My download speed is 0.05mb/s (bits, not bytes), how bad is this compared to dial up?

Also new to /g/, and posting using mobile data.
>>
Use "speed of me"
>>
>>52558195
anything above 5KB/s is faster than dialup
>>
>>52558195
That is literally over ten times faster than dial-up. 56k connections download at 5 KB/s at the outside most, and it was really common to only get 3 KB/s.

the reason it seems so slow is because websites are so bloated now. When websites were just plain HTML and maybe a few small images, they loaded okay over those old connections.
>>
>>52558195
0.05 millibits/s is 0,00000000005 Mb/s
Wow, it must have taken you years to post this.

Its unbearable. In country of second category poland we got this for free. And i mean for free, you dont pay anything ever for this. Usually its 10mbps.
>>
>>52558481
If i wasnt posting using mobile data there'd be no chance. Captcha runs out before I can even post.
>>
>>52558488
>Bitching about free internet.
When you don't have any slow is just fine.
>>
>>52558195
48.9KB/s ~ 50KB/s which is 0.05MB/s

>(bits, not bytes)
No that's bytes.
You have 391.2kbps, that's almost 7 times faster than 56K modem.
>>
>>52558596
He is memeing you ,faggot
>>
I'd love to have 50kilobytes per second on a stable connection. I've got 3G that cuts out all the time, hardly connects to websites, and after i use up my tiny data limit i'm throttled to 64 kilobits per second

Shiggy.

Isn't that equal to 56kbits?

It's some ridiculous euro-shit, and they're unbelievably smug about it.
>>
>>52558195
had 0.1mb/s for 7 years
in germany...
now 120mb/s
steam is downloading on 10mb/s
>>
>>52558785
No, bits (specifically stated by my speed test). I wish I had that speed. My downloads average less than a byte a second. It took me near enough 2 hours to have my internet speed tested.
>>
>>52558195
My "free" unlimited data uses GPRS speeds, but I don't use it for anything besides email and basic browsing on the rare occasion there isn't WiFi nearby.

I would, but my upload speed is garbage, capped at 200 KB/s
>>
>>52559858
Dude, that speed would be fantastic for me. Im supposed to have broadband, but like i said, less than a byte a second. Webpages take half an hour to load and often just crash instead of loading.

No

This. You could never go back to dial-up even if you wanted to. Sites are too graphic heavy now

At 1 byte per second it would have taken you 264.5 minutes to post that image, and you probably would have used png compression to make the upload swifter.

Im on my phone, which i said in my OP post. 3G is significantly faster for me than my wifi.

Why is your connection so slow, then?
>>
>>52561808
Connection on my phone is fine, im just posting from work. At home the wifi is godawful, as i have said. I dont know if its because i live in a nature reserve in the middle of nowhere, in yorkshire which has shite internet speeds in rural areas to begin with, or whether my brother is fucking with my access to it (hes a fucker with that sorta thing).
>>
On dialup speeds it's about 15 mins per set of titties for loading time. Run the titty test on your connection and use simple math to find the difference
>>
>>52558195
>My download speed is 0.05mb/s (bits, not bytes), how bad is this compared to dial up?

It's about 10 times faster than dial up I think.

I get about half of that in Australia OP and I'm pay $200 a month for it.

(not joking)

I swear it didnt use to be this bad though. It took 3 years to get phones TV and internet after we moved here 9 years ago, but the speed was decent then.
>>
I have a related question.

Given modern compression and technology, how fast could be make dial up today ?
>>
>>52562524
So what kind of connection do you have at that place? ADSL, Cable, or Satellite?
>>
>>52563405
Cable, I think. Lots of copper wire apparently.
>>
>>52558934

my fellow countryman, i know what you are talking about
>>
>>52558462
I remember the dial up internet days... we had 32K speeds in town but my friend who lived out in the country only had 18K speeds (due to the telephone infrastructure or something).

We'd play Command and Conquer: Red Alert over a Null Modem connection (directly dial each other's computer modem, computer to computer via phone line, not connected to the internet) and the game would run so fucking slow because of his shit country phone lines' data transfer rates throttling the game.

Ahh, those were the days man, good times. I'd queue up like 15 porn images to download and wait 15 - 20 mins for them to load so I could fap, haha.
>>
>bits not bytes
What are you, retarded?
>>
>>52564612
Lots of copper wire might mean ADSL
>>
>>52558195
You don't know the speed of dial up
RREEEEEEE
babby's get out
>>
>>52565860
Fun story; I grew up in the 90's and lived through dial up, but due to some weird ass hypnotherapy when I was 15, I barely remember anything since before that time.

>>52565686
Yeah, that was also a thought, but a friend more knowledgeable than I was insistent it was cable. All I know is that the internet was ready about the same time as the phone and TV was, so whatever it is, they all use the same source maybe? They had to put an actual line down 15 miles just for our house.
>>
Use the latest dev build of ublock origin to block all media elements larger than a given size.
>>
>>52558195
have you ever tried using internet when you get throttled to 32 kbit/s after the monthly cap expires? that's how slow dial-up feels.
>>
>>52566571
>but due to some weird ass hypnotherapy when I was 15, I barely remember anything since before that time.

What.... I think that deserves a story!
>>
>>52558195
dial up is 56 kbit = 0.056 Mb

you dont have 0.05 Mb but 0.05 MB (bytes, not bits)
>>
>>52558422
Dialup is 64kbs a second dimwit.
>>
>>52565167
Right. So you had ISDN, which isn't dialup... And you somehow magically used nullmodem which is point to point between two PCs, over your PSTN circuits without dialing each other.
>>
>>52566916
ur dumb son :^)
>>
>>52566868
Erm, about what to do with it specifically? I can barely remember anything before then. I remember I ended up having the therapy due to being legitimately autistic, which prevented me from having social life (which the therapy actually helped a lot with, mainly a confidence thing), and it was also about forgetting a lot of the crap that it had caused me to feel during childhood (plus the few years of depression between ages 10-14), along with the years of medication, and the sexual abuse I got from the only person who claimed to be my friend at the time.

I remember the reasons, and I remember that the abuse and depression happened, but I can't actually remember it unless I'm drunk or something.

t-mobile edge network
mmmm
most apps/pages just timeout.
i have the wal-mart/tmobile plan. great speeds in the city. step a foot out and it goes straight to edge. luckily they upgraded their shit so i dont have that problem anymore.
>>
>>52562664
xz has the best size ratio of a compression algorithm and it's only about 25% smaller than the upper levels of gzip at the cost of being about 10 times slower.
>>
>>52566916
Dialup is 64kbps which is around in real world performance 5KB/s.
Retard.
>>
>>52565167
No, it was dialup. And yes, the Null Modem connection dialed directly from the modem on one PC to the modem on the other PC using their phone number that you entered in an in-game menu.
>>
>>52567567

>>52566926
>>
>>52567567
Null modem is crossed over rs232, no modems required, youre only talking about modem play. Two different but related techs.
>>
>>52567746
It said "Null Modem" in the game, I was like 11 years old then and have no idea what it was actually doing behind the scenes.
>>
>>52567762
Looking into it I suppose it was more likely a virtual null modem connection of the two computers/programs facilitated via a modem to modem connection.
>>
>>52567808
Nullmodem connections did give me great times with Age of Empires, Total Annihilation and Shogo.
