>>
Sometimes I make an ad-hoc between my laptop and my desktop to transfer movies and shit. I like to keep my movie/tv show/porn/etc collection synced between both computers.

No need for a real server, although that would be pretty cool. Wouldn't mind having a dedicated seedbox set up.
>>
>>52602786
Storage spaces is the giveaway here. These aren't 12TB SSD's, but instead many drives presented as 12TB volumes via storage spaces.

It's possible they're all SSD's, but it could also be tiered with some SSD in front of spindles.
>>
>>52602786
>>52603031
Yeah, it's all storage spaces. Speccy can't see past them to the actual disks, which is somewhat annoying.

Also I don't actually have 36 TB of storage, closer to 14, just don't have my thin provisioning levels set at sane amounts.
>>
I have a 4 disk striped mirror in storage spaces with 2 volumes on it of equal size.

If I start filling up the second volume first will that still be written to the start of the disks or halfway through? I accidentally copied my media over before my data and the media partition happens to be much much faster and I think it's because it's at the beginning of the disks.

For file hosting and streaming, more than enough. I prefer some redundancy in storage, but for just media it isn't strictly necessary.

Find a cheaper mobo if you can, I'm not seeing anything on that making it worth the price other than the size. Move to micro-atx if you have the space.

Would a Node 304 work? I know it will fit a longer graphics card with one of the drive bays removed, but is that PSU too long?
>>
>>52605779
>Would a Node 304 work

Depends on whether or not I could fit the 280X in it without removing the drive bay. For my use I need to fit 3 3.5" HDD in there along with the GPU. The CM130 can handle it, but as you say it's not the prettiest cabinet out there. I mainly got it because it was dirt cheap, and it really doesn't look so bad IRL. It's just a small black box really.

The 304's got three bays for two drives each and only one of them interferes with the graphics card IIRC. But if you already got the Elite 130 then go with it. It's okay to build in and has pretty good drive support, I just didn't like the looks so I sold mine.

More or less what I have. Overpowered for simply acting as a fileserver for one or two users. Some might say the motherboard is expensive, but it does have proper support for xeons, if you want to upgrade to those later. IPMI is helpful when you want to run it headless.

8GB is a lot unless you want to use ZFS or something like that. Don't know how much RAM filesystems like that needs.

Mine replaced my old Asus P5B + E7600. I didn't really gain anything from upgrading other than having a much smaller server that can still hold 5-7 drives.

overclocking tosses that out the window.

decreased hardware life != free
>>
>>52608821
stability/reliability/efficiency are way more important than a small performance gain.
>>
>>52608898
>stability/reliability
It's a perfectly stable overclock.
Everything from the LGA1366 generation had clocks way under what they can run at.
>efficiency
I'd bet that the increase in performance I get outweighs the increase in total system power consumption, but even then it's a negligible amount of power.
>>
>>52608821
>performance
reliabilty is more important than performance in a server
what if the processor craps out during an important write? You'll lose data
>>
>>52608916
>perfectly stable overclock
anything over stock is going to be less stable than stock clocks, only a matter of degree. overclocking puts everything under greater load, and therefore shorter lifespan. talking super long term stability here, not what runs right now. plus water cooling is just another thing to fail, only further decreasing reliability.

>the increase in performance I get outweighs the increase in total system power consumption
highly doubt it, power consumption scales exponentially with frequency

But total system power consumption is what matters.
If the CPU goes from using 50w average to 75w average, but the whole system consumption only goes up from 100w to 125w, then that's only a 25% increase in total consumption for a 30% increase in performance.

>>52609072
By that logic, I should underclock because it's more stable.

Also I don't need it to last super long, at some point I'll do the exact same "buy xeon > put in mobo > use as server" thing that I'm doing with my current board.

Then get numbers from the wall and find out. Especially with a "significant" overclock like yours, it's not gonna be that gentle.

And no, I only said above stock, nothing about below. Below stock you also run into problems. Processors are designed and binned to work best at their stock frequencies. With a server, I trust those engineers to know better than I do when it comes to making something work reliably.

I don't play games with my data, and would play even fewer with something I'm guessing stores actual projects and not just troves of anime like mine.

So I'm looking to replace it with something like this:
Pentium G4400
8 or 16 GB of el cheapo DDR4 (I didn't know DDR4 was already below DDR3 in price)
~4TB of usable hard drive space needed + an old 128 GB SSD

I'm thinking of buying one, but I don't have many needs right now. I'd use it as an overpowered NAS, really. Maybe setup my own mail server, owncloud, plex, third backup, maybe let it handle some video encoding when I'm gaymen. Anyone running ZFS on Linux? Still using my HP Microserver N40l. Was thinking of upgrading it but can't seem to source a suitable Gen8 with beefier CPU (since I am looking to update to encrypted storage). Competing prebuilts have a good cpu but comparatively shitty drive bays or are crazy tall, and i'm looking to stuff everything in a relatively small cabinet with low shelves

Checked out building my own but there's so much to factor in I really just want something that works out of the box that I can send back and scream if something blows up.

Just so you know: reds are overpriced low performers except for the red pro, which cost even more.

