I don't. Nearly everyone has switched over to 7zip too.

I still bought a winrar license for like $20 last year just to say thanks to the winrar devs. For years winrar had kept nagging me to pay yet it kept all the features I needed for free. Winrar was a true bro.

I actually bought a full version of winrar and use it to this day. I don't know how to feel. I bought it mainly because it just werks (tm) and I had no idea 7zip even existed.

What's wrong with winrar anyway? Why do people object paying a license for winrar anyway? Are most people THAT fucking dirt poor?

Recovery record, compression and encryption at the same time, in one file and in one simple operation. It can't be beat.

The only other alternative is to run Linux on a machine with ECC ram and have the HDDs formatted in ZFS with compression activated and store true-crypt volumes on that.

If that's not your thing, you can just install WinRar on your Windows machine.

Why do you need recovery record, compression and encryption at the same time I hear you ask? To protect and store your files as efficiently and safe as possible of course.

I'm actually serious. Recovery record ensures data integrity, compression negates the overhead of a large recovery record and encryption is always advisable, especially if you plan on backing up your data to the cloud.

On Windows, I personally use 7-zip because I want to stay the fuck away from WinRAR. But some archives (in rar format that is) doesn't extract properly with 7-zip, but works perfectly with WinRAR. It's fucking stupid, my guess is that they have some changed it up and have some sort of new proprietary compression method that only works with the WinRAR application.

7-Zip works with pretty much everything other than those extremely rare WinRAR-only .rar archives. I wish rar would die permanently, and soon.

The company I work for still pays for this. With most medium to large companies it's either winzip or winrar, and it's the same case for other kinds of software. If it's free as in freedom or free beer, they won't go near the things.
I guess they think it's worthless if it doesn't cost anything, for some reason, or they want paid support in case of a fuckup.

My only gripe with 7-zip (vs e.g. Winrar) is that it won't let me open images, text files in their default viewer (even Windows Picture Viewer) when double clicking them.
There's an open issue on this, it's linked to temp files being deleted way too early.
It's because of an autist who (rightfully) threw a tantrum because some confidential files weren't always properly removed from the temp folder.
>>
