My wife just talked me out of buying a 3rd gen carbon w/ dual core i7 and 26g of ram. It was 2800 and I was going to run Linux so I'd have something to develop on. Did I do the right thing by listening to her? I'm currently running a mbpro and I'm sick of osx.
>>
>>52591062
you can run linux on a mbp
>>
>>52591062
If you have a good laptop and are unhappy with the OS, why switch laptops over just changing the OS?
>>
>>52591073
Ya but it's a work laptop and it's working fine. Besides I'm not suppose to use it for personal use. Some of my projects would bode well on company equipment
>>
Don't buy a new computer. Run Linux on a VM. If you don't like OSX then Linux isn't for you either. OSX is Unix and acceots Unix commands.
>>
>>52591062
what are you developing that needs those specs? just build a pc for half that if you really need that performance, you can keep the mbp (running loonix if that really tickles your fancy) for making shitposts like this
>>
>>52591112
I have a few Linux VMs running(Linux Armin). I guess I was secretly hoping you guys would say I'd be stupid not to get the x1. Thanks for the feedback!

I work a lot with redis, elastic search, file processing, etc, etc. Speaking of shit posts, I have another one coming up

In what ways? Please elaborate, many of us (including myself) are actually considering mbp because of the build quality and unix memes.

it is objectively the worst OS in the world with the worst filesystem backed by the most unethical, most hipster, liberal arts tier company.

i don't use OSX but my dad (long-time software engineer who turned manager) has a MBP, which he always complains about yet claims it's a great OS. The other day he was trying to find where iTunes imported some music I gave him, so he searched for it in (I assume) Finder, it found the files instantly but then he spent minutes trying to figure out how to get the full path of the file.
"But look how fast it found the file!"
and that's why OSX is not Unix

The ui changed, and its not even subtle. And I can't even change it back. And that what pisses me off. I liked it the way I had it setup and they slipped in this goddamn change. Its irritating. Also case insensitive fs, ds_store files everywhere, hiding ~/library and /, plists, the EULA, having to sign said EULA to run got the first time, no command line interface to the app store(I use boxen so that matters)

that they make it not obvious to display the full path is anything
even windows search (iirc) has the full path as one of the default columns in search results. at least it did back when i was using windows
osx has clear priorities with regard to ui/ux/system design and layout, and one of those priorities is to keep complicated things like hierarchical file management out of their users' soft and delicate brains
on a gnu system, locate/slocate/mlocate performs very fast searches against an indexed database of the file system and outputs one file per line (with the full path) to stdout, where it can be redirected or piped for further processing. this is unix.

Pic related should be able to do everything you need, OP. You can get a snazzy T420 with an i7, 8 gigs of RAM, and a 1600X900 screen for about 300$ on Ebay. Buy an SSD and move the HDD into the Ultrabay and you're all set.

I don't even know who's more cancer.

In any case, if OP is even still here, you'll be far better served with a desktop. If you really need portability, a Clevo with your own parts will be much better as you can stuff 3x SSDs in it so your drives aren't choking for lack of bandwidth.

He never said he needed the high specs. He just said he wanted a laptop to run Linux on for development purposes. The T420 (or any old business-grade laptop) should be able to do that for much, much cheaper than a new laptop.
>>
>>52591062

$2800? Why would you blow $2800 on a computer to run Linux?

Uh. That's probably true though.

I'm not GP, but Linux and OS X are extremely similar. OS X + GNU toolchain is pretty much most of what you want out of Linux, but with a better, less buggy UI layer.
