Intended for users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are four ways to try Linux, you can:

1) Install a Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
2) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full Linux experience".
3) Dual-boot Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about Linux)
4) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with Linux (not recommended)

Before asking, please find the answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe wine can make up for it.

I wouldn't call Arch advanced, at least not compared to Gentoo. It's pretty much like any other minimal/netinstall distro, just without a GUI installer.
When it comes to maintaining it, I even find openSUSE harder than Arch.

They started out on 4chan, yes. Then they were co-opted by Reddit and later Tumblr and Twitter and now they're complete normalfag memes posted by the likes of Katy Perry to describe their bullshit normalfag issues.

Dumb Frogposter was made on 4chan to get rid of this dead meme. The fact that Reddit steals all of our jokes does not make the need to get rid of pepe any less.

And the fact that you called me a "normie" just confirms that you're a redditor; or at the very least a newfag who hangs out on /r9k/.

Newfag detected. 4chan is a contrarian website; we would never adhere to norms like that.

Wojak and Pepe aren't just popular now; they've had all meaning stripped from them. Look at what happened when those retards on /r9k/ shot up their schools. They posted a ski mask pepe. What did everyone else do? They kept posting le funny frog in a ski mask.

Is there a way to make firefox ignore the gtk/metacity whatever theme the DE/WM has set up?
>>
>>52611146
Don't know how to completely disable it but you can start it from a terminal with
Exec=env GTK_THEME=whatever firefox

Replace whatever with one of the installed themes. You can also make it point to the files, like
GTK2_RC_FILES=/usr/share/themes/Simple/gtk-2.0/gtkrc
.
>>
>>52611270
I should note that to make the second one work it needs to be like
env GTK2_RC_FILES=/usr/share/themes/Simple/gtk-2.0/gtkrc firefox

Complete newbie when it comes to computers in general:

I'm trying to Dual-Boot Xubuntu on a Windows 8.1 HP Pavilion G7 laptop. When I go into the BIOS, the Boot options are minimal, and the most I can do is put USB Hard Drives as the highest priority in the boot loader. The problem that I'm running into is that my BIOS Mode is Legacy, and it doesn't seem to read the USB stick as a bootable device. My custom built desktop recognized it as a bootable device however, since it could boot it in UEFI mode. ( I used UUI, Unetbootin and Linux Live USB with no success on any of them. I also tried with two different USB sticks.)

Is there a way to make my laptop boot the USB properly, or am I fucked? I know HP stuff isn't well regarded, but the laptop is a hand me down, and I might as well fuck with it.

If I have to resort to just wiping away Windows 8.1's cancer and replace it entirely with Linux, I'm fine with that too.
>>
>>52611309
Can you open another tty ? Try hitting ctrl+alt+f2.
If it works, login and reinstall MDM with apt If it still fails, try typing
sudo touch /usr/share/mdm/distro.conf

After a quick google search I see people having that after nvidia driver installations and full disks.

What do you guys think of Richard Stallman's philosophy? I can get behind freedom over convenience but freedom over basic functionality is a bit far for me.

I'm all for free software, but until we've fought hard enough to get it into the mainstream and widely supported, I don't think intentionally crippling my computer helps anything.
>>
>>52611376
Also read that it could be related to botched ownership rights in the usr folder.
>>52611378
I think of it like Marxism, would be nice but it ain't happening in this life. I do support the open-source lifestyle but that's as far as I'm willing to go. Full freedom costs both in convenience but with real money in hardware as well.
>>
>>52611376
Yeah, that's possible. I've already tried reinstalling mdm, I also tried another display manager without success. Typing that command resulted in a black screen with cursor, but I've experienced that before when trying to fix this so I'm not sure if anything actually changed for the better.

Third thread for luck.

Why is Nvidia such a piece of shit. So I installed Arch on my main PC finally, using it happily on my laptop.

Anyway here's the situation. Before installing nvidia drivers, all 3 monitors are working - mirrored - in the TTY before I login which is set to kick off X. After installing the nvidia drivers all the monitors went dead after booting. Great. Anyway, after some research I figured out I had to edit grub with 'nomodeset' inside GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT. So I do that and reboot and tada, now a single monitor is working in the TTY. Well I guess I can live with that, it's really annoying because it's my worst and smallest monitor and I generally have it turned off so if someone knows how to fix this please tell me.

Finally I boot into i3 -and fix positioning etc with xrandr- where I encounter a small but irritating problem. It seems my monitors identify incorrectly, while I would call them monitors 1 2 and 3, they call themselves 3 2 and 1. This fucks up the start workspaces putting 3 on monitor #1 etc. Now again, I CAN work around this, reorder my config to suit etc. But this is kind of dumb and annoying and there MUST be a way to simply tell the system which monitor is which. Possibly connected to the original issue where monitors 1 and 2 -or 3 and 2 according to linux- don't work in the TTY.

I fancied giving KDE a try and I've just installed it and everything, but for some reason I'm not getting any thumbnails in Dolphin, for images or for videos.

I can't remember ever having to do anything to get image thumbnails in XFCE/Thunar (though maybe I've just forgotten), and for some reason I'm not getting video thumbnails in spite of having installed the ffmpegthumbs package.

Can anyone point me to the packages I'm missing? I've tried googling but can't find any package for image thumbnails, and for video thumbnails the package is supposed to be ffmpegthumbs on KDE which doesn't seem to be doing anything.

I cannot get Linux mint installed correctly in my acer aspire laptop. It has a uefi boot mode that I disable secure boot on, ran rufus to make the usb, and partitioned 20 gb for the install and 3 gb for the swap, with the install being on the / directory. My bootloader install being on that ext4 20 gb directory. The grub menu will not load without the USB in after install, why is this? I also tried to install the bootloader on my 300 mb efi partition yet it goes straight back to windows 10

I'm quite new to this stuff and it might be a stupid question rather than a linux question.

