Personally, I don't see the problem here. Let's say you spend $20 on a request to get 20GB (and generally, you'll do much better than that) That $20 enables you to download ~60 FLAC albums (at ~330mb each) or ~240 albums in V0. That's a ridiculous amount of music for $20 and at the same time you're increasing your seeding size making it unlikely you'll need to fill a request is the future.
Requests are absolutely worth it as a new user if you can afford to fill a few big ones.
Personally I think HDBits is the only real BTN alternative but I think he's fair in avoiding saying that given it's quite difficult to ger in to.
