. I take it out to read the news or watch videos during breakfast or dinner but not much else.

last laptop I had though was a dell m1530. this thing barely fit into my bag, and wouldn't last 3 hours on a charge. I got it with a video card but it never seemed to be able to play anything faster than 25fps at the lowest graphic settings. so it was a brick that needed a charger and could use internet/porn
surface pro 3, I can carry it easily and it works full windows, plays decent games and most importantly, works. updating bullshit with windows sucks but I'm managing it. only things I don't like are the premium Microsoft wants to charge for extras and the battery life is still low(about 4-5 hours constant use). if the 5 comes out with a great battery life (>9 hours) I'll buy it.