What is gtk? I checked I have gtk2.x86_64 and gkt3.x86_64 packages installed. Do programs use either one of them or do I need to specify which one they use?

It's not really a question but some general directions as to where to start learning more about it would be great.

a package that I have downloaded allows you to use a command which computes an output, however, I need this output in text form. But the reason why I need this is for offline analysis, in a situation where I am not able to use the command to get the output.

Therefore, I'm searching for a file, or where the command gets this information from, as it should be stored in the FS somewhere
>>
>>52614457
>package that I have downloaded allows you to use a command which computes an output
this is literally THE most ambiguous way you can desribe a program

your answers tells me nothing
>>
>>52614488
Okay, I'll have another go

I have downloaded a package called 'Ceph' which is a distributed file system. I am looking to perform forensic analysis on this systems within the topology.

As a side note, a distributed file system segregates metadata and file content and stores on different storage devices.

Now, I am looking to locate physically on disk, where objects are stored, along with where the objects, placement groups, osds are in the topology.

Ceph allows you to do this via bash CLI by using ceph osd dump, ceph mon dump and so on

Now, it is possible that you can append this information after executing the command to a file, however, if you are a forensic analysis, it is quite likely that the person may never have appended this information to a document on the system

Therefore, there needs to be some form of reverse engineering, to try and locate the source that is output from the commands from 'ceph osd dump', hence why I am grepping a string which is omitted from this command, in order to locate the original source where the command retrieves this information
>>
>>52614571
ceph is free software, would it not be easier to do any of;
a. study the source code
b. study the documentation
c. simply ask the devs? (mailing list/IRC)
>>
>>52614650
>>52614571
also, if it's metadata you're searching for, you won't find it in a file
filesystem metadata is not reflected in files
you would have to scan the disk itself for that (via the device node(s))
also, the metadata may not actually be stored in the same format as what the program outputs when probing for such information normally (the source code will help greatly here, as it will make clear how and where it stores any kind of metadata)
>>
>>52614650
>>52614684
By grepping for the content and finding a magic file that already contained this information would be a very quick cheat, but its evident that the file I may be searching for does not even exist.

The next step is to study the source code and identify how these commands work, thanks for the advice though, I'll do exactly that

To extrapolate further, Firefox, GIMP, Xfce, and the pre-LXQt releases of LXDE all use Gtk2. Gtk3 was a cluster fuck for a couple of years with API changes everywhere, but it's settled down nicely. People who ship Gtk application binaries for OS X or Windows often don't include a decent theme which is why you get "hurr Gtk is ugly as shit" trolls every time someone recommends GIMP or Deluge to the plebs.
>>
>>52614051
Or you could just fucking use Debian Stable which carefully vets all updates to the main repository and pushes security patches faster than anything other than possibly RHEL and OpenBSD. >Gives link to an argumentatively insane write-up
>Expects people to take him seriously.
He has good evidence, but his argument is moot, as he doesn't say what a Desktop OS is. That write-up is the equivalent of me saying water is unhealthy, as drinking too much of it can have negative effects on your health. If I put up some good evidence about water intoxication, it doesn't prove anything, as I never defined what "unhealthy" is. That's the problem with bashing. It doesn't help to drive your point. To do this properly would be to state what a Desktop OS is (This is providing an ideal alternative to compare to) or say that something is better (This is providing a real alternative to compare to). You cannot say negatives without saying why these negatives are negative.
You could say that he implies the ideal Desktop through his points (i.e. A desktop OS should do all these things perfectly. Linux doesn't. Therefore, Linux isn't a Desktop OS), but there a problem with the ideal approach in this manner. This problem comes up as a too broad approach. He complains about a few points that either expand the meaning of Desktop OS to something else, or expands the meaning on Desktop OS to include things "in the meta". For example, one of his points is that OSS projects are understaffed. Is this really a defining feature of an ideal Desktop OS that cannot be circumvented? Doesn't OSS contributions count, or are the only developers that should should count are the ones that are forced to work on the project? I can understand the later, but this is usually circumvented or avoidable (As his examples are usually worked on by other companies joining in. Ignoring Red Hat and SuSE is kinda bullshit). Another example is that he starts talking about things a Server OS should do. Why does a Desktop OS need to be a server in any regard?

Why hop between distros? The differences between them are minimal at best.

Then make it feel good, goddamnit. You're using Linux: you have actual control over your system. You can uninstall whatever you want. You can stop any processes or daemons that you want.

If you have a specific reason to use a different distro, then that's fine. But distrohopping out of ennui is a clear sign you don't really appreciate Linux.

A Ubuntu flavor most likely, but not vanilla, it's prepackaged with Amazon spyware.

Kubuntu, Xubuntu, and Ubuntu MATE are popular around here. DO NOT install Mint; it's shit.

This is an unpopular opinion, but I recommend Fedora. It was my first distribution, and I figured it all out when I was seven.

It's sponsored by Red Hat, who've been around since the beginning and actually give a shit about Open Source, it's pretty much as well-supported as Ubuntu, and its package manager is more straightforward.

I agree, but sometimes people will have to distrohop before they have a good feel about some basic aspects like package manager and repos. It might also take a little time before you decide if you want a rolling or point release distro. Also, some distros are well configured out of the box, so even though theoretically you could build up your system to be like them, it's a lot of work..

Personally, I would advice beginners to go with a full-fledged distro rather than a bare bones one. A Long Term Support release of Ubuntu is what I'd recommend. This recommendation encompasses Ubuntu flavors and other distros that are built on Ubuntu LTS like Mint.
