it's safe to dd to an ssd, it's just that wiping an ssd is more effective with secure erase, if only because it will also mark wiped blocks as free as well (the distinction between a zeroed and free block only exists on ssd's)

I upgraded my motherboard and cpu a few weeks ago. Up until that point, I was worried that I would need to crack or buy a new licence since I had the system builder licence. I'm going to tell you how to give microsoft the finger right here, right now. The same bullshit happened to me after a few upgrades to my system and when I tried asking them to reactivate it for me, they basically told me to fuck off. What you are going to need to do is download a tool called KMS Auto net, it activates your windows for you, and microsoft can't do a thing about it. just be aware, when you do this AVG detects one of its background services as malware (which i doubt it is) but i removed it just to be safe and my windows is still activated. ill send screenshots of what it looks like.

My Asus 990FX died. Actually, Fallout 4 appears to have stressed it and revealed issues with multicore (8350). The weird thing is that I regularly ran VMs doing a bunch of stuff. Oh well.
I put in an MSI mobo. Windows happily booted up and found the new drivers. Then it started complaining about activation.
I ended up on the phone with them for a minute (after navigating their wildly fucked up website that DID NOT WORK) before getting pissed, hanging up, reformatting reinstalling 8.1.
Actually, I'm dual booting now. I only boot 8.1 for gaymen. Windows isn't reliable enough for me to depend on anymore. All my Win dev is done in a VM now. If my hardware dies, I just take the whole VM to a new host.
I don't need to be down for two days while clients are waiting because Microsoft's shitty DRM fucked me.
