Multiple reasons.
Microsoft has no idea how to create appealing software. The whole OS is an inconsistent mess of different design and usage paradigms, bloated and over-engineered UIs everywhere (pic related) and a dumped down window manager. There is no way to handle a big amount of applications, anything will get into your way sooner or later, especially if you are just working on the laptop and don't have multiple displays.
Doing any form of Linux or Unix administration is a pain in the ass to do on Windows. There isn't a single usable Terminal emulator, things like Putty or WinSCP are a mess compared to native SSH support in any other OS. Windows is also a horrible OS for any form of programming that doesn't target exclusively Windows.
Basically anything I do works better and more comfortable on OSX.
I couldn't care less about the tablet gimmick, I'd rather get a separate tablet that is light and slim, with actual battery life instead of settling on something that is worse as a tablet and worse as a laptop.

First things first.
Windows 10, in the last two months, has really tightened up overall. Ask any person on Fast Ring who actually remembers to check to re-enable it after massive, almost weekly, build updates, how much it has improved. The Book went from a jittery mess of nerves to now clearly telling you what you need to close before allowing itself to undock, and it switches with the smallest blink.
The OS menu's are all being polished, and right now they are bretty mint.
If you are in dire need of Unix, then yes you are obviously not the target demographic. We are debunking this idea that Apple makes the shit for creatives and whatever nonsense they claim.
Microsoft literally filled an entire new niche that we needed for years but never had a product achieve with such grace. Maybe the Sony Z Book would have been better but I can't find that shit anywhere.
I quite literally get up from my desk and detatch the Surface Dock connector, in the middle of assembling a timeline in Premiere Pro, go upstairs and sit inside of a Porsche GT3 or a 2016 Bentley Flying Spur, and I'm chilling. Yeah the battery dies fairly fast, but the cars are usually plugged in with the showcase transformers on the back so I can run power from them.
Editing timeline footage and photos on a stupidly nice screen is also a massive plus, so the switching mode part is totally not gimmicky. It's the entire reason I wanted this thing. I used it for one day and I knew it was the solution to a problem a creative would have when they have to shoot and edit on the go.

I undock, spin the top around, redock and close as a clipboard, grab the pen from the surprisingly strong magnetic side grip, and I'm off. I can still monitor and edit my photos on the go, walk them to the showroom, connect to the wireless display and then dual screen the photos of the car with the newer, more expensive model there next to the display in real life.
Finish up, follow the boss around and take notes in One Note, WiFi on all floors so I'm checking our inventory online, pulling cars that need photos, etc. Time to edit, go downstairs, literally the dock connector glides in magnetically, and it even fucking remembers where I move the monitor placement in Display Settings, per dock! So I never, EVER, configure my monitors again.

I had no idea that the dealer I work at, would actually have those docks. I walked in there on my job interview with a Surface Pro 3. Hired in 6 minutes.
You didn't ask if I have another PC. Or if I have failsafes. Like for instance, symlinking my Surface and since I have WiFi at work, at worst, I lose the edits I did that day. Not the RAW files, which I first back up to my home PC, safely on my RAID 1 drive.
I bought this myself because within a day of using it, I crushed the other guy they hired as their in house photographer. I wanted the job, and I had the tools to run rings around him, on every single front.

Our dealership is that impressive. No expense was spared since they are carrying truly high end cars. We needed tools, not toys, and OSX couldn't do half of what we needed, and UNIX is a nightmare compared to Azure and Microsoft.

the surface 4 sits in a awkward position
For sketching it seems great with it's large resolution 13" screen and only 800grams of weight, but it's crippled by it's low voltage dual core CPU, so if you want to use it for things beyond simple painting, like editing videos, working on photoshop with large multiple layer files
for other types of work, a keyboard is needed and that was the main weakness of the surface 1/2/3, a mediocre keyboard which you couldn't use on your lap, the surface book fixed this and even added a GPU so you can transform your tablet into a real laptop
but that doubles the weight and makes it just like a normal laptop
this might seem great, being able to switch back and forth between a fully functional laptop and a windows tablet
but at $1800 for that configuration it's not so appealing, considering you can get a surface 2 for around $500-600 and spend the other $1200 on a great laptop with more ports, SSD space, and better cpu / gpu
