I'm on Mint Debian Edition and yesterday something broke. Everything boots, MDM ask me for my login but when I type in my password and click enter I only get a cryptic error message from the .xsession-errors file. What the hell does

Complete newbie when it comes to computers in general:
I'm trying to Dual-Boot Xubuntu on a Windows 8.1 HP Pavilion G7 laptop. When I go into the BIOS, the Boot options are minimal, and the most I can do is put USB Hard Drives as the highest priority in the boot loader. The problem that I'm running into is that my BIOS Mode is Legacy, and it doesn't seem to read the USB stick as a bootable device. My custom built desktop recognized it as a bootable device however, since it could boot it in UEFI mode. ( I used UUI, Unetbootin and Linux Live USB with no success on any of them. I also tried with two different USB sticks.)
Is there a way to make my laptop boot the USB properly, or am I fucked? I know HP stuff isn't well regarded, but the laptop is a hand me down, and I might as well fuck with it.
If I have to resort to just wiping away Windows 8.1's cancer and replace it entirely with Linux, I'm fine with that too.

Why is Nvidia such a piece of shit. So I installed Arch on my main PC finally, using it happily on my laptop.
Anyway here's the situation. Before installing nvidia drivers, all 3 monitors are working - mirrored - in the TTY before I login which is set to kick off X. After installing the nvidia drivers all the monitors went dead after booting. Great. Anyway, after some research I figured out I had to edit grub with 'nomodeset' inside GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT. So I do that and reboot and tada, now a single monitor is working in the TTY. Well I guess I can live with that, it's really annoying because it's my worst and smallest monitor and I generally have it turned off so if someone knows how to fix this please tell me.
Finally I boot into i3 -and fix positioning etc with xrandr- where I encounter a small but irritating problem. It seems my monitors identify incorrectly, while I would call them monitors 1 2 and 3, they call themselves 3 2 and 1. This fucks up the start workspaces putting 3 on monitor #1 etc. Now again, I CAN work around this, reorder my config to suit etc. But this is kind of dumb and annoying and there MUST be a way to simply tell the system which monitor is which. Possibly connected to the original issue where monitors 1 and 2 -or 3 and 2 according to linux- don't work in the TTY.

I cannot get Linux mint installed correctly in my acer aspire laptop. It has a uefi boot mode that I disable secure boot on, ran rufus to make the usb, and partitioned 20 gb for the install and 3 gb for the swap, with the install being on the / directory. My bootloader install being on that ext4 20 gb directory. The grub menu will not load without the USB in after install, why is this? I also tried to install the bootloader on my 300 mb efi partition yet it goes straight back to windows 10

I have downloaded a package called 'Ceph' which is a distributed file system. I am looking to perform forensic analysis on this systems within the topology.
As a side note, a distributed file system segregates metadata and file content and stores on different storage devices.
Now, I am looking to locate physically on disk, where objects are stored, along with where the objects, placement groups, osds are in the topology.
Ceph allows you to do this via bash CLI by using ceph osd dump, ceph mon dump and so on
Now, it is possible that you can append this information after executing the command to a file, however, if you are a forensic analysis, it is quite likely that the person may never have appended this information to a document on the system
Therefore, there needs to be some form of reverse engineering, to try and locate the source that is output from the commands from 'ceph osd dump', hence why I am grepping a string which is omitted from this command, in order to locate the original source where the command retrieves this information

You could say that he implies the ideal Desktop through his points (i.e. A desktop OS should do all these things perfectly. Linux doesn't. Therefore, Linux isn't a Desktop OS), but there a problem with the ideal approach in this manner. This problem comes up as a too broad approach. He complains about a few points that either expand the meaning of Desktop OS to something else, or expands the meaning on Desktop OS to include things "in the meta". For example, one of his points is that OSS projects are understaffed. Is this really a defining feature of an ideal Desktop OS that cannot be circumvented? Doesn't OSS contributions count, or are the only developers that should should count are the ones that are forced to work on the project? I can understand the later, but this is usually circumvented or avoidable (As his examples are usually worked on by other companies joining in. Ignoring Red Hat and SuSE is kinda bullshit). Another example is that he starts talking about things a Server OS should do. Why does a Desktop OS need to be a server in any regard?

I'm using ffmpeg on gentoo and can not get a proper webm no matter what flags and method I try. I'm just tying to screencap using x11grab. When I capture directly to webm it looks like shit. When I capture in other formats and convert to webm it looks like shit. Tried tweaking a bunch of flags to no avail.

I agree, but sometimes people will have to distrohop before they have a good feel about some basic aspects like package manager and repos. It might also take a little time before you decide if you want a rolling or point release distro. Also, some distros are well configured out of the box, so even though theoretically you could build up your system to be like them, it's a lot of work..
Personally, I would advice beginners to go with a full-fledged distro rather than a bare bones one. A Long Term Support release of Ubuntu is what I'd recommend. This recommendation encompasses Ubuntu flavors and other distros that are built on Ubuntu LTS like Mint.