I have 4 WD red 4tb drives for £125 each like 9 months ago. Recently bought two Toshiba 3tb 7200rpm drives for £65 each and they fucking fly compared to the reds and don't run much hotter.

Don't get me wrong reds are great and all but I think they're a bit of a meme. I'm torturing my Toshibas for a while longer and if they hold up I'm going to get a whole bunch of these. Half price compared to reds, much faster and only 1tb less.

Hello /g/!
I have some questions about servers

What are the benefits of having a homeserver?

What can they be used for?

Should i consider even having one?
>>
>>52618877
All my VMs are based off of one of two templates depending on what they're going to be used for.

I've got some powershell scripts made to 90% automate the creation and provisioning process. I occasionally will create the VMs by myself but I usually delegate it to a server tech.

>>52618892
The load is actually fairly low. I haven't checked that recently but it's along the lines of 25 dell R520's. The requirements used to be a fair bit higher before I offloaded all my email to office 365. Being an academic institution I get insane discounts for hardware purchases and licensing. For example office 365 is literally free for me. All together I have about 60k users. The vast majority of those are students who are around for 1-4 years. They've got a shitload of resources available to them provided by us but maybe .5% of all students ever use them. AKA VDI, office 365 accounts, etc.

Offically my title is Manager – Technical Services but I'm more second in command.
>>
>>52618892
Again, being an academic institution Microsoft loves to suck our dick so everything newly made is 2012 r2 but there is maybe 50 VMs that are "legacy" and are running 2008. Maybe 10 are running Debian 7 for some really niche stuff.

The hypervisor is ESXi 5.5 but I plan to up that to 6.0 soon. Fuck hyperv

It's stupidly overpowered for a NAS so I'm thinking of getting Debian instead of freeNAS. Thing is that the latter looks so easy for setting up a RAIDz2. I have little experience with Debian, but I'd like to try doing some ZFSoL. Also, any suggestion with the parts? I think everything is ok, but I might change the case to an Arc Mini or that cubed Node 804. Anything I should know about using the SAS ports for connecting some drives? I'll be probably getting this after upgrading the desktop with all the nice things coming out this year.

I like the components. That would make a nice server.

I agree about the OS. I ran FreeNAS for awhile on my home server and hated it. Fucking terrible. I then tried Debian for awhile. It was OK, but I just don't like Debian in general. Now I am running Fedora Server and love it.

As for the case, if you don't have a rack, get whatever you like the look of that has good airflow. Most Fractal cases are really good, and have an understated or industrial look. If I didn't have a rack I would totally get a Node.

I am not sure about the motherboard. It has an assload of SAS ports, and all the drives you are getting are SATA. I would be very hesitant about trying to do a SAS to SATA conversion.

If you want all the drives connected to the motherboard, I'd get an Avoton board. But then you wouldn't have a Xeon.

If not, get a basic server-grade board that supports the processor you want and get a PERC H310 card and flash the firmware so it's an HBA card. Then get a couple 8087 to SATA breakout cables, which would give you 8 SATA connectors total.

The Dell PERC H310 is $60 to $80 on ebay. A bit more with two cables. Here's a link for info on setting the card up: http://www.vladan.fr/flash-dell-perc-h310-with-it-firmware/

I will be doing this with my system when I get the spare cash to buy a bunch of new drives.
>>
>>52620146
>>52620247
Also, I am pretty sure the Asrock Avoton board has like 12 SATA ports on it. That would be plenty for your six storage drives and an SSD for the OS. You could even bump it up to eight storage drives if you wanted.
>>
>>52618870
>should I just use the cheapest tb drive
Use a soccer-mom tier drive (WD or Seagate) but avoid No-Name drives. There's an image that get's posted in the humor threads of a "drive" that is just a usb stick and some weights.

The patch panel at the front of the rack goes to a patch panel at the back of the rack. All my home network cabling is plugged into the back and then connected to the switch at the front. It just makes it more clean and tidy.

The top APC UPS isn't used because it needs batteries. It really isn't needed at all because I don't have enough load. I have them for a couple reasons. First is I don't want to risk losing data with a power loss or power spike. Second is even if I lose power I will still have internet access, because my modem, router, and firewall would all still have power.
>>
>>52620299
Damn that's a lot of ports. It would be nice saving almost $90. The atom would be underpowered though, I might regret that later.

No pics of it, but my spigot and BOINC server is an all in one PC with a broken screen that runs 8gb ddr3 and a Pentium G620 with an 80gb spinner on it. Hooked up to the web via a 500mbps power line connection; gives no trouble up to the 10 or so people I've had on, even with dynmap running. I just keep it in the cool basement with the back off to mitigate the terrible AIO laptop cooler it has. Runs quite efficiently off a power brick
>>
>>52620526
That really depends on what you want to do with your server. I mean, it's an Octa-core. And it isn't the same thing as the Atoms of old. It would do very well with storing files, doing backups, and serving Plex to a few clients.

But you might be right. If you want to do more then that you would be better served with a Xeon.

I just rented my first VPS and as I'm reading the auth.log, I'm amazed by the amount of failed attempts to log into my server.
I knew there would be bots trying to log in, but I didn't expect it to be this bad.
